Aravinda de Silva announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, after rains and a determined Australian team washed out Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the World Cup finals. Australia, despite being restricted to 212 for seven, won the rain-affected match by 48 runs.

De Silva, who had already announced his Test retirement in October, was run out due to a superb fielding by Andy Bichel for 11 in his last innings.

De Silva made his debut against England at Lord's in August 1984, who has since then made 6,361 Test runs at an average of 42.97 and 9,284 one-day runs, the third highest individual tally in one-day history.

The 37-year-old right-hander has played 93 Tests and 308 one-dayers and has taken part in five World Cups. He was awarded the man of the match for his superb century against Australia in the 1996 World Cup final when Sri Lanka lifted their first World Cup trophy.
