Ashes Cricket 2009 v1.1 Open Beta 2

What fields you using mate?

Im a little concerned the Beta 2 has made bowling to the AI easier than Beta 1... someone tell me otherwise!!

I used a 6-3 field (1 slip) and although I had a gully, point, cover, extra cover and mid off the AI really shouldn't be getting out for such a low total - esp. as only 2 wickets were catches to Colly at cover. Note that I didn't use a short cover so it's not exactly a cheat field.

thats about the most normal field in a test match after 20-30 overs. hmmm lets hope it was just one time thing with the patch

One thing I have noticed since the beta patch v1.0 came out,is that the number of 'plumb' LBW appeals that are being turned down has increased. Now in a test matches, atleast 2-3 dead-straight LBW appeals are being turned down. Is it only me or do you guys getting this also?
An example of LBW that are being turnded down:

That is not out Shan. Really close, but most umpires would prob give it not out.

This exact thing used to drive me insane on BLIC2005

Just outside off, for me.

My first feelings about bowling vs the AI in Beta 2 were that it was too easy - Freddie destroyed the Aussie middle order, although they did recover to 260, but in the series I've started now, the Aussies won the toss and have reached 170/3, after losing a couple of early wickets. Slightly too early to say just yet, but I reckon the bowling v the AI is just right!

I'm using mainly custom fields and thankfully, the AI isn't getting themselves caught out on the boundary anywhere near as much as pre beta 1; in the 'vanilla' game, putting a few men out on the ropes and bringing on a spinner usually caused a cluster of wickets, but it's much better now. They still get caught occasionally, of course; I'd love it if the AI could play more sensibly when the field is back. Also, they no longer take any quick singles off defensive shots anymore, which is a shame because this is the first cricket game where I've seen the AI do that, but maybe TG couldn't get the balance right between suicide-o-runs and the ability to take quick singles. Of course, some of them are easy singles that should be taken no problem - maybe we'll see more improvements in the final. TG have been improving the game massively - Beta 1 was a huge leap forwards and Beta 2 made progress as well.

Thing is, I'm getting too many bowled/LBWs and not enough edges...

For me, if you take Beta 1, and put it up against Beta 2, the variation of dismissals was better in Beta 1, but there were various other issues with Beta 1 such as the borked bowler stamina (much better now), the overpowered 'poor' lofted shots and the AI's habit of leaving balls they should play at and getting themselves bowled. It still happens, but nowhere near as much as it did - now, when they get bowled/LBW, they're usually playing a (sensible) shot.

Hopefully it was just to the him patching it mid way through his saved game!

There's a good chance that's the case, because the same thing happened with my saved game.

Just tested the new patch and one improvement I saw is in the fields. Another was, players in the slog overs in a T20 match.

I had similar LBW appeal against Pietersen turned down of Habhajan, denying me a very rare Hattrick in the hard difficulty.. it really made me swear at the umpire! :p

Here's an wicket that perfectly reflects the open-ended dismissals like real life cricket can happen in this game.
The ball hits the pad of Cook which then slowly trickles to touch the off-stump; batsman is played on!

Haven't really used the standard fields - are they more realistic now?

Wow, that is so realistic!

I've just finished the third test against the Aussies and won by around 70 runs. Unfortunately 3 of the Aussie batsmen were caught in the deep trying to slog it out the park, off of seamers with three fielders back (I went defensive after Ponting and Katich were scoring runs at will). Ponting was caught deep cover, Katich long on and Haddin was also deep cover. I don't have an issue so much with them going aerial (even if its somewhat unrealistic), but when they do go aerial they continue to aim as if they are placing it in the gaps along the ground.

I started a match earlier, and Oz got to 403/1, with Ponting on 120-odd, and Katich on 150-odd. Ponting then ran himself out (delayed third run problem), Katich edged to slip (off a defensive shot, yay), Clarke tried to blast his second ball through cover and was caught there and then everyone else kind-of got out, apart from Hussey who did quite well.

From 403/1 they ended up just over 500ao.

I'm a little suspicious about the middle order and how many runs they'll actually score.

Has anyone played a match with a significant contribution from the middle order?

At the moment it seems as though they give their wickets away too easily, so if you get the first 3 wickets quickly, you skittle them. Also, has anyone found a tail making themselves difficult to dismiss? At the moment they seem a little feeble. I think this could probably be sorted with some stats editing though.
