The Australians, current favourites to win the Ashes 2010 in the cricket odds, have named their 17-man squad, set to be cut down by around three or four to a final number of 13 or 14 nearer the time, for the first Ashes test against England, scheduled for later this month in Brisbane.

The squad includes a shock or two that might throw a minor spanner in the works of England’s preparations for the Ashes cricket action, with Xavier Doherty perhaps the most surprising inclusion. The left-arm spinner will provide the Aussies with an additional slow bowling option to complement the services of both Nathan Hauritz and Steve Smith.

The Australians have also included a number of players whom they hope will be able to recover fully from injury problems in time to make a substantial impact in Brisbane, with Doug Bollinger, Ryan Harris (who has a chronic knee injury that needs to be monitored closely), and Simon Katich, their opening batsman who broke his finger earlier this year on the Aussies’ tour of India, only making recent returns from injury and Michael Clarke suffering over the past few days from a recurring back problem. Clarke’s back problem started causing him issues once again at the weekend in a match for New South Wales.

The batsman, who has had issues such as this one to deal with throughout his career since making his debut at the age of 18, revealed his confidence that the back problem currently hindering him won’t be an issue come the 25th of November but, that said, will miss the next round of Sheffield Shield matches due to be played this week just in case it flares up again irreparably.
