Aus 4/204
29 overs

Ponting 107
Hussey 47
Clarke 33*

After winning the toss and batting on a perfect batting wicket, Australia have battled to 4/204 at the end of the first session. Matthew Hayden was dismissed for a first ball duck after gloving a bouncer to short leg, leaving the Aussies reeling at 1/4, and when Katich fell they were 2/31 and in all sorts of trouble. Mike Hussey and Ricky Ponting then combined for a 124 run 3rd wicket stand before Hussey fell edging a short ball to keeper Khalid Mased. Ponting was then dismissed in the last over before lunch for a very important 107, mistiming a drive straight to the short cover fielder off the bowling of Mortaz, who bowled 15 straight overs in the session and collected 3 wickets. Australia have been keen to force the run rate and although they have been successful scoring at over 6 an over, it has cost them with 4 wickets in the first session. They will now look to regroup and aim for a total over 500.

Australia slumped to be bowled out by the home side for just 325 before Tea on day one, losing 6 wickets in the middle session in a terrible batting display. Haddin was caught driving in the first over of the session to have Australia struggling at 5/209, and when Watson mistimed a pull shot to square leg they were in all sorts of trouble at 6/235. However, debutant spinner Dan Cullen gave the Aussies hope with a 56 run stand between himself and Clarke, before he edged one to the keeper off the bowling of Razzik. The next ball Lee was dismissed, popping the ball up off the bat straight to the bat-pad fielder. Michael Clarke was the next one to go, bowled for 96 while trying to drive to bring up his ton. McGain did some hard hitting at the end with a cameo of 17, taking Australia to 325 for the first innings. Bangladesh got through a chanceless 9 overs before tea to go into the break at 0-21. The next session will be vital to the outcome of this match with Australia relying heavily on untried spinners' Cullen and McGain.

Bangladesh have fought to 3/128 after 37 overs at stumps on day 1 in reply to Australia's total of 325. The two openers put on a 65 run stand before debutant Dan Cullen removed Omir for 27 in his first over of test cricket, when he mistimed a pull shot to square leg. Beshir then arrived at the crease and looked pretty comfortable, combining with Sakir for a 30 run stand, before Cullen struck once again with Sakir edging onto his pad and up to silly point. This had Bangladesh on the back foot and when Beshir was run out 12 runs later, Australia had them 3/107 and in trouble. They managed to bat the remaining overs to stumps, still 197 runs behind Australia. I would say that the Aussies are just on top, considering Bangladesh's lack of batting depth. Having said that, this match is a close one!!!

Michael Clarke pulled out a terrific performance with the ball to clean up the Bangladesh tail, picking up 7/9 off 6.5 overs in an outstanding display. Bangladesh were cruising at 3/174 before Clarke struck twice in 2 balls to have them reeling at 5/174. After this no one was able to get going and Clarke cleaned the tail up single-handedly to bowl them out for 198, with Razin Saleb making 55. Australia had to face 3 overs and are 0/17 in reply, with the match seemingly in the bag as they lead by 144.

people always give clarke for "cleaning up the tail" but they are the only wickets he ever takes...

anyway, didn't i tell you =P? dan cullen going to toe-to-toe with clarke- a batsman by trade, unlike dan- and more importantly, taking the breakthru wicket...
