Australia's spinning dilemma

Couldn't find a thread specified just for this and I wanted to put this good quote from Robertson somewhere.

"The selectors expect spinners to know their craft straight away and I think we've totally forgotten what Shane Warne's first 18 months were like. We live in a fantasy land," argued Robertson.

"I would be looking for three things: someone who has got reasonable, safe technique, someone who can spin the ball and someone who's got heart."

Finally someone has hit the nail on the head. His last sentence is what the selectors need to do. I don't know which of our spinners has heart but whichever one does should have brought over to India to get some experience. Yes he might have got smashed but he would have learnt a great deal more.

Oh well too late for that, but I hope the selectors do stick with one of our spinners and let him develop through playing test matches. Of the lot so far Holland gives me that vibe that hes got a lot of heart.

I know exactly how you Aussies feel, afterall we had Phil "The Cat" Tufnell and have struggled ever since!!!!!

I agree with you Dan. Beau Casson wasn't very good in his 1 Test Match vs West Indies earlier this year.

That's the point being made though. Yeah they'll get hit around in their first test. But the experience they gain can only help to improve them for later matches

Beau Casson should be given a chance. He was sound on his debut against India. He's got a good action and he turns it.

You can tell with White there's not much potential. Australia don't need to find a bowler like Shane Warne.

Australia need to find a guy to persevere with. But the player has to have talent. I think the best spinners are the ones who are un-conventional. The Murilis and Mendises and Vettori (left arm, change pace and angle) and of course Shane Warne with all his variations.

I believe the most important thing with spinners is they have to bowl tight. Spin bowling is all about accuracy and tieing the batsman down. Spinners (like White) who bowl 1 bad ball an over will never be able to apply pressure.

The first thing Australia should look for in a spinner is that he is a full-time spinner. There is no utility in picking a batsman who can spin the ball a bit in the Test match side. If you look at some of the most successful spinners in the world, they are specialist spinners. Warnie is obviously an exception since he can handle the bat--I'm not sure if he started out like that, though.

Casson ????? noway .... He would have receive the same treatment as Krejza

Nor did Vettori or Kumble. Lots of spinners tend to develop into decent batsmen. Panesar is an obvious exception.

I agree with that point. White you feel was selected half for batting half for bowling. Neither suit seems strong enough for a place by it'self and even with both you wonder if he's really good enough at test level.

Definitely didn't start of like that, had potential but was always a bowler first. He was up there with McGrath and Walsh for the most ducks.

Some people seem to have missed the point, yes Casson might have been smashed but if he had the heart then he would keep bowling his normal game thinking of ways to out smart the batsmen. I've seen Kumble get smacked around in Australia and end up with a 5 wicket haul. It's all about sticking to your gameplan which is what any good bowler has.

The problem for the Aussies is whether you want to pick McGain, who of course is 36 and won't last forever, or go for a Casson or a Krejza who have potential but have not shown it in domestic cricket.
