Story Bangladesh: From Minnows to Tigers! (End of England tour)

Someone to do graphical scorecards - I'll send you the card and you do it up nicely for me. I don't have Photoshop.
If not having PS is the problem, I'd suggest you to download Gimp. A free alternative of PS. You can then do the scorecards from the PSDs which I'll send you.

Dragon Fire, anything will be much appreciated and it would help the story out immensely.

User2010, I'll download Gimp and mess around with it sometime in June after my exams.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions and advice.

Yeah, but it was against Zimbabwe. And Shuvo just took 10 wickets in a test match against South Africa to have an easy win and he does that so often.

Shuvo is one for the future. At the moment in my game he's not brilliant yet. But he is consistent, so he'll get selection at some time. Don't worry. I intend to continue this story for a while so you should see him selected before long.

At the moment in my game he's not brilliant yet

Meh, he was also brilliant for me and has always been my best bowler. My bowling lineup has been altered with massively but over the last couple of seasons, I've started to become more consistent with Dolar Mahmud, Talha Jubair, Mahbubul Alam, Suhrawadi Shuvo and Enamul Haque as I just leave the out of form pace bowler out. My batting's always been pretty consistent, although my #5 batsman (since I play Al Hasan at 6 normally) has been left open as I play Iqbal, my regen batsman (Isar), Hom, my other regen batsman (Naz) and then normally one of Nazimuddin, Raqibul Hasan, Mahmudullah, Reza and then Al Hasan at 6 and Rahim at 7. Still yet to get a good regen keeper.

----------

And Mohammad Sharif is another backup bowler who normally averages around 35 in both formats although he averaged 45 and 55 in Tests and ODIs respectively last year so he hasn't played at all for me this season.

If you are looking for resources then this thread should be useful. Basically, a little bit of graphics can do wonder to this story. Your writing in already brilliant as I mentioned before, just to improve the presentation, you can use a bit of graphics. :)

I'll just finish off the Zimbabwe series this week. My exams start on May 9th and they end on June 2nd, so the next series will have to start after then. All the big changes are going to come for that. New look, new style, new presentation, but the same detailed match reports.

Pitch report and weather forecast ?3rd ODI

Today?s pitch will give the bowlers a little help more than the batsmen. It won?t be easy for whoever bats second on this one, but if their concentration is good then they can hang in there and score big.

The clouds have rolled away and there will be little chance of rain but it won?t exactly be very sunny either.

Squads

Zimbabwe
Hamilton Masakadza (Bat)
Vusi Sibanda (Bat)
Forster Mutizwa (Bat)
S Rutherford (All)
Tatenda Taibu (WK)
Elton Chigumbura (CAPT ? All)
M Koortzen (Bat)
J Cullinan (Bat)
Timycen Maruma (Bowl)
Admire Manyumwa (Bowl)
Natsai Mushangwe (Bowl)

Zimbabwe?s batting was horrendous in the last game but they have decided to stay with the same team. If they can get things right today then it should be interesting to see what they are capable of.

Watch out for

Forster Mutizwa ? This sounds repetitive but right now he is Zimbabwe?s best batsman and a lot will depend on him today.

Elton Chigumbura ? His 2-20 in the last game was the best bowling performance from a Zimbabwe bowler and if he can maintain that form then it could be good to see.

Bangladesh
Tamim Iqbal (Bat)
Shahriar Nafees (Bat)
Mohammed Mahmadullah (All)
Shuvagoto Hom (Bat)
Shakib Al Hasan (CAPT ? All)
Saghir Hossain (WK)
Shamsur Rahman (Bat)
Dolar Mahmud (Bowl)
Tareq Aziz (Bowl)
Subashis Roy (Bowl)
Mohammed Sharif (Bowl)

Bangladesh did not bat at their best in the last game but with their bowlers coming up with some amazing spells that was not necessary. They have stuck with the same squad today.

Watch out for

Tareq Aziz ? His amazing 5 wicket haul in the last game for just 9 runs showed what he is capable of and if he does something similar today then Zimbabwe have a lot of problems on their hands.

Tamim Iqbal ? He has learned to attack and defend depending on the situation and the only thing stopping him from big scores is himself. If he can get past his mental blocks then the sky is the limit.

The toss

Chigumbura tossed and Shakib called unsuccessfully. After thinking for some time, he decides to bowl first. He is asked about that decision and he replies by saying that he wants to show that Zimbabwe had a poor game last time and that did not reflect their ability as a team.

Shakib does not care too much about batting first. He says that he would have batted first anyway, thinking that this pitch is going to get better for bowling later on. He hopes that his team can put up a good score and then come out to defend it successfully.

Play ? 3rd ODI

The bowlers were good early on and the Bangladeshi openers were cautious in their start. They took their time and it was not until the 6th over that the first boundary came off of the bat of Nafees. After that the boundaries started coming a bit easier and Tamim got himself into things too.

Everything looked good until the 9th over when Masakadza bowled a quicker one to Nafees. The batsman was not expecting the faster delivery and by the time he tried to get his bat down the timber was disturbed. Nafees walked off, bowled for 18.

Still, by the end of the first Powerplay Bangladesh were 42 for 1 and they had made a decent start to their innings. Zimbabwe took their bowling Powerplay immediately and they looked to get another wicket.

That ploy worked out one over in when Tamim found himself edging to Taibu for 21. Mahmadullah got into his innings, however, and he took the bowlers for three fours before the Powerplay was over.

Chigumbura would have been disappointed with his second slip a few overs after the restrictions were done. Mahmadullah got a regulation edge that went to the man at a comfortable height but it went right in and right out of his hands. The batsmen scrambled the single as Chigumbura stood with his hands on his hips.

He would have been absolutely livid just a ball later when the very next ball was edged by Hom to the same man. They same result happened this time around too. The ball just went right through him and this prompted an immediate change in the field from the captain. The man was banished to the square leg boundary as another man took his place.

The two men decided to take full advantage of their lifelines and soon enough the fifty partnership came in good time. They seemed unstoppable for a long time but it was Chigumbura who finally got the breakthrough to bowl Mahmadullah for 35 with the score at 110.

Hom kept going but Chigumbura got inside his head when he had him playing and missing to two consecutive deliveries. His concentration was not good after that and at the start of the next over he attempted an ugly heave across the line to be LBW for 41. He had looked great except for the past five minutes or so.

It took Shakib and Saghir some time to get going but once they did they boundaries came with ease. After building a partnership of 34 Bangladesh decided to take the batting Powerplay at the start of the 37th over.

That proved to be the best choice in the end when they found the boundary with high frequency and ended up taking 36 runs from the five overs. The highlight of the Powerplay was the last over when the batsmen took 14 runs off of a hapless Maruma.

As both Shakib and Saghir entered the 40s everything seemed to be going Bangladesh?s way. It took another good ball from Chigumbura to put a dent in Bangladesh?s plans when he had Shakib LBW for 41 with the score at 203.

Rahman came out and played all the shots early on. Chigumbura was in the middle of a good spell, however, and he beat Rahman?s bat to have the ball hit the pads. He went up loudly and the umpire raised his finger. To the naked eye the decision looked weird and when the replay came up that was confirmed. The ball had hit the batsman way outside the line of the off stump and it should never have been given out.

Hossain continued and he brought up his maiden ODI fifty with a well-timed four straight down the ground. He raised his bat to the crowd and the dressing room. An excellent innings in just his second ODI.

At the other end, Aziz showed his ability with the bat to hit 5 fours in a 20-ball 26 to take Bangladesh to a competitive total after 50 overs.

End of Bangladesh innings ? 248/6(50), Hossain 55(57), Chigumbura 3-50(10)
Zimbabwe need 249 runs at 5.0 per over

Seemingly shell-shocked at the punishment their bowlers had received. Have to wait and see whether they can pull this game towards their way.

I'm seeing this thread for the first time and I'm loving it.

Amazing writing and excellent scores! This story is going absolutely fantastic. The hard work put in this can be seen. KIUGW! :clap

My desktop isn't working at the moment, and that's where I have everything. I wanted to update this today but...circumstances beyond my control. I'll keep trying with it so maybe later there will be that update.

EDIT - Fixed it. Expect the update in a few hours.

RE-EDIT: Gone again. It's a hardware issue related to my monitor, so looks like I'm going to have to invest in another one. Damn.

Got it working again, at least temporarily. Put everything on my flash drive in case my monitor decides to knock itself out again.

Bangladesh had a good score behind them but Zimbabwe were capable of batting well on their day. They started well enough, hitting the opening bowlers for boundaries regularly. Both of them took advantage of a particularly poor 2nd over from Mahmud to hit 11 runs from the first five balls. Mahmud came back well for the last ball, however, getting Masakadza out LBW for 7.

Mutizwa was aggressive right from the outset, taking 3 fours in quick time. Sharif was the one he targeted most of all but it was that same man who got his wicket a couple of overs later with a faster fuller one that swung just enough to confuse the batsman. He went for 18 from 22 balls.

Zimbabwe were in a spot of trouble and they let themselves slip further when the potentially dangerous Rutherford was run out for a duck as they attempted a single past backward point. Mahmadullah made no mistake with his pickup and throw and Saghir made no mistake in collecting and breaking the stumps.

Taibu barely lasted out in the middle as he had to walk back almost in the same motion he walked out. He hit his first ball right to Tamim at short midwicket and Zimbabwe had lost another wicket with the score still on 42.

Aziz came in to bowl with a lot of expectation behind him. Sibanda seemed to think that the best defense was a good offense and he threw his bat behind every ball and the boundaries started flowing. Chigumbura started to time the ball well also, and he hit a couple of fours to add to the partnership.

Sibanda got to a well-played fifty with a lofted drive straight down the ground as the Zimbabwe fans and dressing room applauded him. He had played an excellent innings so far but a lot more was required of him if Zimbabwe wanted to win the match.

Chigumbura gave Zimbabwe more hope with a big six down the ground but Sibanda was soon out attempting a similar shot. He did not time it as well as his batting partner and long off ran across to take a high spiraling catch to send him on his way for 53.

The spinners came into the attack and that combined with the exit of the aggressive Sibanda restricted Zimbabwe.Mahmadullah had Chigumbura LBW as he attempted to get on with the scoring and Zimbabwe were 116 for 6.

Bangladesh took their bowling Powerplay at the start of the next over, with two new batsmen in the middle.

Mahmadullah soon had another wicket, that of Cullinan for only 2. Zimbabwe were 118 for 7 and Bangladesh were 3 wickets away from a series victory.

Shakjb got the first of the 3, getting Maruma LBW for 10. Two more wickets needed for Bangladesh. Mahmadullah got the next wicket in his fifth over, and now Bangladesh could almost taste the victory coming.

Shakib pulled himself out of the attack and gave Roy another spell. That proved to be the right choice when four balls into the over he bowled a beauty that pitched on a good length and went on straight. The ball was too good for Manyumwa and all he could do was edge it to Saghir to seal the victory for Bangladesh and give them a 2-1 series victory.

End of Zimbabwe innings – 146/10(32.5), Sibanda 53(74), Mahmadullah 3-17(5)
Bangladesh win by 102 runs

Bangladesh won by 102 runs
**********************************************

At the post-match presentation, Chigumbura says that Zimbabwe tried to be positive form the start but the loss of a few early wickets prevented them from going on like they wanted to. They had won a close first match and looked to show the world what they were capable of, but Bangladesh came back to win the last two games comprehensively.

Shakib is happy about the series win. He says that Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are two closely ranked teams, and series of that sort always makes the matches close. He is happy with the way the team came back after losing the first match to win the final two, and he looks forward to the break at the end of the season before a long, tough season later on in the year.

The man of the match is Mahmadullah, for his 3 wickets and 35 runs. He says that he had a good game, and he is happy to contribute to the team. He has been working on both aspects of his game over the past few months, and he is glad to see it paying off for him.

Exams are done. Going to restart this within a few days. Tell me what you want to see. More graphics is the general trend, but what? Graphical scorecards? Player pictures? (Note: I will NOT post unrelated player pictures in a match report eg. a player hitting runs in an ODI yet the pic shows them in a Test kit.) Banners? Different fonts?

Tell me what you want and I'm going to try my best to accommodate everyone. I have up until halfway through the next season fully written up, so graphics should not be too much of a problem once you give me a few days to make them.

Again, anyone who wants to help out (and be FULLY credited as contributing to my story) is welcome to PM me. I will consider pretty much anyone regardless of talent since my weak point is obviously graphics.

I won't hide my intentions: I want to win the Story of the Month competition. After running this story for a while now, it's been made clear that graphics are pretty much the only thing stopping me from that achievement. If you help me, you will be not only mentioned as helping me, but you will be a co-author of the story (since graphics + writing = excellence). So...don't hesitate no matter if you think you suck at graphics. I guarantee you that you're better than me.

Expect the first update of the England tour within a week. May be a little more than a week if I have to do the graphics myself. But I certainly don't expect that to happen, right?

Also, if anyone needs a little help in terms of writing their story, I'll make myself available once I'm going to be mentioned as a contributor.

I'm doing all I can to get this story recognised as one of the best on PlanetCricket.

I think simple graphical scorecards, a nice banner and different font and colour would do wonders for this story. Don't need to go overboard with player photos, but I would recommend using the odd one if you find a nice photo and it fits in with the story.

Graphics will always be a problem for ICC story writers, but people have managed. IIRC Jaz had a great story called "Bangladesh Begin the Blissful Age" which was just writing and screenshots of the ingame scorecards.

But don't forget the importance of a good storyline overall. You need to keep making updates interesting. Personally as a reader I need to have a reason for reading a story. If I want to read well-written match reports, I can go to Cricinfo and read thousands of articles on matches which are real and actually matter. You need to give me a reason for wanting to read your story over others - is it going to be have a storyline with controversey? Will it show Bangladesh's rise to success in a touching, uplifting way? Will it simply be entertaining? There are more options as well, but that's how I see it. :cheers

Sorry if that sounded too patronising, I tend to get like that a bit but as a 3 time SOTM winner I think I have some sort of history to back me up.

As a 3-time SOTM winner, that's exactly the advice I think I'd need. Thanks for sharing it. I'll try to have an overarching storyline, then.

I definitely think that the things you mentioned are things I can do to take this story above and beyond. You've given me some ideas and a renewed energy to carry this story on. Thanks.

I'll work on some simple graphics today and see where it takes me.

It's great to see, that you want to improve in the graphic department of this story. Keep it simple mate, the main thing about a story is obviously the story line of the story, this story has a good storyline. Your writing is excellent no doubt, graphics do need improvement and you do know that. As JC said, graphical scorecards, a nice banner, different fonts and colour could indeed make the presentation part of this story quite good. For scorecards, you can visit this thread. For banner, you can have a look at the graphics forum and ask one of the graphic artist to make a banner for this story or if you want, you can have a go at it by yourself. As far as fonts are concern, there are quite a few to chose from, chose the one you like. Same goes with the color, you can use the color that you think looks good on the update. You can maybe use green because that goes well with this story as this story is based on Bangladesh but that is completely your choice. :)

You can also have a look at some great stories in the "Hall Of Fame" thread. To just get an idea about what kind of presentation and graphics you can have in your story. Good luck mate. :)
