I am right now studying in 10th ICSE.I want to study CSE at IIT-B and I am determined to do it(IIT-B CSE requires AIR-50:eek:)

But before that I need specific help.Mathematics is a key subject for JEE.You master basic mathematics you master Phy & Chem.I am fairly good at it(I score between 90-95 marks out of 100 on an average).I like it (But I want to love it!!:love).I am good at some areas and suck at some other areas.

Now my specific question is - at the end of 10th standard what are the topics that I have to be strong in Mathematics,so that topics of 11th and 12th standard become a wee bit easier.

Also could some Math guys(Shreyas,KI,Zorax,Tassie etc) give me some reasons why Maths is beautiful. It is because I am getting demotivated seeing all the Maths hate:( .But I want to be remain motivated!!:happy
So please help me here also

(My friends and my gf think I am being overambitious One of the reasons of my demotivation)

Any help would be appreciated in advance.

Well you need to know everything, I suggest you should join some coaching centre after 10th like FIITJEE , VMC or Resonance.:)

I live in Visakhapatnam. It is JEE coaching hub of AP.Are learning constructions any important? Not for JEE for understanding JEE level maths.

Try to solve different mathematics books like R.D. Sharma or Sreejans or R.S. Agrawall. You can try the correspondance course of Brilliant or Unified Council.

Zorax,I didn't get the point you were trying to make

The thread title and the opening post tell me that you are a bit too apprehensive about your future, Neo. You should not be loving Maths just for the sake of cracking an IIT entrance exam; you should be loving Maths because you are really interested in the subject. And if you can't get into an IIT, then that will not mean the end of the world, right? Just relax, and keep practicing Maths in your own way. The more you will you let these thoughts (IIT exams, JEE exams, coaching centres) crowd your brain, the more demotivated and confused you will get. Stop for a moment and think about it. You are damn good in Maths, and score above 90 most of the time (which is great!!). Then why will you be faced with difficulties in this subject at higher levels? Have that confidence in you.

Most of the IIT coaching centres are rubbish, and are only good at giving advertisements in TVs and newspapers. I know many a people who have done well in the IIT exams without going to a coaching school. In this context, I'll quote a part of Dr Ramakrishnan's interview, which appeared in The Telegraph some months back.

First, you must have good teachers. As a profession, teaching cannot be the last resort. Also, you have these elite higher education institutions that everybody wants to get into, and so the schools are teaching for that. People take entrance exams to get into a coaching school which prepares you for the next entrance exam. It?s ridiculous. Children have to work all day in school, then they come home, maybe have a quick snack, and they?re off until 9 pm or so in a coaching school. Where is the time to think about science?

The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | KnowHOW | ?I never went to a coaching school?

Its about time we change our "coaching centre" mentality. Isn't helping the country.

Sorry but that's a rubbish generalization. The one I went to was pretty fantastic, good faculty and study material. A few bad experiences don't say it all.

I'll ask you when you do the higher level maths because this was my EXACT case. :p

Some good experiences don't say it all either. There may be a few coaching institutions having decent study material and great atmosphere, but most of them are absolute bullshit. I myself have a first hand experience of how worse a coaching center can get, and that coaching center is one of the most advertised coaching centers of North-eastern India. And I've heard numerous students/friends say exactly the same thing about the coaching schools they used to go to.

Let's wait and see.

Well you're young. I've said it myself, preparing for entrance exams and stuff DOESN'T make sense before class 11'th. Of course these coaching centres feel and sound rubbish to you because they teach you stuff you ought not to be taught at your age(which I agree, is a ridiculous concept, hence my advise not to start before 11'th). Things change when you're in 11'th though. I myself have done a two year program and have so many other friends of mine, and everyone's happy.

An institution is defined more by its teachers rather than its study material I feel. Big names like Narayana, Brilliant are famous because they're known to hire good and competent teachers. A good teacher goes a long way in opening up your mind (Or closing it for that matter, in some cases). Of course, if you're dragged into such things your heart will never be in it and everything seems "bullshit". Which is why, of course parents need to see where the kid's interests lie rather than their own interests.

I'm just saying that don't be opinionated about such things at such a young age. Yes, our education system's not the best (one of the worst, if you must), but its not all black and white.

I gave the Brilliant and FIITJEE Entrance test (i am in 10th) and i also got 50% tuition fee waiver in both but i am in dillema whom to choose. Atm i am just concentrating on my board and planning to join a good school near NCR maybe AMS, if lucky enough. Most important i have told my parents that i have no interest in IITJEE and they agreed.

Another reason why I asked:p.I guess I will do as many Maths as I can during my 10th standard. That looks the only way out and I am not disappointed.Anyways will knowledge of geometrical constructions will be of any use in 11th and 12th.
