Best of the 500 club

Yeah I wld go with Murali for a no. of reasons.

1. SL has never played a 4 or 5 test match series with any country. Aus play Eng for 5 tests every 2 years and also they play many 4 test series with India and west indies with the regular trophy matches eg Border Gavaskar trophy

2.SL plays alot of test cricket with minnows like BAN and ZIm and there was a huge debate awhile back as to why they dont get many tests with other nations.

So technically warne, mcgrath and walsh would've played alot of cricket with major nations as oppsed to murali but murali has only played 2 tests against ban neway.

So wat else is Murali to do than to get wickets whenever he plays against ne opposition?

Also the fact that he has undergone many trials during his carreer and still been consistent also makes him my choice.

McGrath bowls maidens in one days with field restrictions on !!!! (He bowls maidens roughly in every 2-3 matches)... and most of it ....the dosent give away runs ...thats what a captain wants .........

Warne is best spinner no doubt....
Murli's "dursa" is really treat to watch (but banned)
Walsh troubled batsman with his line like it bounced or kept low...he hit many batsman's helmets...
McGrath is very very controlled and balanced bowler

Zimbabwe used to be a very good team, better than the current WIndies team, Flowers, Streak, Blignaut, etc.

my order would be------------------>
1.)Mcgrath
2.)Murali
3.)Warne
4.)Walsh

Murali, is the only spinner to have troubled the best players of spin in the world and take wickets against India .Warne, as we all know has had an enviable record against all teams except against India . If you go by the fact that Murali plays more matches on helpful Lankan wickets than Warne , then Mcgrath , being an opening bowler plays as much cricket on the bouncy Aussie wickets which help fast bowling !
Also , Murali inspite of being called for chucking time and again has consistently picked up wickets and hence I would rate him a more dangerous spinner !

Murali has an unenviable record against Australia and a fairly lacklustre one against India.

Muralitharan's Test performances in India are arguably as bad as or worse than Warne's.
Murali's best is 5/162, Warne's is 6/125, Murali averages 48.79 from 5 matches, Warne averages 43.12 from 9 matches.

In the head to head (Aus vs SL),
In Sri Lanka, Warne averages 21.46 from 8 matches, Murali averages 25.02 from 8 matches
In Australia, Warne averages 32.41 from 5 matches, Murali averages 116 from his 2.

While it is true that fast bowlers can find some assistance from Australian pitches, they are predominantly good for batting.

In Australia, McGrath averages 21.84. Away from Australia, he averages 20.25.
In England it's 17.20,
in India, 21.30,
in New Zealand, 18.40,
in Pakistan, 31.00,
in South Africa, 23.62,
in Sri Lanka, 29.20,
in West Indies, 20.70
and in Zimbabwe, 15.00.

hard pick between Warne and McGrath they have done so much for the game. Warne probably is the best as he brought leg spin back into the spot light. McGrath followed close behind has shown what you can do with limited pace
Honestly i think mcgraths alot better simply for the fact that the best players of spin(indians) used to wipe the floor win warne. I mean, we absolutely hammered him. That usually doesnt happen with greats. But we took him to the cleaners every time. Im not saying he isnt one of the greats, but it takes off some of the shine. Mcgrath though is class through and through.. consistancy personified and id pick him ahead of warne.

Good point you make McGrath is consistent everywhere and he didn't have any special girfts like Warne does with spin and Lee with pace. He has had to work quite hard to get to where he is

Warne would probably have the best cricketing brain out of the 4. If it wasn't for his off field antics he would be captain for sure

For the most part his reputation is because he just does what he wants, rather than considering his actions, not necessarily because he mindlessly goes about his business.
