Alastair Cook's a year younger and has 8 international hundreds and 13 Fifties. He also averages 42 in test cricket and adapted his game pretty well to ODi cricket. Cooks first class average is better, he has a hundred in Australia, India and Sri Lanka and 4 at home. Butt only has 1 away hundred (albeit against Australia) and 1 at home. Cook's first class average is also stronger, and he plays in a country with a far stronger FC set-up. Butt's ODi stats are better, but only against India and Bangladesh, he's struggled against everyone else, and his average of 40 is only because of those performances. Cook's a far better player, and i'm sure that the large majority of informed members would agree.

its true
but has alastair cook saved england as much as salman butt?

salman butt has saved pakistan many times, and eveen though the majority of the runs he made are against india, india arent a bad team now are they, 2nd and 3rd in icc rankings.

and obviously to save a country u must be under pressure.

They are both openers, the job of an opener is to build a base for the middle order as well as ensuring a good start for the team. So yes, he has "saved" his team many times, I'd say, more like, did his job, and continues to do his job.

The Butt and Cook agurement could go for ever, one is a very good ODI player and the other a really good test player. Having seen alot more of Cook I can make a judgement on him. He looks very sound, really well coached technique. But over the last 6 months he has looked abit off, he doesn't look as good as he did when he started. I've only seen Butt lately in the IPL, so I can't make a judgement on him, but by the sounds of it he is batting very well.

Our Best young batsmen is easily Ross Taylor, who has made scores against Australia, and England. An 80 first game against Australia, and a 100 not long after.

NZ-Ross Taylor
India-Rohit Sharma
Pakistan-Salman Butt
Sri Lanka-Charmara Kapugedera
Australia-They don't have anyone under 25 in there squad lol.
West Indies-S.Chattergoon
South Africa-J.P Duminy
England-Alastair Cook
Bangladesh-Tamin Iqbal

Taylor and Cook have been the stand outs from this list.
Australia have quite a few under 20 guys that are in Pura cup already. Phil Hughes and Steven Smith are great talents from NSW.

Yeah I've heard about Phil Hughes, he was the guy that scored a century in the Pura Cup Final, right?

Yep thats the one, finally broke his run of 50s out with a 100 in the biggest stage for FC in Aus. Hes got 6 50s and a 100 in 7 FC matches (12 inns).
Pomersbach is another, has an appetite for scoring 100s in big matches similar to KP. Hes got 7 50s and 2 100s in 12 matches (20 inns).

So in those two you have very consistent run getters, Pomersbach could have had better stats had he not being suspended.

Being a New Zealander I'm going to vote for Ross Taylor, he has been playing really well for the last couple of months. Ever since that South African test series he has really steped up his game. Cook is also one of my favourites, but how the heck did Ryder get on there.

Most people over here would agree with you on Duminy. He's the only other batsman, besides Kallis, to have an average over 50 in SA's franchise system.

The thing with Cook vs Butt is that one is a good Test player and passable one day player, while the other is an awful Test player and very good one day player. If one were to judge purely on quality, I'd have to look at Salman Butt's high level of dismissal by catching in Test cricket. It would seem that Salman Butt tries a few too many of the off side shots early on and for this to not pay off on flatbed grounds such as Faisalabad is a really serious issue.

Duminy impressed me to when I've seen him play for SA, scores his runs with a good strike-rate. Hopefully he will be given more games in ODI cricket and maybe test cricket too. Does he have a chance to play the test's against England.

Yes he does, but because of AB and Amla's good recent form, the only batsman he could replace is Prince, who happens to be vice captain. So it will be tough for him to get a chance right now.

Butt is no where near Cook. I've seen Cook bat, and he is certainly better than Butt. For the moment that is.

National bias got the better of me but I'm surprised that not many have voted for AB De Villiers.

Yeah,Butt scores only against India and Bangla. He shouldnt be there.Try Fawad Alam instead.
