I think ive figured it out. 'Good length' is the wrong length for a stock ball. I bowled using L1+full and R1+good deliveries as my stock balls and picked up an lbw and a couple of bowleds. Also there were almost no silly lofted shots, with the AI making over 300.

Do you have to press and hold (L1 or R1) or just press and let go during the run up?

hold it down while your selecting your delivery type(inswing, outswing etc.) Then you can let go as the bowler starts running in
