"Poor overall effort," says Gilchrist

West Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has put his team's Pura Cup draw down to, "'a poor overall effort by the batsmen," after the Warriors fell just 9 runs short of victory in their first Pura Cup outing of the season. Although two centuries by Shaun Marsh, and centuries from Luke Pomersbach and Adam Voges kept the Warriors alive in their match, the other batsmen scored just 123 runs between them.

An animated Gilchrist talks to the media

"Even though Marshy, Adam and Pommers all scored centuries for us, very important centuries, I think the game would have been more winnable if there was a more all-rounded from all batsmen, especially myself," said Gilchrist. The former Australian test and ODI wicket-keeper made a start of 25 runs in his first innings, but managed just 6 the second time around, in an innings which need a player of his calibre to carry his team through. "I'm not going to name any of our other blokes who could've done better, because you all know who they are, and so do they, and we all know this match was very winnable by us, thanks to great bowling by The Goff and Ben early on, but our middle order batsmen, including myself let the team down, I feel. We will be looking at it throughout the season, but right now it's not too big a deal, as we performed really well in both our games so far this season, and have come really close to victory both times."

The Warriors take on New South Wales at the WACA in their second Ford Ranger Cup clash tomorrow, and will be hoping for a good victory.

Gilchrist delivers as WA thump NSW

Adam Gilchrist en route to 132 from 138 deliveries

He said earlier in the week that his poor form in the Pura Cup match against Tasmania helped contribute to their disappointing, winnable draw, and Adam Gilchrist has delivered what we all wanted to see: a magnificent innings which tore apart the New South Wales bowlers, helped along by Justin Langer, with whom he shared a 226-run partnership. Gilchrist took it to the bowlers from ball one, and he and fellow keeper Luke Ronchi had piled on 34 runs from the first 6 overs before Ronchi fell on 16. An interesting choice for the first two Ford Ranger Cup games, coach Brent Evans has chosen both Gilchrist and Ronchi to open for their side, with both batsmen incredibly attacking, using Gilchrist as a specialist batsman, and Ronchi as the keeper.

All hell broke loose when Justin Langer came to the crease, and the pairing piled on a 50 run partnership in just 30 deliveries, with Gilchrist's half-century coming in just 54 deliveries. The next 50 for the partners came 69 deliveries later, which also saw Langer notch up his 63-ball half-century. 54 balls later was another 50 runs for the pairing. Adam Gilchrist's century came up in just 102 deliveries, accompanied by another 52-ball 50 runs for the partnership, taking their second-wicket total to 200 from just 205 balls. Unfortunately, Gilchrist fell on 132 runs before Langer reached his 119-ball century. The innings had just five overs remaining when Shaun Marsh came to the crease, and that didn't stop him from firing, as he hit 19 runs off the 15 deliveries he faced, and Langer finished on 104 from 126.

Facing a doable target of 292 to win, the New South Wales Blues were off to a disaster start, losing both openers after just 5 overs, and the team crumbled to 3/62 from their first 10 overs. Thanks to brilliant bowling from Brad Hogg, Ben Edmonson and Sean Ervine, the Blues' runrate climbed as they lost more and more wickets, with the longest break between wickets being just 58 deliveries, as Hogg finished with 4/51 from his ten overs, Ben Edmonson finished with 3/40, and Sean Ervine gave away just 18 runs in his 7.4 overs, for one wicket. In his first game back from injury, Brett Dorey had a poor first spell, giving away 35 runs in his first five overs, before taking 1/5 in his final spell. Steve Magoffin bowled well all day, although he deserved better than his figures of 1/43.

Sean Ervine took 5 catches for the match, including a brilliant running catch from square leg, after Moises Henriques aired an attempted sweep shot to mid-wicket. Ervine had his eyes on the ball the entire way and took an excellent diving catch in the middle of the match. Daniel Smith was the only performer for the Blues, scoring 42 runs from 80 deliveries, and was unfortunate to lose his wicket on the penultimate ball of the match. Doug Bollinger was the only wicket-taker for the Blues, taking 2/63 from his ten overs.

This was a very decisive victory for the Warriors, and after just ten overs, their victory never looked in doubt. Brent Evans will be happy to celebrate his first win as coach of the Warriors, and the players won't be hesistant to join in the celebrations. Spot on, Adam Gilchrist. Spot on.

Superb win there. Gilly and Langer played really well, with Hogg and Edmondson doing a superb job. One question. Are you atuoplaying the matches?

Martin Love celebrates upon making a ton

Good all-around batting, helped by a 110-run performance from Martin Love has put the Queensland Bulls in a very strong position on day one. Love and Clinton Perren put on 77 runs for the 3rd wicket, then Love and Craig Phillipson put on 108 runs to seriously bother the West Australian bowling attack. Despite Jason Arnberger falling early, Jimmy Maher started strongly, and scored 43 runs in 49 deliveries, before losing his wicket to WA bowler Steve Magoffin. Good batting combined with poor bowling saw the runs come quickly for Queensland, as Martin Love's century came in just 132 deliveries. Although the West Australian bowlers peformed poor early, the latter part of the innings was much improved, with spinner Brad Hogg taking 3 wickets, and pace bowlers Brett Dorey and Steve Magoffin taking 2 apiece.

With the Queensland innings finished after 85 quick overs, the Warriors were sent into bat out the remaining 90 minutes left in the day. The Queensland bowlers managed to squeeze in 25 overs before the close of play, for a total of 110.1 overs in just a day's play. Despite a quick, strong start by openers Justin Langer and David Bandy, Langer fell on 33, and Bandy fell four runs later on 12. The in-form Shaun Marsh came out to bat after the wicket of Justin Langer, sparking the prospect of another innings recovery, but that was not to be, as he departed on 19, leaving the Warriors 3/78 after 23 overs. Captain Adam Voges couldn't repeat his match-saving innings from his last Pura Cup match, departing after just 2 deliveries. Brad Hogg was sent in as a nightwatchman, and his overnight tally is 11, while wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist was surprisingly sent in over Luke Pomersbach, and he sits on 4 runs.

Brad Hogg scored 109 from 194

The Retravision Warriors were 4/79. Enter nightwatchman Brad Hogg and wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. At stumps on day one, the Warriors looked in all sorts of trouble at 4/83, but day two told a different story. Whilst Hogg batted slowly, settling his confidence and securing his wicket, Adam Gilchrist did what he normal does... he erased any thought that WA were once 4 wickets down for just 83 runs and in a whole lot of trouble. By the end of day two, however, the Warriors had piled on another 355 runs, 251 of those coming in a deadly partnership, something that seems to becoming somewhat of a trend iwth this West Australian side. Hogg and Gilchrist batted like an opening pair who'd been together for a decade. Creating the perfect balancing act, if one dropped off the pace (usually Hogg), the other would make sure they scored enough runs for the both of them. If Hogg didn't manage to score a run in the previous over, Gilchrist would make sure to hit 12 in the next over. He's never usually off the pace, and today was no exception for Adam Gilchrist. With his fifties coming in 56, 65 and 71 balls, he gave the nation a masterclass in batting and how to treat opposition bowlers with absolute content. Hogg, however, scored his runs at a rate more often associated with this type of match than his partner's, and never looked in trouble. Either put it down to excellent batting, or just poor bowling, there were only two chances for wickets in the 251-run partnership, and Queensland missed them both before Doran, with the new ball, managed to take the first wicket in 343 deliveries. A 251-run partnership for the fifth wicket, scored at a rate of 4.39 runs an over successfully resurrected the West Australian innings. Luke Pomersbach and Justin Langer were the only other main contributors for the innings, scoring 46 and 33 runs respectively.

The Bulls came out to bat surrounded by an air of excitement and anticipation. Could the number two batting side in the country live up to the task? Could they accumulate 400+ runs, or at least mirror their previous effort of 325? The Bulls were off to a solid start. Brett Dorey and Ben Edmonson were being treated like the ugly cat from next door. Enter Steve Magoffin. Taking the wicket of Queensland captain Jimmy Maher with his first delivery, he prompted Queensland to bring a nightwatchman in Ashley Noffke. Five overs and 18 runs later, Brad Hogg, the saviour of the West Australian innings, took Noffke and usual number three Clinton Perren back-to-back, although didn't manage to make Martin Love's wickets tumble for a hat-trick. With 8 Pura Cup wickets to his name already, Magoffin didn't mind adding another one to his tally, taking the wicket of Jason Arnberger, the one man in the Queensland lineup who was off to a solid start. Edmonson returned to the attack, and in his second spell of four overs, took a wicket and gave away just three runs.
