Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Believe me, Juventus would win.:p

The draw for the quarterfinals:

Real Madrid v Galatasaray
Malaga v Borussia Dortmund
PSG v Barcelona
Bayern Munich v Juventus

That is so infuriating! There's a relatively easy route straight to the Semis there for Real - or for us had things gone differently.

Lost interest in this Champions League after early exist of Premier League teams. I'll supporting Barcelona, if they don't reach finals then Bayern Munich.

I won't be supporting anyone - just watching and enjoying the football.

Madrid have never ever been traditionally lucky with German teams in the Champions League.

Dortmund V/S Malaga is the match to watch though, a tactically attacking side going up against an adventurous and resilient attacking side.

Germany v Italy. I like Juve's chances here... ;)

Ye ha Germany don't beat Italy. But in a way i'm slightly disappointing Juve are playing Barca, since i was hoping we could get a final four of Barca, Madrid, Juve & Munich.

I really can't see how Bayern lose to Juventus, I know they lost to Arsenal the other day, but that really was just a one-off in my eyes.

That applies more in the International arena.

Lazio just beat Monchengladbach and Stuttgart in their Round of 32, Round of 16 clashes of the Europa League respectively. Also Italy U21's beat Germany U21's in an International friendly about a month or so back.

Yea and most intriguingly i'd say outside of both Bayern/Juve's regular star internationals such as Dante, Alaba, Martinez, Ribery, Robben, Manzukic, Liechsteiner, Asamoah, Vidal - both of these teams local first XI players represents the heart of the German & Italy national teams.

Hmm...got to be worst game Juve has played since they regained themselves as a club in the last two seasons. Certainly expected better from them, because seeing their water-tight back 3 defense being literally torn apart at will was pleasantly shocking.

A lot of people have stated at times Juve weakness could be the lack of world-class striker & i reckon at times tonight that was exposed.

Berbatov would be perfect striker for them - wayy too good for Fulham.

Alaba has been impressive all season in Munich machine of a team. Along with Jordi Alba, they the two best left-backs in the world currently.

Thought PSG were very braze to start Beckham. He didn't look out of depth, but Matudi had too much work to do in mid-field & regularly Pastore had to come in field. This left Danny Alves so free on the right it was embarrassing - Barca didn't utilize the space Alves was in well enough i thought.

Xabi Alonso was special yesterday. Goes to show how much of the final 3rd he controls from behind the half way line. Kingpin of madrid's direct football. The pass to lead up to Ozil and ronaldo's lob, and the 3rd goal to Higuain. If rumours are true and he wouldn't sign a contract with Madrid then the club would lose a big part of their midfield.

I don't think finding his replacement is easy with the current set of players in the world with a role similar to him.

Essien was admirable as a right back, much more when he was putting in those crosses. He's made Marcelo's absence less left in big games. Mou knows how to flex a player. If he returns to chelsea at the end of the season (i hope madrid sign him) he'd make a better comeback and give Obi a breather, but i hope he stays on at madrid.

Solid defensive unit they have right now, perhaps one of the toughest in europe at the moment, barring injuries. Albiol, Arbeloa, Pepe, Ramos, Varane (top form atm), Coentrao, Marcelo, Carvalho and a bunch of the reserve squad who can step up next season. I just hope madrid aren't on the verge of a downward spiral, if mourinho decides to leave, prompting an unlikely overhaul of the squad with all the exit talks being more likely now than they've ever been.

Fancy a spanish trio in the semis? unlikely with Malaga playing away and dortmund being a powerhouse at home. At least Malaga would go out of europe with a mark for the time to come with FFP slamming them out of europe left right and center.

It would be a welcome call to analyze the inefficiency of top european clubs, to see 3 spanish clubs in the semis. CL isn't about finishing at top 4 and qualifying anymore. Jaded Squads would be ousted as soon as they breath.

No chance Malaga are going to get to the semis unless Isco does his usual magic.

Dortmund and United controlled Madrid well largely because they limited the influence of Alonso in the matches they played versus them. Would love to see him at Spurs, they could do with a bit of creativity now.

Real were fairly lucky. Benzema could've been sent off and Gala had two strong penalty shouts.
