The 21st edition of the Champions League aka CL XXI will be hosted by not one, but several nations in the Americas with the Caribbean island nations that form up the West Indies in international cricket confirmed as hosts, alongside the United States and Canada who haven't hosted the tourney since the 10th edition over a decade ago. A total of 14 teams have been confirmed as participants, of which include curiously named Regina Phalange and even more importantly former CL champions Manicaland Mountaineers from the ZPL - they emerged victorious in CL X (playing as Manicaland Bulls) in what was one of the most shocking upsets in Champions League history. As a result of a large time gap between CL editions since 2021, the ZPL and African Pro40 Championship have been permitted two teams apiece for the first time with champions of their two recentmost editions getting entry. Other notable entrants are the Adelaide Crows, who finally managed to quite ruthlessly depose the popular Sydney Roosters in ELA to end their decade-long run of making opposing managers swoon over their batting might, which should also come as some relief to bowlers in this edition.
The tournament is set to be played in the same format as the 2015 Cricket World Cup, with 14 teams spread across two groups seven apiece followed by the usual knockouts. Ten different venues will be used for the competition with Group A matches being hosted in the United States (Florida, Texas, New York) and Canada (Ontario), whilst Group B will be spread across the Caribbean. The final will be played in the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados, a venue that has seen many a triumph for the West Indies in their glorious past and also played host to no fewer than three World Cup finals. Although somewhat unfortunately, there won't be a home team for the locals to properly cheer on this occasion, with Regina Phalange - a team comprising of mostly retired international players and barely a handful of Americans and Canadians coming closest. They were added rather controversially despite originating from a dice cricket T20 league at the behest of USA Cricket (USAC) and the Cricket Canada (CCA), who feared that a tournament without a proper representative local team would not be well received on North American shores after a failure from the Caribbean representatives to produce a local team to compete.
It is sincerely hoped such a situation does not arise again, but still the level of competition is expected to be high in what is expected to be a very open tournament with no one team standing out on paper, and the conditions will have bowlers licking their lips once again with the infamous Nassau County Stadium in Eisenhower Park being brought back from the rubble to terrorize batters all around.
Qualified teams & managers
So we're back for another season of the illustrious PC Champions League, my first (and maybe last?) as league manager here in what almost 10 years, lol. So right, all above mentioned managers please confirm your participation and if your squads possess more than 18 players, well just trim it down to 18 and we're good to go.
