Although admittedly the Ashes odds do not exactly make great reading at the moment for England cricket fans, they are only odds, which ultimately means that they are not set in stone. In fact, the England team are likely to see the odds change several times before the destination of the urn becomes clear, with much reliant upon their performance in the first test.

Paul Collingwood has led the chorus of calls that is currently suggesting England are a side no longer susceptible to the kind of collapse that saw them return home well beaten after a 5-0 whitewash defeat in the last Ashes cricket series to take place on Aussie soil.

Collingwood is one of a number of players and experts who believe that the loss of Australian legends such as Shane Warne means that the relatively inexperienced Australian side turning out against England this year is not nearly as invincible as its equivalent in recent years. The player?s suggestion can be supported by the fact that the Aussies struggled badly in a recent series against India, with their emerging stars failing to trouble an Indian side which eventually won the series 2-0.

However, whilst Collingwood was undoubtedly correct to point out the difficulties that the Aussies are facing at the moment, it should be mentioned that he failed to point out the weaknesses of the English, with the England team not in the best of shapes right now. Kevin Pietersen’s form is far from what he’s capable of and finger spinner Graeme Swann has failed to prove himself on Australian soil, leaving doubts hanging over their chances. Despite this, England fans are likely to be much more confident than in previous years that their side can display a far better performance this time around when facing Aussie wickets.
