Great Cricketer IMO, not the most talented, but was a character and worked hard. Had to balance playing Cricket for 7 hours in the hot sun while also managing Diabetes! Now just managing it alone, without sport, is difficult enough. But having to actually manage it while playing International Cricket? Takes guts. My hat goes off to him on a great ODI career.

Definitely a great player and New Zealand will miss him.

I'd disagree slightly, I always thought Macca looked a very talented batsman and that his end stats don't quite reflect this. He was a great player of spin and utterly destructive at times.

I always thought his size suggested he was maybe not the best trainer, but obviously to be fair to the bloke you have to factor his diabetes into that.

31 seems really young to quit to me (although I was surprised he wasn't older, seems to have been around forever), but fair play to the bloke; he's gotta do what's best for him and his family.

Very destructive player, can't think of many who don't respect (Certainly don't here bad words about him from people on here) and to do all he has despite having Diabetes (okay we don't know the severity) makes it even more incredible.

It's a bit of a shame for him in a way, because last season he re-invented himself after being out of the side. He was easily in the top 5 batsman at the ICC Twenty/20. Plus he bashed the Aussie attack to get the fastest century by a Kiwi. Defiantly a big loss for our Twenty/20 and ODI side. He was also heavilly experianced. If he had retired last year no body would really care much, but you can see that after his hard work the passed year he gets to retire on a high note.

Good on him for his contributions. Even with Diabetes he got through it all. I hope he can settle down with his family and health now happily.

A nice way to go with him going out on a high with the Twenty20 World Cup runs that he scored. Always seemed like a handy medium pacer to me. Never really got noticed as a player - did his job without notice.

Have a nice life after cricket :)

I liked the guy :(

Underatted as a bowler for me :p And the way he demolished Warne...just saw that on TV highlights thing one day. Amazing...

He looked to be hitting some good form lately sad to see him go just when he looked to be reaching his potential. Definitely a underrated batter, when I usually think of guys from NZ that could take us apart he wasn't on it until some of his inns in NZ last season. My best memory of him would be him doing his weird stance to Warne and still whacking him for a 6.

That stance was hilarious. He's hit some big sixes off the spinners over his career. The spinners have also on a lot of occasions been his downfall after he's gone to do something risky. Never a dull moment watching him really. e;s the kindof player where you can see that somethings going to give eventually.

It always bemused me how he was able to be such a big hitter with a small physique and very unconventional technique. Yet he managed it

Truly sad to see him go. I certainly feel we didn't see him make the most of his talent and that he had so much more to offer to the game.

Was a very good test cricketer and the backbone of New Zealand's middle order, unfortunate to see him go.
