Strong Norway team takes Test match
KCKA STAFF REPORTER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a remarkable run in the recently concluded Knockout Cup, the Kiribatian national cricket team was given a harsh reminder of what it means to play elite international sport. In a clash at the famous stadium in Oslo, Norway won the first ever Test match played between the two countries with disappointing ease.

Kiribati captain Fusco Wirihana won the toss and chose to bowl first, citing the strength of his opening attack (Raharui and Arono shared twelve wickets in three games in the Knockout Cup) as a contributing factor. The visitors made a strong start, reducing Norway to a tottering 191 for seven on the first evening. However, centurion Nilmer Hille found support in the form of tail-enders Ulberg and Osness, as he pushed the score up towards 300. Raharui finished with four wickets for 81 runs while Wirihana claimed three, but Wiremu Pikari failed to maintain a sustained threat.

In reply, the innings began well for Kiribati, with Tiki Henare finding some very impressive form as he breezed to 82. The same could not be said of the rest of the top six, who looked all at sea. Kiribati slumped to 173 for six, and although Wirihana played a solid rearguard to register 46, the Norway bowlers stuck to their task well to secure an adequate first-innings lead.

Tiki Henare fought well, but Ulberg was too good for the inexperienced Kiribati team.

In their second dig, Raharui and Arono dismantled the Norwegian top-order, but with fighters like Handal and Teigland at numbers six and seven, you're never quite through the Norwegian batting. They scored 58 and 57 respectively, and were particularly harsh on Wirihana - the captain went wicketless and was the most expensive second-innings bowler, which meant that he bowled only 14 overs.

All the same, Kiribati must have thought that 296 was well within reach, especially after Henare's second 82 of the match. However, both he and Kea Keeti (57) grew overconfident and were dismissed playing poor shots. That, coupled with the excellence of Svenke Ulberg against the middle-order, meant that there was no stopping Norway, who won the solitary Test by a resounding 66 runs - a result described by Wirihana as "pretty gutting."

The focus of the teams now switches to the first of two One-Day Internationals, which takes place at the high-scoring ground in Frogner.
