Cricket Heroes - testing & feedback

Not sure but I guess it did happen more than twice.

@Aditya: Cool, thanks for the feedback - I think the AI overdoes the short-pitched stuff sometimes :)

@everyone: OK, quick rundown of the new commentary system. It's not finished by any stretch. This is just the 1st revision and I need to include a few more snippet types. If you look in the commentary.bdb file, you'll see lines that look this:

BOWL,0,0,90,130,#BOWLER runs his fingers across this one
BOWL,0,1,10,20,Big #TYPE from the seamer
BOWL,1,0,75,85,#BOWLER pushes this one through slightly quicker

These lines indicate commentary phrases meant for describing the delivery. The columns mean the following:

2nd - type of bowler (0 = pace, 1 = off spinner, 2 = leg spinner)

3rd - delivery description part (there are 2 parts. The 1st describes the speed/flight of the delivery; the 2nd describe the movement)

If it's the 1st part:

4th - minimum speed
5th - maximum speed

If it's the 2nd part:

4th - minimum spin/swing/seam
5th - maximum spin/swing/seam

If you look closely at these lines, you'll see tags marked by a # sign. These tags are converted by the game into the appropriate value:

#BOWLER - the name of the bowler
#TYPE - spin/seam/swing
#DIRECTION - in/away

The following line indicates a batsman phrase:

BAT,0,4,5,Excellent timing from #BATSMAN as he plays a #SHOT

Again, the columns can be described as follows:

2nd - 0 = nothing special happened (see below for other values)
3rd - minimum speed off bat (0-5)
4th - maximum speed off bat (0-5)

Similarly, there are special tags that can be used for the phrases:

#BATSMAN - the name of the batsman
#SHOT - the name of the shot
#POSITION - the field position the ball went past

There are also 5 special cases for the batsmen:

BAT,1,0,5,#BATSMAN plays a #SHOT and the ball takes the edge
BAT,2,0,5,#BATSMAN plays a #SHOT, the ball kisses the inside edge and rolls away
BAT,3,0,5,#BATSMAN plays a #SHOT and just manages to get bat on this as it takes the bottom edge
BAT,4,0,2,#BATSMAN plays a #SHOT, the ball rears and takes the shoulder of the bat
BAT,5,0,2,#BATSMAN plays across the line and the ball finds the leading edge

The 2nd column indicates what happened when he hit the ball:

1 - outside edge
2 - inside edge
3 - bottom edge
4 - top edge
5 - leading edge

Please note, that you can add as many lines of commentary to the file as you want. The game will pick up on all of them and will choose them randomly according to the conditions.

I'll be expanding on this system to include phrases for where the ball pitches and to describe what happens when it hits the pads/body of the batsman, but this will only happen in future updates. I would like to use this system for the audio commentary as well as I think it'll prevent the commentary from becoming boring.

That was quite a ramble...let me know what you think :)

Cheers
Kurt

PS If anyone adds phrases to the commentary file please send it to me. I'd love to see what you come up with :)

there were quite a few whites that were missed by the keeper

What, do you mean wides?

Was the human batting adjusted again cause it doesn't say in the new update list? About to start playing.

And yeah, I do agree with Aditya although on byes normally which are too short and go flying over the keepers head. And I think byes and legbyes are still counted to the bowler's runs otherwise my maths was a bit off last time when the bowling added up to the total score and I had like 4 leg byes.

----------

And did you want to try and put all 3 domestic competitions into one competition (along with the 3 separate competitions though) so you have:

Australian Domestic Season
KFC T20 Big Bash
Sheffield Shield
Ryobi Cup

And for South Africa:

South African Domestic Season
SuperSport Series
Standard Bank Pro20
MTN40

@hedger: Yup, I think he meant "wides" :)

Yes, the human batting was adjusted too (they both share the same system). That's a good observation - I'll fix the byes and leg byes in the next update.

Regarding the last bit - do you want to be able to play a full season for a provincial squad?

Decided to do a Ryobi Cup but with Tasmania. The first game between NSW and QLD, I simulated and QLD just got over the line.

NSW Scorecard:

Watson b Hariss 15 (17)
Katich c Hartley b Harris 55 (58)
Khawaja c Lynn b Rimmington 31 (41)
Clarke c Reardon b Swan 56 (62)
Smith c Swan b Laughlin 12 (24)
Haddin b Hopes 12 (20)
Henriques c Hartley b Hopes 9 (12)
Hauritz c Hartley b Hopes 6 (15)
Lee not out 2 (8)
Clark not out 3 (5)

Extras: 18 (WD 11, NB 0, B 4, LB 3)
Total: 219/8 (45 overs)

Bowling:

Harris 9-0-47-2
Rimmington 9-0-33-1
Swan 7-1-33-1
Hopes 9-0-39-3
Carseldine 5-0-29-0
Laughlin 6-1-27-1

QLD Scorecard:

Broad c Haddin b Clark 30 (40)
Carseldine b Clark 34 (40)
Reardon c Haddin b Clark 46 (60)
Lynn run out (Smith) 12 (23)
Hartley c Katich b Clark 15 (24)
Simpson not out 48 (47)
Hopes b Hauritz 20 (24)
Harris not out 1 (4)

Extras: 16 (WD 12, NB 0, B 3, LB 1)
Total: 222/6 (43.4 overs)

Bowling:

Bolling 5-0-28-0
Lee 9-0-40-0
Clark 9-2-25-4
Watson 4-0-23-0
Smith 8-0-47-0
Hauritz 8.4-0-47-1

Queensland won by 4 wickets with 8 balls to spare

MOTM: James Hopes (3/39 off 9 overs and 20 off 24 balls)

Regarding the last bit - do you want to be able to play a full season for a provincial squad?

I don't know, whatever its like in South Africa.

@hedger: Cool, I'll add a season mode to the game. In Australia, are the different tournaments played one after the other? Or are the games sometimes interspersed like in SA?

Yeah, they are interspersed massively as the Ryobi Cup and Shefifield shield are played all over the season although there is a break in the January period for the T20s and no other domestic matches are played during that period. Just look at the cricinfo page or something for domestic competitions and maybe look at one of the teams fixtures and results and you'll see.

----------

Second match:

Western Australia 242/6 (Voges 54, Ronchi 40, Marsh 35, McKay 3/35, Siddle 2/42) def. Victoria 230/7 (Hussey 60, Wade 53*, White 30, Hogan 2/37, Magoffin 2/40, Dorey 2/41) by 12 runs

@hedger: I have no idea whether or not those results are accurate :P Is it simulating everything OK i.t.o. spiders, wagon wheels, delivery summaries, pitch maps, etc.? It shouldn't crash anymore when viewing these things.

Also, I'll definitely check out the cricinfo page to see how things are run. Might be a bit trickier than I first expected but I should have it ready for the 2nd update from now.

3rd Match:

New South Wales 259/5 (Watson 125, Khawaja 48, Haddin 37*, Duval 2/40, George 2/58) def. South Australia 214/9 (Christian 51, Ferguson 50, Klinger 46, Bollinger 4/43, Hauritz 3/27) by 45 runs

The results are pretty accurate but it seems the team batting second always scores around 210-230 from the 3 games so far when they have been chasing around 250 (apart from the first game) so you may want to increase players scoring rates a bit so the scores are a bit higher.

And all the stat stuff is working fine.

@hedger: Cool, that's good news - could you do me a favour and check the partnerships for the 2nd innings? It could be that I need to adjust the aggressiveness of the AI when batting 2nd. The top order partnerships could be batting too slowly or the top order batsmen could be collapsing too quickly.

My first match now:

1. Tim Paine+
2. Mark Cosgrove
3. Ed Cowan
4. George Bailey*
5. Travis Birt
6. Rhett Lockyear
7. Luke Butterworth
8. Jason Krejza
9. Brett Geeves
10. Ben Hilfenhaus
11. Xavier Doherty

Victoria:

1. Aaron Finch
2. Brad Hodge
3. Matthew Wade
4. David Hussey
5. Michael Hill
6. Andrew McDonald
7. Glenn Maxwell
8. John Hastings
9. Clint McKay
10. Dirk Nannes
11. Jon Holland

Toss:

Tasmania won the toss and elected to bat first

----------

Ok, after my next simulated game, I'll do that and tailenders score too slowly as well in the dying stages of the match. Like there will be 4 overs to go and they score 2 off 12 balls.

@hedger: Aaaah, OK - that might be it. I think the tailenders are penalised too heavily. I'll play around with the settings and see what I can come up with. Thanks again for the help :)

----------

Alright, I'm off to bed (it's just hit midnight) - I'll check back in tomorrow morning. I'll see if I can put together another mini-update for Sunday morning, so if there's anything you can see that needs to be changed, please let me know.

Ciao!

Well 14 runs off the wides/byes thing.

----------

Just finished my first innings and we are 115/3 after the 20 overs. Cosgrove is not out on 60 off 54 balls, Paine made 17 off 28 before he was bowled by McKay, Cowan was trapped in front by Hastings for 8 off 14 and Bailey was bowled by McKay for 12 off 22, and Birt is 2* off 3. 10 wides, 1 no ball, 4 byes and 1 leg bye.

----------

um, the game just stopped in the middle of my first ball.

----------

Yeah, the games tweaking up and just crashed.
