David Beckham

I have been wondering what makes Beckham so special. Surely, he is not the best of the footballers. There are a hoard of players who are way better than him. The only thing I can associate Beckham with is his trademark swing in the ball. Other than that, there is nothing I find special with Beckham's game.

Does he really deserve this status he enjoys now?
Please post here your thoughts.

  Exactly.

I think even the star status of his wife has got its own role to play as well.

It's a lot of things.

He's a good player, but he's not in the same league as most of his new team-mates (even McManaman is probably a more skillful player).

The star status of his wife certainly helps him a lot. He probably wouldn't be famous in the USA if it wasn't for her. She comes from the "manufactured" part of the music industry, which is excellent at promotion. His wife is a prime example. Despite having absoloutely no talent, she has become one of the most famous people in England. The reason behind his frequent changes in hairstyle and his outlandish (or stupid, dpending on your point of view) dress sense is entirely promotion.

Beckham is a brand now. In the UK, and some of Europe, if a company gets Beckham endorsing their product, it has the same effect that Tendulkar has if he endorses a product in India.

A lot of it also has to do with the nature of the media in England. The tabloid newspapers are obsessed with celebrity. When Beckham had his head shaved it got on the front of the newspapers. It's hardly news is it? But it all helps with the promotion of the Beckham "brand". The "Daily Mirror" newspaper even has a David Beckham correspondent!

I suppose his looks have a lot to do with it aswell.

He is extremely overpaid. He is the captain of the England football team and earns more in a week than the England cricket captain earns in a year. And the cricket captain is a much more highly pressured job.

I think it is a mistake using him as an "ambassador for football". His sportsmanship has been shown to be severely lacking in the past. He frequently argues with referees and dives occasionally.

His intelligence can be questioned. When he had his head shaved, he paid 25 pounds for the privelege. My hairdresser will do it for less than 2 pounds. :D :D

That was quite a long post wasn't it? Despite all that, I do think he's one of the best English players, but not one of the world's best.

I am a Man U fan too.Like Andrew said,I think he is one of the best english players but not in the world.I mean look at the worlds best.Figo,Zidane,Ronaldo,Raul, they're some of the best in the world. Also Beckham gets too many injuries and probably put a jinx on his former team Man U because whenever he played against the teams Arsenal and Liverpool(in the fa cup and league cup respectively),they lost.

Saying that would be like gold outclasses platinum.

Why would that be?

What do you find Owen lacking when compared to Beckham?

He can't cross accurately,he can't take free-kicks,he doesn't often pass when he has the ball near the opponent's penalty area.I'm not saying Owen's bad I just think he's missing a few things that would make him better than Beckham.

Owen is a better player than Beckham.

That's just opinions, what I said is my opinion too.

Remember, Owen is a forward unlike Beckham. Its the midfielders who get paid to cross the ball and stuff and get it to the forwards. Not that forwards need not do passing and crosses. It is the specialist job of the midfielders.

And when near the penalty, there is no way, a striker is going to pass the ball around. He will go for the kill. Only if there is no way they could score, do they pass it to some of their teammates. And, for freekicks, the strikers need to be near the goal, when a freekick is taken. Generally, freekicks are taken by midfielders.

Anyway, you cannot compare a midfielder with a striker. But, Beckham is bo where near the calibre of midfielders like Zidane. But Owen is surely in the category of forwards such as Raul and others.

Only because the're more good midfielders than forwards. :P
