Review Demo impressions thread

Folks, who have played the demo. I saw the below post in Codemasters forum posted by one of their member.

The game is superb but my big gripe is that when the computer bowls a fullish delivery and I select front foot shot it sometimes tells me that i choose the wrong footwork and the shot is played off the back foot, leading to me being given out lbw or bowled.

Have anyone experienced it?

It does happen sometime maybe once in 4 games or something. The other thing that happens is if the ball is leg stumpish and you go for a booming cover drive or try to play in off-side you get on timing bar " Wrong Direction".
But that front food shot being played on back foot is a bug and that happened to me too and I posted it even in the video. But I think that happens because you had pressed the button before the bowler runs in to deliver. I m not sure but thats what I think it is. And sometimes when the bowler bowls a slower one and you expect it to be a quicker one and play a shot early similar thing happens.

I'm a busy boy...I will do it though, let me answer these e-mails, then I'll try and sort it out!

Ok guys I have a question which is probably premature or kinda left-field - but then again thats the way i roll :P

Anyhoo, bear with me and tell me what you think of this..

<post snipped for brevity's sake>

Hope this wasnt TOO off-topic...i just saw a lot of repeated arguments going on in this tread and would like your thoughts on something a bit different.

Cheers!

I was thinking along similar lines...

My thought related mostly to bowleds and lbws...

We never see batsmen getting dismissed these ways by playing down the wrong line or misjudging the movement of the ball and seeing the ball go past the edge to take the top of offstump or go through the gate or beat the inside edge and rap the pads...

Too often in the youtube videos i've seen these dismissals look quite ridiculous (eg bowled by a yorker on off stump while the batsman attempots to play a hook/pull off the back foot or bowled behind the legs playing a cover drive to a full ball on legstump)...

Would be nice to see a late/mistimed shot result in missing the ball completely as opposed to getting an edge on it or hitting it in the wrong direction...

Just one day left. Come on codies please no delays this time like XBOX live. You wont have Microsoft to blame for the delay now.... So you better stick to your word.;)

And Kshitiz we want a Demo [cough] Ex[cough] [cough]pander;) as quickly as possible.

I guess no one read what is in white text in the last line of above post;)

I was watching this video here .

YouTube - Ashes Cricket 2009 Demo Footage Xbox 360 (pt 1/2) HD

During the last 2 overs, the batsman was constantly hitting the bowler straight down the pitch for 4's and 6's. I thought that the AI was smart enough to change field settings if they were constantly being punished in a particular area !!!.I mean, isnt that what the developers said in the first interview?
I still think its a great game though. It looks brilliant and there is this realistic feel to it. I will definitely buy it.

The player still lost two wickets in like 4 balls so it's not as if you could get away with doing it over and over again anyway.

But as people have said, this is an old build.

Our information is that it is roughly 2 weeks older than the playtest build, which makes it about 6 weeks difference between the demo and the gold version. They were working on the game fairly heavily in those last few weeks, they were doing stuff on the bowling speeds on the day of the (Aus) playtest (and it isn't as simple as just changing the number and leaving it).

Keep in mind that the people from Transmission have a hard job in what they can and can't post here and I bet they are all reading this with amusement.

That is very good news: a lot can be done in six weeks.

Most demos are pre-release code, because if they weren't, they would have to release after the game is finished, and on tight schedules that means on or after the actual release of the game.

From a business sense, most people aren't huge cricket fans and would go 'ooh shiny' at the demo and buy it.

That's true - so many people are sold on graphics alone these days.

^May be we can choose throw at the wrong end if we see the AI making a fatal mistake. I think we can save them that way and game play will not suffer because of that. Whats your say on that?

It's a compromise, albeit an annoying one. I would be amazed if the game's few major problems are not fixed by Transmissions in the first patch.

I posted elsewhere that I think that a 3 over test was a strange choice for a demo. It feeds into the whack-it-around frenzy that I thought they were trying to get away from. From a purely cricketing and gaming point-of-view a scenario from the first test would have been great. Survive 6 overs as Monty and Jim; super aggressive fields etc. Aus's target would be to take one wicket.
That said I can see why from a marketing point of view that is less accessible than just biff the ball around.

I agree - I reckon the demo is set up in 20/Twenty mode, but in whites. Look how much the AI goes aerial!

Run outs must be a priority issue, if that makes it through into the final game I'm gonna be pissed.

Agreed - they are the No.1 problem.

By the way, guys, where are Transmissions/Codies based? If it's the UK, then it's possible the PC demo could come out in the early hours of Thursday (sometime after 12 am).

MasterBlaster76 added 12 Minutes and 51 Seconds later...

Even if slogging earns you a lot of runs, it also loses you a lot of wickets in the demo (from what I've seen), so it won't be the way to go in a Test match.

I would read very little into the demo in regards to score setting and chasing, theres no 3 over option on the game so its obviously using some scaled down AI that will make the batting side alot more erratic that they would in the normal game. Ill judge the game once ive played it for a week. Bit annoying that my copy is going to be here next thursday but im not back till saturday but oh well.

Yes its out next Friday in the UK, see top of forum for dates!

Swingers added 9 Minutes and 31 Seconds later...

Oh forgot to mention that I tried a few things and learnt a neat delivery that got the AI in trouble once and even a wicket the second time "bump balls!".

A slow bouncer surprised the batsmen the two times I tried it, both times the AI miss-timed a backfoot defence shot with one falling just short of a close in cover fielder and the second being caught and bowled!!! try it you might like it:happy

Beginnin' to luv the bowling in this game, just wish special deliveries were still in it!:banana2

Excellent stuff!

By the way, that avatar makes it look like Malinga's eating the ball!!!! :D

I know he likes to give the ball a little kiss each delivery but have yet to see him chew the whole thing........yet:D

Mate, Looking at your avatar and Name, You could have chosen the name as SLINGER rather than SWINGER.

"Slinger Malinga"

BTW, When i suddenly saw your avatar pic, i thought someone blowing bubble out of bubble gum.:p

Ha, yeah that would have worked too!! but the name is for me and that came before the picture, thought it was funny tho and he is my favourite current bowler so had to use it!!!! :D:D

Anyway back on topic - I'm very excited the full game is only just over a week away!!! The demo certianly hints at a decent cricket game to play with mates and also alone, cant wait to try a full proper 20/20 game to see what its really like, see if some of those annoying little niggles have been removed or not.

:cheers
