Do you support your local team?

Then why do United fans constantly get hammered for having fans outside of Manchester and why are Hull and the likes praised for thinking its funny every time they come to Old Trafford to inform us that they support their local team.

Well you hammered me for being a united fan who doesn't live in manchester. You create your own problems.

Well that is different I am talking about people who live nowhere near the ground, never have done and then act like they are good supporters. If you don't go to games you are nowhere near as good a supporter as the bloke who pays a grand and turns up every week and actually shows support for their team and helps inspire them to win. Either support a side you can go and see or stop acting like a top red. I don't go every week. I accept it. I get called a glory hunter the first time I meet someone and half the time i cba correcting them and explaining my entire life story.

Again I stress my statement that there a lot of people who just cannot go and watch their team play. That does not mean they stop supporting them and start supporting their nearest club in terms of location. You support a club you like. You may support them if they are playing well, but there will be times, when that same club will have a rough patch, which can go on for a really long time. Whether you still back the same club at that stage is the true indication of your support.

Why do you care what random people call you. I think you know best what kind of a supporter you are, and thats what matters. You are just wasting your time and energy trying to explain to everyone your life history.

I find it funny that people at my school call my a stupid football fan for supporting Man Utd when they're the ones who just say stupid things like Beckford is amazing etc.

I don't go along with that. In general you like something because you enjoy it/rate it/admire it (or whatever) you buy music because you like the band. Is everyone who has ever purchased a record that was number 1 in the charts a twat? You watch films because you like the story or the actors, not because it was filmed near your house. You don't buy trainers that are made down the road from you. You don't drink your favourite drink because it's made in a factory near to you. Why should following a football team be any different? I think generally when you pick a team you pick one you enjoy watching, now that may happen to be one local to you and that's all very well if you live next to a top team (if you are actually going to go to live matches anyway) but most people find their favourite team by watching them on tv, especially these days. If they then stick with them what does it matter if they aren't local? You are a twat if you don't enjoy watching a lower league team but go anyway then tell everyone you like watching it because you think it makes you look cool. If you happen to like watching lower league football then fine. You are also a twat if you sit there claiming moral ground because you happen to live near a big club and another person doesn't. Why should you only be entitled to watch top flight football whereas a person in a different town is denied? If that is the case then I make a claim to stop showing all football on tv. Let the big clubs lose the cash they get from tv money and let's wait 10 years and see if you still think the same when clubs like Man Utd have gone bust.

Theres a difference between enjoying watching a team play such as Manchester United and claiming them as "your" team.

Nearly every weekend i tune into watch the Premier League and generally I'll watch United play because i think their brilliant. But never in the million years would i randomly decide I'll start being a supporter.

Take my situation for example. Australian rules football is the most popular sport over here and i support Essendon because my entire family used to live there and support them as well. Now, i enjoy watching Hawthorn play (the top team) because i love their brand of football. By what your saying it seems its okay if now start supporting Hawthorn and stick with them because i enjoy watching them. From my point of view, thats just glory hunting

Did you see it DPRA?

Anyone else bother to tune in either?

CHAMPIONS OF IRELAND!!!!!

Yep, watched the first 15 Minutes then had to go. Some decent football.

I already knew it would be a decent game as I watched the Saint Pats games a few times.

To your first point, I think you've answered it yourself. You watch Premiership football but your preference is AFL. I watch many sports also but I wouldn't call myself a supporter. I find that I have to pick someone to follow when watching any sport, if I don't care who is going to win then I may as well not watch. But If i were to get very interested in a sport I would start supporting a team. It's just a matter of how interested you are.

Your second point brings up something I neglected to mention first time around. Connections and Family Tradition. Of course if you have a connection to a team, maybe you know people who play, maybe your family has always supported them then you are more likely to follow them yourself. My father is a Liverpool supporter and he named me after 2 players. My younger brother is also a supporter. I have been a Liverpool supporter my entire life, when i started supporting them they were very successful. Is that the reason I started supporting them or was it that my dad did? Honestly I don't remember I was yery young, most probably it was because my dad did. What i will say is if you don't enjoy watching Essendon then its a bit stupid to support them no matter how strong the family tradition. If you have split loyalties then I guess its up to you to choose.

Oh BTW, when Ii say enjoy watching I don't mean watching them win, I mean watching them win/lose or draw.

Great!! Glad somebody watched it anyway, good atmosphere no???
Unbelieeable game, scored twice in the second half to win 2-1

Anyway, back to argument, my dad is a big fan of Arsenal and so was his Dad (Even when they won nothing) I used to support them a lot, but since the commercialism has just completely alienated me and so I don't bother following them anymore

I have a point about the argument, my dad was a life long Man Utd fan, went everywhere, home and away, but, when him and my mum moved to Droylsden 20 years ago, he went to watch a game at Droylsden, it was 75p to get in, he said it had a 22 man brawl and 2 red cards, and a 7 goal thriller, ever since he has been going to Droylsden, he managed to get me down to some, and I loved it so much I still go now.

Well it's never been a case of choice, my Grandad supported the old Cork Hibernians, then my Dad supported them and when they folded he started following the new Club city, then he passed it on to me, it wasn't big at the start but about 4 years ago I really got into it and havn't looked back for a second since.
