Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The MCG, Melbourne
Sunday 15th October 2006

It was always going to be tough for our boys having to bowl on this flat track and I got a good view of the action from 2nd slip (Whitey?s a bit touchy and assures me that when im captain I can field at first slip). At tea I still hadn?t been called on to have a bowl and was slightly disappointed. With Rogers, Goodwin and Marsh all racking up 50?s we still looked good to dismiss them for a total under what they expected.

Murray Goodwin is a class act and scored 59

In the rooms with the 20 minute break upon us Whitey came up to me and under his breath said ?warm up mate your on first from the southern stand end?. My debut with the ball wasn?t far away and what better place and time with the Warriors 7 down and me with the chance to clean up the tail.

West Australia Warriors 7/253

Looks great, Short Leg!

It's good your in the starting 11 for your first game.

Hope you clean up the tail and bowl out the Warriors for around 275 on a flat pitch which would put you in a good position!

The time has arrived for the 16 year old here on debt with the leather from the Southern Stand end. Slatter will take up the attack after tea on day one with the 68th over.

Slats measures out the run up for his debut spell

Before my first spell in first class cricket skipper Cameron White offerd me some final word?s of advice. ?Slats I know it?s the 68th over but that just means there?s no pressure on you. This is your chance to pick up a couple of wickets on debut. Keep it simple here mate.? Were the final words of encouragement I got before coming into bowl in front of my home crowd.

Slats first ball in first class cricket

A wicketless spell on debut is not what I had planned and after 5 overs of almost but not quite Whitey took me off and took two wickets of his own to wrap up the innings and bag 4 which was a special effort for a leg spinner on such a flat track. It might even shut me up for a week or to about his skills.

The skipper led by example with 4 for

With under an hour of play remaing it unlikely that i will be required to set foot on the hollowed turf unless there is a massive collapse. Slats is set toi bat at number 6 but can he score runs on debut for Victoria?

Well Slats, you were a bit unlucky not to claim your first domestic scalp but fate may have caused Jewelz to slip in the shower and gift this opportunity to you. You now need to take advantage of this opportunity or you could see yourself back running drinks. Good to see you in the game taking a catch to dismiss one of the openers. :D

good start mate. with the detail your putting into each over cam white might not bowl you in overly long spells. lovely thread though top stuff as usual

What a great name of the story, the greatest name sofar, keep up mate, I like it.

bit of an expensive spell there. don't worry back to basics - line and lenght - lol!

Don't worry about it mate, hope you score a fifty or hundred on debut!

You might want to put a night-watchman in. He might score a double ton like Gillespie!

Thanks alot boys, It's good to see this story getting some interest. Im mainly a batsman so the best is yet to come hopefully i can score a few on debut.

Before the start of our last hour battle on day one Whitey took us all into the rooms for a captains address.

Cameron White said:
Boys we?ve worked really hard so far and im proud of all of you. We?re on top now and we need to back it up with the bat. I have decided that we are going with the normal batting order and we won?t be using a night watchman no matter what. Let?s give it everything in these last 50 minutes.

The opening pair of Arnberger and Klinger

And with that out went Arnberger and Klinger. At stumps we were just 1 down which was a good sign leading into the second day.

A strong effort from Klinger (31) made up for the early loss of experienced campaigner Arnberger (15) although I was in good spirit as run scoring really did look easy out there. The outfield is lightning fast and the pitch uncharacteristically flat for an MCG deck. As Hodgey (2) hit an easy catch to Bandy I padded up and got ready to be the next man in.

Mossy was dirty after the run out

Mossy and Dave Hussey looked good for a short time out in the middle before Mossy suddenly pushed one to cover and ran. In a state of panic Hus neither ran nor said no and an embarrassing run up had me feeling sorry for Mossy who had worked hard for his 41 but then I quickly realised. Im In?????.

Slats In And Away At First Class Level

Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors

Walking out of the Victorian dressing rooms and onto the ground in which I have watched cricket at all these years was like a dream. Being accompanied by two security guards as we walked down the stairs and to the gate where I was offered a ?good luck Slats? by a crowd member.

The gate flung open and I was on the MCG walking out to the middle to make my first class debut with the willow. A couple of shoulder rotations as a bit of a warm up and I was ready to play some good cricket.

My partner Dave Hussey was waiting in the middle of the pitch and said to me ?Good luck Slats show them what you can do mate? i replied with a nod and walked t my crease, marked centre and looking up for my first ball. The bowler was Beau Casson which was nice because it?s always good to have the ball coming slower when you first arrive at the crease however this bloke knows how to bowl leg spin and he had fielders all around the bat.

Having successfully negotiated my first ball at this level I then started to think where I was going to score my first run. Having zero next to your name on an MCG scoreboard isn?t the best thing in the world but it didn?t last long as Casson flighted up a full ball on leg stump that allowed this 16 year old to clip it off the pad?s to the fence to see the scoreboard tick over.

Slats is away at first class level but how long will he last against the Warriors attack with the game in the balance. A wicket for West Australia here will see them well ontop but a partnership for the Bushrangers will see the match in there favour with just 20 minutes until lunch.
