Double Figures For The Rookie

Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The MCG, Melbourne
Sunday 15th October 2006

Reaching double figures for the first time is a big relief in a young cricketers career and it came reasonably easy. With ever run coming from a boundary my confidence has skyrocketed with lunch just around the corner.

Slatter drives and tickles off the pads to move on to double figures much to the delight of the home crowd

Updates will come every 10 runs, break in play or milestone.

Slats Find?s The Middle

Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The MCG, Melbourne
Sunday 15th October 2006

The umpires have removed the bails with Victoria 4 wickets down but with a partnership building between Dave Hussey and youngster Jesse Slatter.

Having hit a couple of cracking shots in the 20 minutes I had to bat I now have a genuine belief that I ca score big on this pitch. It?s the type of pitch that Richie would describe as ?once you?re in you have to make the most of it? and I plan on doing that here today.

Slatter hitting them out of the middle on his way to 20*

Surviving an LBW shout also helps to cool the nerves as it let?s me know today is my day even though I was along way forward and the ball would have obviously missed leg stump but you never know with umpires these days.

Warriors Without An Answer

Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The MCG, Melbourne
Sunday 15th October 2006

There is never a dull moment in cricket and especially with the 16 year old on debut and showing the Warriors a thing or to with the bat as he enters the 30?s. A combination of good judgment between the wickets and gap picking has layed the foundations for this partnership which has reached 50.

The youngster shows some ticker

To share a 50 run stand on debut is a good achievement for me but there is still a lot of work to be done if we are going to take first innings points. Hus has been nothing but support for me so far making sure that we are always concentrating on knocking off 10 runs at a time and slowly edging closer to the Warriors total.

Slatter and Hussey discuss tactics in their unbeaten 50 stand

Again I survived another LBW shout but the Warriors really don?t look like they have an answer for me. It looks like big runs to start off my career here.

Slatter may be a candidate for LBW

Your batting pretty agressive! Hope you get a 50 or even better 100!

Great story!

Yeah i didn't expect to be scoring this quickly but the outfield is lightning fast and the pitch is flat so it's just the way it goes.

Solid As A Rock

The young Victorian now look?s the good?s on debut and the only man that can get him out now is himself. The first hour of this session has been dominated by Slatter and Hussey who both have an eye in and really shouldn?t get out on this kind of pitch.

Slatter has all the shots today

There are a lot of concerned faces amongst the West Australians as their lead stars to slip away from them. A wicket now would be gold for the visiting side that hold high hops for this season.

Worried faces at the MCG with Victoria on top

Maiden First Class Half Century

Pura Cup - Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The MCG, Melbourne
Sunday 15th October 2006

Jesse Slatter has recorded a maiden first class half century on debut for the Bushrangers. Will this be the start of a superstar?s career? Slatter has had his good fortune in this innings with some close LBW shouts and risky play and misses but even the best players have there day. Merv Hughes is the Australian selector on duty at the MCG but will he be penciling Slatter in as a player of the future.

Slatter acknowledges the crowd upon reaching his first 50

Even after reaching such a rare milestone as a 16 year old Slatter is not about to get ahead of himself. With Victoria in such a strong position now it is going to be tough for the West Australian to get a few quick wickets and get back in the contest.

Slatter keep's his eye's on the prize at the G

A Lonely Walk

With Slats reaching his half century after Dave Hussey achieved the same milestone it was time for the Western Warriors to bring back there strike bowler Brett Dorey.

Coming into the game the only bowler I thought would give me trouble was Dorey and having bowled so many overs first up he hadn?t bowled a spell for a while so seeing him at the top of his run was defiantly daughnting as the bloke is well over 6 foot and has pace.

Brett Dorey is at the top of his run

After negotiating Dorey and breathing a sigh of relief with Edmonson on from the other end I could be accused of letting my guard down and paying the price. A steep bouncing ball off a length hit me in the gloves and then onto my stumps. What a way to be out after starting so well and with one eye on a debut century but that?s the way the game goes I guess.

Slats is dismissed for the first time but not the last

It?s a lonely walk back to the pavillion
