Man of the Match: P.J.Newport

A nerveless unbeaten 76* by youngster Nasser Hussain and some late hitting by allrounder Phil Newport saw the England XI to a 4 wicket win with just 2 balls to spare.
Hussain paced his innings superbly and he and Newport were only forced to start Hitting Out when they need 5 off the final over of the day.
At 76/4 chasing 209 the visitors appeared in trouble before Alec Stewart joined Hussain to add 75 runs for the 5th wicket and get their team back on track.
Offspinner Thomas Kentish kept the pressure on for the home side with 3-67, finishing the match with 6 wickets but it wasn't enough to prevent defeat.
The England XI will now head to Jamaica full of confidence with 1 more 4 day game before the 1st Test.
Newport was named Man of the Match after hitting the winning runs and taking 7 wickets for the match.

Pitch: 6 - A dry solid looking strip that would make an ideal bowler's graveyard except is unlikely that you could get a spade to penetrate the surface.
There is every prospect that the wicket will retain it's character throughout the match and it promises to be a long hard match for bowlers of all types.

England get a first look at conditions in Jamaica on the ground where the 1st Test will be played in their final warm up game before the start of the 6 match Test series.
Mike Atherton recovers from his shoulder strain after missing the opening 2 matches and gets a game and seamer Phil DeFreitas is also named in the XI meaning every player in the England Squad has now got at least 1 game.
With the pitch looking good for batting England will be looking for someone to make a century after not recording one so far on Tour.
Jamaica are always a strong team and feature a number of Test players, with Test fast bowlers Courtney Walsh and Patrick Patterson spearheading a quality attack.
This could go either way, but with some rain expected on the final two days and a flat pitch it could be a Draw.

Toss: England XI

The England XI won the Toss and took first use of a Good Batting Wicket but rather wasted their chance to cash in with a big score or two, most batsmen getting starts then getting themselves out to the spinners.
Nasser Hussain continued his good form with his 2nd half century of the Tour and there were late order runs to Phil DeFreitas and Eddie Hemmings but the a total of 277 seemed at least 70 short of par.
Spinners Nehemiah Perry and Robert Haynes impressed for the home side on a pitch which didn't offer them much after the England XI batsmen had played the fast bowlers quite well.

The highlight of the Jamaica first innings was an unbeaten 129* to middle order batsman Mark Neita which saw his side to a 1st innings lead of 147.
Opener Wayne Lewis 71, middle order batsman Cleveland Davidson 74, and allrounder Robert Haynes 51 also made half centuries in a good batting effort by the home side.
The England bowlers struggled on a flat pitch with Phil DeFreitas the pick of the attack with 3 wickets in his 1st game of the Tour.
With some showers interrupting play a couple of times on Day 3 we are running out of time to get a positive result and a Draw seems likely.

With showers continuing to interrupt play the England XI took some well needed batting practice before a token declaration 45 minutes before Stumps on Day 4 to let their seamers have a short workout.
Graham Gooch made 40 and there were half centuries to Mike Atherton, Wayne Larkins, and Allan Lamb in an improved batting performance by the tourists.
England's one concern heading into the Test now is a lack of centuries even though a number of players have found some decent form.
The bowling remains a worry with England unsure of their Test XI until they have a good look at the pitch the morning before the match.

In a very brief Jamaica 2nd innings England XI opening bowler Gladstone Small grabbed a wicket in his 1st over before a shower ruled out the remaining 40 minutes and ended time denying the visitors short spell with the New Ball.
It mattered little with players on both teams happy to see an end to a game which had been ruined on the final 2 days by several interruptions from rain and long since lost it's competitive edge.
England now head into the 1st Test having some decent practice on the Jamaica pitch and after 3 games with 1 win and 2 draws an unbeaten record and most of their players in some decent form.

GOOCH BOUNCED OUT OF CAPTANCY

Graham Gooch looks like he will miss what would be his first test as captain this evening after Devon Malcolm has potentially broken the captain's cheekbone in the nets at Sabina Park in preparation for the first test. Gooch was seen leaving the ground early, heading towards the local hospital.

Given the fact that Alec Stewart has been having back trouble for the last couple of days, it leaves Michael Atherton and surprise pick Wayne Larkins as the only openers available to England as their youthful squad prepare to head into the teeth of the Windies pace barrage.

It would also leave Allan Lamb to suddenly captain the side, something that Gooch seems desperate to avoid as there are rumours of Gooch looking at potential protective gear that would allow him to take the field in Jamaica.

The other news, it appears that England may go into the test with an all pace barrage, with a five-man attack of Malcolm and Phil DeFreitas supplemented by all-rounders David Capel and Chris Lewis, the later making his debut, with Phil Newport apparently set to beat out Angus Fraser for the final spot.

West Indies breaking Team News 1989/90...Home Side lose their Captain to Injury...Viv Richards to miss 1st Test with Back Strain

In form West Indies batsman and captain Viv Richards has been ruled out of the 1st Test at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica with a Back Strain blamed on bowling too much for Leeward Islands lately in preparation for the Test series.
With all time great batsman Viv looking in great touch with the bat in the 4 day Tour match for Leeward Islands to start the Tour after an unbeaten 140*, and boasting a career average in the 50s it seems a huge loss, fueling speculation of a closer than expected 1st Test.
Both teams now likely head into a vital 1st Test without their first choice Captains and both XIs with a slightly shaky look to them, perhaps luck evening out now after the freak Gooch injury in the nets.
With Richards sure to miss the game it seems the experienced Trinidad and Tobago batsman Gus Logie will slot into the Test XI at Number 6, his age and Test experience set to win him a place ahead of the younger Keith Arthurton.
Experienced opener Desmond Haynes takes over as West Indies Test captain for the 1st Test with extra pressure to score runs due to some added responsibility.

After a 4-0 Ashes drubbing by Australia England have had a post Ashes cleanout and come into this match with a fresh team.
With captain Graham Gooch hit in the face in the nets by a Devon Malcolm short ball and missing this game England might be slightly weakened.
West Indies are also without their captain Viv Richards who has a back strain, but with a world class top 3 and Dujon at 7 they have a strong batting lineup.
The pitch is expected to favour Fast bowling so West Indies have gone in with 4 Fast bowlers here, England also choosing their quickest in Devon Malcolm.
It would be a massive upset for England to win this one without their captain and so soon after the Ashes debacle, but stranger things have happened.

England won the Toss and elected to let their batsmen have first use on a pitch that looked like it would help the fast bowlers.
The England openers played well, with Wayne Larkins getting stuck into Curtly Ambrose first 5 over spell before 2 wickets on the stroke of Lunch to the offspin of Carl Hooper stalled momentum.
Hooper went on to take 5 wickets as England stumbled to be all out for a disappointing 215, opener Mike Atherton impressing with his temprament in his 2nd Test top scoring with 75.
Having played the quicks quite well England would be disappointed to lose so many wickets to Hooper on a pitch that wasn't offering him much.
The England bowling attack are now under pressure to grab some early wickets when West Indies start their innings.

An excellent century to West Indies stand in captain Desmond Haynes gave his side an important lead as he scored a hard hitting 142 off 176 balls 16 fours.
Carl Hooper continued his good allround game with 60 as he added a valuable 149 for the 4th wicket with Haynes, a partnership that took West Indies into the lead midway through Day 2.
Phil DeFreitas bowled well for England and allrounder Chris Lewis impressed on debut but perhaps they missed the control of Angus Fraser with Phil Newport a tad expensive.
England begin their 2nd innings 108 runs behind and under immense pressure on a pitch that has helped the bowlers throughout.

A spineless display of batting by England saw them lose the 1st Test in Jamaica by an Innings and 3 runs after they were bundled out for 105 to lose well inside 3 days.
On debut young batsman Nasser Hussain was the only batsman to show any fight for the visitors as the West Indies quicks fired after a quiet 1st innings.
A poor performance here by England sees them go 1-0 in the series, one wonders how much the loss of their captain Graham Gooch effected them leading in to a low scoring match.
