New Zealand A v England XI - 4 day match - at Napier - 1991/2

Pitch:
78 - This looks a rather scruffy looking pitch, hard but not entirely flat and probably helping the bowlers throughout.
The bounce may be erratic and by Day 3 the spinners may find the wicket becoming responsive to their art.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 5 - Normal

Day 1 Weather: 1 - Hot and Humid (aids Swing)

Injuries: R.A.Smith - Back Trouble (miss 1 match)

New Zealand A collapsed twice to the Swing bowling of Medium pacer Derek Pringle to lose inside 3 days by an innings and 76 runs.
Pringle took 5-54 and 6-20 and for match figures of 11-74 to win the Man of the Match award.
England XI captain Alec Stewart scored his 3rd hundred in 3 games as stand in captain and firms in the race to take over when Graham Gooch leaves the team.
Chris Lewis and Jack Russell made half centuries and Devon Malcolm bowled well in a game of many positives for the tourists.

England won by an Innings and 76 runs

New Zealand v England - 3rd Test - at Wellington - 1991/2

Pitch:
43 - A nicely prepared wicket but the recent rains have greened it sufficiently to the suggest the seamers will relish the prospect bowling first on it.
Batting may be easier after Lunch on the first day but once the top surface becomes damaged the spinners may begin to find some grip and runs will be harded earned throughout the match.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 6 - Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 7 - Heavy Cloud

Injuries: R.C.Russell - Shoulder Strain (miss 1 match) - C.L.Cairns - Knee Injury (miss 1 match)

Toss: New Zealand

New Zealand won the Toss and with the pitch set to break late in the match elected to bat first on a Green wicket.
John Wright and Andrew Jones got their side off to a good start with half centuries and later Shane Thomson and Dipak Patel also reached 50 out of a total of 323.
Medium pacer Derek Pringle continued his good form from the tour match with 4-58 and Angus Fraser and Phil DeFreitas picked up 2 wickets apiece to leave the match evenly poised.

New Zealand v England - 3rd Test - at Wellington - 1991/2

England were reduced to 33/4 against the New Ball before a brilliant double century to Robin Smith took them into the lead.
Smith scored 230 as England took a first innings lead of 61 but time lost to Rain meant their 1st innings didn't end until close to Lunch on Day 4.

Man of the Match:

Series level 0-0 with 2 to play

A hard hit 74 to Graham Gooch gave England a chance of chasing down a target of 256 in 66 overs before his dismissal left the rest of the batsmen to bat out time.
A match blighted by Rain was left disappointingly Drawn to leave the series level at 0-0 with 2 to play.

New Zealand A v England XI - 4 day match - at Wellington - 1991/2

Pitch:
109 - A heavily prepared pitch with little in it for the bowlers, there is just the chance that it might begin to show signs of wear on the final day but don't count on it!
All the bowlers can be sure of is the opportunity to bowl many overs with little hope of success.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 1 - Very Good Batting Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: G.A.Gooch - Back Trouble (miss 1 match), R.A.Smith - Back Strain (miss 1 match), P.A.J.DeFreitas - Hamstring Trouble (miss 1 match)

Drawn

Man of the Match:
A.J.Stewart

New Zealand A ran up a score of 498 on the 1st 2 days of their 4 day match with an England XI and managed to enforce the follow on but in the end couldn't force victory.
The visitors were saved by stand in captain and opener Alec Stewart who scored 170 and 56* to take his team to the Draw.

Please choose an England team for the 4th Test v New Zealand at Dunedin.
A Fast Paced Pitch, your chance to play both Malcolm and Lawrence in the same game.

New Zealand v England - 4th Test - at Dunedin - 1991/2

Pitch:
68 - This strip has been prepared with the batsmen in mind and should produce plenty of runs.
Some early pace in the wicket may make the toss winning skipper's decision a difficult one.
There is some uncertainty about whether the wicket will stay true for 5 days and it is possible the bounce may be erratic on the final day.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 7A - Fast Paced Wicket (favours Fast bowling and increases run rate)

Day 1 Weather: 5 - Cloudy, chance of showers

Injuries: A.J.Stewart - Back Strain (miss 1 match) - P.C.R.Tufnell - Feeling Unwell (miss 1 match)

Ahmedabad.jpg

India A v England A - 6th Unofficial 4 day Test - at Ahmedabad - 1991/2

Pitch:
98 - An interesting wicket, multi-coloured and patchy.
The groundsman refuses to predict how long it will it last, it is likely to favour the bowlers at some stage of the match.
Most likely it will be the spinners who benefit most, perhaps as early as the 3rd day.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 3 - Normal Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: S.J.Rhodes - Twisted Ankle (miss 1 match), D.A.Reeve - Thigh Strain (miss 1 match)

Man of the Match: N.D.Hirwani

A dramatic 2nd innings collapse by England A handed the home side an easy 10 wicket victory and a 4-1 series victory.
The win was set up by legspinner Narendra Hirwani who took 5-10 in the England A 2nd innings to see them all out for 76.
Medium Fast bowlers Salil Ankola and Subroto Banerjee also bowled well for India in a match that featured 3 hundreds.
Kim Barnett played a brilliant innings on Day 1, scoring more than half England A's 1st innings total in making a wonderful 187.
Saurav Ganguly and VVS Laxman scored hundreds to give the home side a slender lead but it was Hirwani's bowling that was the difference.

Dunedin 2.jpg

Injuries: A.J.Stewart - Back Strain (miss 1 match) - P.C.R.Tufnell - Feeling Unwell (miss 1 match) - M.J.Greatbatch - Ankle Injury (miss 1 match)

A 287 run partnership for the 2nd wicket between Mike Atherton and Robin Smith seemed to set England up for a huge score before a collapse of 9 wickets for 77 runs saw them all out for 379.
Atherton and Smith posted centuries but Hussain's 3rd duck in 4 innings since making 3 tons on the trot put pressure on the middle order and they collapsed against the 2nd New Ball.

New Zealand v England - 4th Test - at Dunedin - 1991/2

5 wickets to in form Medium pacer Derek Pringle saw New Zealand stumble to a total of 184 despite a well made 90 to Andrew Jones.
Pringle took 5-47 after David Lawrence unsettled the top order by dismissing both openers with the New Ball.
England take a 1st innings lead of 195 after the New Zealand lower order just managed to avoid the follow on.

New Zealand v England - 4th Test - at Dunedin - 1991/2

England opener Mike Atherton's 2nd century of the match and keeper Jack Russell's 2nd century of the series swelled the England lead past 550 before a declaration halfway through Day 4.
With plenty of time left to take 10 wickets England appear likely to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
