The teams last training before the long flight to Western Australia will mean that team selection takes place tonight. Slats is held in high regard after impressing on debut but I have never been the greatest of one day players I guess you could say im a purist and have always been a specialist at the long form of the game.
Luckily for us the Australian squad has returned to their usual training and no West Australians have been released to play against us. The news was welcomed by our boys as facing up to the likes of Gilchrist, Hussey, Langer, and Martyn would have put us well on the back foot.
Training ran smoothly under the watchful eye of coach Greg Shipperd who also has a say at selection. Batting well in the nets has become second nature to me but as every cricketer knows it?s a whole different ball game out on the field. My bowling is what?s going to be worrying me and the rest of the team as I could be the costly bowling option and a man the Warriors might target to score runs against.
Selection was again taken over by Shippy who read out the team to all the boys at training. Nick Jewell who has usually been an important member of the one day team will miss the game due to his injury that was surprisingly worse then was first thought but the doctor assures us that he is doing everything to get him fighting fit and back amongst the runs. As a result the team looks like this:
Klinger
Moss
Hodge
Rummans
Hussey
Slatter
White
Crosthwaite
Harwood
Lewis
Wise
The plane leaves for the West on Saturday and game day is on Monday. See you at Melbourne airport.
Saturday - Flight from Melbourne To Perth
28th October 2006
1:37pm
Western Australia is a funny place. Even after a 3 hour plane trip your still miles from anywhere! Arriving at Melbourne airport was enough in itself as the female behind the desk had little idea about what she was doing and it took her half an hour just to check us all in. The boys were keen not to let some Sheila from Quantas wreck there good time onboard the 747 as immature blokes like Adam Crosthwaite start throwing the contents of there on flight lunch around the cabin. A chain reaction of blokes tipping lunch onto the team member next to them and I was no exception. When it became my turn I emptied my coke over the next victim inline?which happened to be the pilot?..The cabin crew claimed to have lost navigation equipment due to the incident but we managed to touchdown safely anyway.
Melbourne airport?.where the workers are upper class
The drama wasn?t limited to on flight as we spent a little longer then was planned at baggage collection. It turns out our female friend from Melbourne put Mick Klinger?s gear on the wrong flight. Woops! He was assured that his baggage would be returned to him once it had done its trip around Hong Kong!
Mick Klinger had the same expression about losing his gear as he does when he gets out
The driver onboard the team bus that took us from the airport in Perth to our hotel also was a tool that didn?t know how to change gears and as a result we arrived for hotel check in 2 hours late.
I have always admired coach driver intelligence
After the dramas of the day the boys were keen to do there own thing for the rest of the day before our final training on the WACAtomorrow with game day on Monday. I myself took the time to sample the local culture. Quite a few bottles of it from memory.
The WACA looks to be it?s usual flat hard and bouncy self ahead of the ING cup game that will see Victoria go head to head with West Australia. The match will be a day game starting tomorrow.
The flat and hard WACA awaits
With our final training session just a light job around focusing on brushing up on the basics ahead of the first ING cup game for the Victorians. Graeme Rummans is the back into the squad for injured Nick Jewell who is still dealing with after effects of concussion. Otherwise it?s the usual team featuring the states most promising young all rounder.
The Vics run around for the final time before game day
Shippy took us into the rooms after the session to talk tactics. He wants us to stay positive at all times throughout the match and warned us that we need to be on our toes in the field especially in the opening overs as the Warriors have a lot of batting talent in there side and can get away from us pretty quickly on a flat track. As a playing group we decided on the best ways to bowl to certain batsman as well as their strengths and weakness. Here?s what we came up with.
Before the start of the ING cup match between Victoria and Western Australia let'stake a look at the scores from the Australian domestic season and the International series between Australia and New Zealand
Australia take a 2-0 unbeatable lead in the 3 mobile test series against New Zealand with an innings win
