ING Cup ? Game 1
Victoria Bushrangers Vs Western Australia Warriors
The WACA, Perth
Monday 30th October 2006

Slatter isn?t going to be the hero at the WACA today after chipping the simplest of catches to cover. It looks like another man has been rushed by the scoreboard situation and when that happens so do mistakes. The task is now out of hand baring a miracle from the tail but the Warriors should walk out winners here.

The Victorians just haven?t been up to the standard of the Warriors today and as a result haven?t scored the amount of runs they would have liked. Despite having wickets in hand all through there innings here they didn?t capitalize and now they need a smash fest to get home.

A few quick runs from the tail pushed the score up for the Bushrangers but I the end they have fallen 30 runs short with 1 wicket in hand. A learning experience no doubt for the visitors as they now fly to Queensland for another ING Cup clash with the Bulls.

Bushranger?s Return Home

Arriving back at Melbourne airport as the losing team is not the best of feelings however being a first class team there isn?t exactly a crowd waiting for you to come home. The boys knew that we all have to pull ourselves together after a disappointing loss with our next game on Monday. Shippy told us that we had lost a game we could have won if we just played smarter cricket in those middle overs of the run chase. However hindsight is a beautiful thing and there is nothing we can do about it now except move on to our next game.

The crowd wait?s Victoria?s arrival at Melbourne Airport

Speaking of our next game, which will be up at the Gabba against the top of the table Bulls and one of the season favorites for both Pura and ING Cup. The good news is that the 3rd and final test of the series between Australia and New Zealand will be up at the Gabba and finish two days before our match so Shane Warne will available to play for us. The bad news is that Matty Hayden and Andrew Symonds will be playing for the Bulls.

Where Warney, Haydos and Roy will be waiting for the ING Cup clash

It wont be long before the Victorian?s are on a plane to the Gabba for their next match, which will be a real tester for them so early in the season. The fixture see?s the Bushrangers with a tough task but if they can overcome it they will be one of the leading teams with a chance of winning the most challenging competition in domestic cricket.

November Issues
Angus Fontane Writes

Victoria Jesse Slatter made a promising first class debut in the Bushrangers first Pura Cup game of the season scoring 55 in his first innings for the state. The 16-year-old middle order batsman and right arm fast medium bowler was discovered at an early age and since then has been taken under the Victorian wing.

Slatter?s coach all through the age groups described him as ?a mature cricketer for his age. He defiantly played smarter cricket then a lot of the other kids? What is even more surprising about the youngsters selection in the first XI is the fact that he?s never made a hundred in at any stage of his short career. ?It?s defiantly something that has played on my mind over the years but I know it?s only a matter of time before I get to three figures? said the youngster. ?My initial inclusion in the team was at the expense of Nick Jewell?s freak accident. I didn?t expert to be selected that early but I am grateful for the opportunity? Said Slatter.

With a long season of Australian first class cricket ahead of him followed by county cricket in the Australian winter there is no telling what he can achieve in the future but there are eye?s on him. Australia chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch commented on Slatter after his debut ?We?ll always have an eye on him. I think the next generation of Australian cricket is really promising and it?s good timing with the Ashes in England not far away and the world cup not long after that but he does look to have all the shot?s.? When Slatter was informed of Hilditch?s comments he replied with ?Why didn?t he comment on my bowling? which pretty much sums up the kid from Melbourne and his sense of humour. Who knows maybe one day he will don the baggy green just like his boyhood hero?s.

Preparation Ahead Of A Challenge

Thursday

The schedule says that we are training in Melbourne before the flight to Brisbane followed by a session on the Gabba before game day. As usual it?s selection Thursday and there are a few doubts about places after our loss in our first ING Cup outing.

The boys train at the Junction oval

Shippy approached me after the session with a few words to say ?Slats the selectors feel they need a bit more from you on the field. You?re in the 11 for the next match but we need some performances to back up our decision. Rummo (Graeme Rummans) and Stickers (Shane Harwood) are going to get dropped, as we simply just can?t fit them in the side. We have a very strong squad this season and if you don?t start performing to your potential you might fin out the hard way?.

I feel that the target is well and truly painted on me now and the runs and wickets need to start turning over from me. It would be a big help to me if the curator didn?t prepare such belta?s. Shippy announced a changed line-up for our next match that look?s like this:

Klinger
Moss
Jewell
Hodge
Hussey
Slatter
White
Crosthwaite
Warne
Lewis
Wise

wow this is a great read, good integration of pictures into your story, keep up the good work, hopefully you dont run out of pics!

Welcome To Brisbane

Saturday

Melbourne airport is again the scene of our departure for Queensland and the Gabba. After the unpleasantness from Melbourne to Perth last game Shippy warned us to take it easy or face fines from the club. It?s amazing how you can get people to shut up once you thearten to take money off them. I for one wasn?t keen to push Shipp?s limits so I spent the 1 and a half hour trip with the Herald Sun and a few very interesting articles.

After touchdown in Brisbane the coach took us to our hotel where we will spend the rest of the day and possibly venture out and explore the place and enjoy it?s weather. Queensland was always our family?s favourite holiday destination and I intend on enjoying it again while we?re here and hopefully the next match hold?s a few runs and wickets for me.

What Awaits At Brisbane?

Our first and final run around on the Gabba today also meant I met the greatest leg spin bowler of all time Shane Warne. Warney is an absolute champion on and off the field and I can?t wait to see him in action tomorrow.

Shippy pulled us together after training again to discuss our play of attack against the Bulls. He enforced the facts that one day cricket is about attack with the bat and keeping the runs down with the ball. He also gave mention to the fact that Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds awaited us but also warned that we can?t get carried away with the fact they are international crickets after all they are human.

Symonds and Hayden are human like the rest of us

Around The Grounds

Meanwhile the Australians wrapped up the 3 test series against New Zealand and Brett Lee brought home another man of the match award and the man of the series honour.

Before we head live to the Gabba for the ING Cup clash between Queensland and Victoria let?s see how the season has started off so far.

Great Work! Nice having all these stats. Hope you can get some runs and wickets against the Bulls

Cheers,

ING Cup ? Game 2
Queensland Bulls Vs Victorian Bushrangers
The Gabba, Brisbane
6th November 2006

Welcome to the Gabba for this day night ING Cup match between Queensland Bulls and Victoria Bushrangers. A special match of sorts as the international squad has been permitted to play for their state and a number feature in this match. It should be a beauty under clear skies today and tonight.

Pitch Report

The Gabba has been known as a good batting one-day wicket over the years and today it?s no exception. It hasn?t rained for quite a while here in Brisbane and this pitch reflects that. It is very dry and will prove good to bat on throughout the match. We have seen teams both domestic and International come to the Gabba and make batting look so easy are we going to be in for some of that today. Anything over 250 here is a good total.

Coin Toss

Cameron White ? ?We?ll have a bat first thanks mate. It?s looking a typical one day strip and as we all know it?s good to have runs on the board in this form of the game. All the boys are looking forward to a good contest against the top of the table Bulls on there soil."

Jimmy Maher ? ?We wont be holding back with the ball against these blokes. With the talent we have today we are defiantly in with a good chance at bowling the Busharngers out and letting our batting talent go to work?

Victorian Bushrangers Line-up

The big inclusion is Shane Warne and also the comeback of Nick Jewell from injury. A long batting order will work in favour with winning the toss but the big test will come in the bowling department. Many of the bowlers are unproven over time at this level and it is yet to be seen if they can stand up to this kind of batting order.

Queensland Bulls Line-up

What a strong looking outfit these blokes are with Hayden, Maher, Symonds, Hope, Watson and Kasprowicz plus others in the team and at home it?s going to be really tough all day for the visitors. All the smart money will be on the home team in this top versus bottom match.
