One of the down sides to cricket is that when your down you know it and you can?t just get out there and play you have to sit around and wait for your time to bat. Waiting with the boys in the dressing room can also be a bit of a laugh but in a tense game like this it was pretty much quiet.

There is no fun and games in the rooms today

Mick Klinger (51) and Jon Moss (68) proved how good they are as a partnership at the top of the innings amassing over 100 runs for the opening wicket before seasoned campaigner Andy Bichel trapped Mossy in front. The worst thing about a good start is that the rest of the side gets the idea that the runs come easy and play like millionaires which often get?s wickets falling. This was the case for Nick Jewell and Brad Hodge who both got caught behind trying to go aerial.

The Brad Hodge wicket meant it was finally time for me the face my demons out in the middle and strangely it was Dave Hussey I was meeting in the middle again. All my first class innings so far have been started with Hus and we are defiantly starting to get on well with one another. 4/162 after 31 overs meant I could play myself in and then go hell for leather basically in the closing overs. The thoughts of can I make runs at this level and keep my spot have been clouding my head for days and now it all comes down to now.

Slatter has his time to silence his critics

Upon Arriving at the crease I was greeted by Hus who had a short sharp message ?You know the drill get in and then start having a hit in the final overs?. And with that planted firmly in my head I took strike for the first ball.

Hitting balls in the middle early is very satisfying and with my back to the wall in this innings it couldn?t have been more rewarding to reach double figures. With 15 overs remaining in the innings the Bushrangers can afford a few risks as long as they keep a few batsman in the shed ahead of the death overs. Hussey and Slatter are looking good for the visitors turning the strike over well and picking up every last run available.

Dave Hussey was the casualty of the 36th as he was caught hooking by a ball that just got onto him quick enough to draw a top edge off Shane Watson's bowling. Seeing the ball rocket miles into the air is defiantly not a good feeling and I would imagine Hus would be filthy with himself as it came flouting down to Mitch Johnson who took an easy catch. The dismissal came as a surprise to me as I have been batting with him a lot in my short career and it is way out of character to see him get out in this kind of form and this situation.

The up side to Hus?s dismissal was the next man that came to the crease. Shane Warne has always been a hero to me as im sure he is to others. I hung of every word of the champion leg spinner although I wouldn?t tell every young cricket to take his advice of ?just smash it mate? but it work?s for him.

We are now entering the final 10 overs and it look?s like if it is to be it?s up to me at this point with not much batting to come although Whitey can hit it abit. I am feeling confident about my place in the one-day side now after reaching 20 after Shippy took me aside at training last week and told me to perform. I can now use this as a message to the selectors not to under estimate my skill's when it comes time to pick the side although Warney was keen to let me know his plan which was ?You give me strike and I?ll have a hit?.

Shane Warne was the victim of his plan to smash it no matter where it was in these final overs after trying to hit a length ball out of the park but didn?t manage to get the middle on it and found Roy Symonds on the fence. Some inspired bowling here form the Bulls will see them right on top at the change of innings if they can manage to keep there bowling on track a Yorker might not go a stray here.

Skipper Cameron White join?s his fellow teammate and wasted no time playing his strokes, as did Jesse Slatter. The youngster drove off back and front foot well picking up all the singles he can rotating the strike.

The worst thing for Victoria at this point would be to lose their leader and that?s just what happened. Slatter had an eye in and looked at making big runs but to score quickly you need to take risks and this time it didn?t work out. Hopes got the edge of Slats bat attempting to go aerial over cover and Chris Hartley who has impressed behind the stumps after the retirement of Seccombe took a classic catch diving to his right. Can the tail chip into the total and get it past a reasonable total to give the visitors the edge in this match?

Some late order hitting boosted the Bushrangers total to something worth respecting. The Bulls will need to come out firing in there innings to chase down the 270 runs required for victory but with such a strong batting line-up with names like Hayden, Maher, Symonds, Watson and Hopes plus more plus more they defiantly will be in with a shout.

Queensland Bulls require 270 runs at 5.40 an over

Playing in a day/night one dayer is a different experience as obviously light has always been a cricketer?s best friend. Unfortunately for us Jimmy Maher and Matty Hayden were waiting in the middle for us and willing to spoil our good time.

Mick Lewis and Allan Wise shared the new ball as usual although they didn?t achieve any success. As the overs rolled on Whitey tried different bowling partnerships including himself and Warney but still no luck as the opening partnership took the score along at a comfortable rate. There were no fireworks to speak about but pure batmanship made the game look easy for the Bulls. After the 19th over of no luck Whitey approached me and said ?We?re a paceman short here Slats so im bring you on. Get ready?. I had been looked at a an over filler in games gone by but now is my chance to step up and take wickets or even better a wicket.
