England in Australia

If England win the toss should Freddie choose to bat or bowl? I think bat, but it is meant to be a bouncy pitch so it could suit Harmision early.

Just bat! Just bat! Just bat! Just bat!

I'm sure that's what Nasser was thinking four years ago Wolf.

Unless it's a greentop and it looks like being cloudy all day, we bat.

About 8:00.

Yeah I agree about batting lads, lets hope Fredie calls right!

well not long to go now and im really nervous! The excitement of what might eventuate is getting to me. I have pushed all the patient files to one side and ive been reading cricket blogs for 2 hours!

Ive finalised my fantasy team, had a nervous look at the weather forecast and breathed a sigh of relief.

5-Day Forecast for Brisbane
Thursday: Scattered Clouds
Friday: Scattered Clouds
Saturday: Scattered Clouds
Sunday: Clear
Monday: Clear

now im thinking, can Strauss survive the new ball onslaught, can bell fend off the ferocious rib and hand crushers from Lee. Will McGrath continue the improving form i witnessed from the ICC champs trophy? Will Harmison get it all right when it matters and trouble the aussies with his extra lift? Will Ponting lead from the front with a big hundred? Will Peitersen take to Warney or will he be outfoxed?

all these questions will soon be answered!

i look up at the clock, 55 miutes until i head home! ....the longest 55 minutes ever!

imagine the tension in the dressing rooms.

There will be quiet chatting, no doubt peitersen will be all fired up, all bombast, but i bet the nerves are on fire inside.

England will come out with steely resolve, especially Strauss, perhaps he will be thinking he should have been the one leading out the troops. But i bet he pushes those thoughts deep into the recesses, he's here to get runs, lots of them, he must be vigilant, a rock. Cook is still pretty green, although the lads shown good technique and has an enviable average so far in his short career.

Then there is Bell, how this young frightened boy who faced the ferocity of Australia back home has grown into a man who gets across into line and looks impenetrable. 3 100s in his last 4 matches, who would have thought? Can he be the one with steely resolve to confound the aussie bowling attack.

And Collingwood..Trescothicks departure giving him another chance to show his calm stubborn resolve and sheer gritty determination to hang on to his wicket. Perhaps he will take a gully catch to dismiss Ponting while he is still trying to get his feet going.

All i know is, that the digital timer on my PC seems to have slowed, the anticipation and excitment cant match what these players are feeling, but i do feel nervous for all of them.

I want England to fight, fight like they did last time. Bring it to the aussies. Because then and only then will we see the best from the aussies on home soil.

The ashes arent all that is at stake now.

Pride, the shaping of an era under Ponting, the anticipation built up by the media and public expectation since the last ashes.

This is the first of 5 gruelling test matches, played out in the aussie heat, under the perochial gaze of the ever present aussie beer swiller. The atmosphere for these sold out games will be electric, i can already sense the powerful emotive forces that will come into play.

This is it!

This is what we've been waiting for for 15 months!

In Aussie time.

Hours of play: 10.00 - 12.00, 12.40 - 14.40, 15.00 - 17.00.

even if its a greentop, bat!

batting first gives you the best opportunity to put the opposition on the back foot.

It is 25-26C in Brisbane and the patchy cloud cover wont allow it to stay a greentop for long enough to be a deciding factor.

Bat and bat well, get in behind the ball, play ultra tight and after lunch start building a good total.

I predict that...

Flintoff will have a terrible series. Will average about 20 or less with the bat and about 35-40 with the ball.

Pietersen will also have a shocker in Australia.

Strauss will be the only real consistant shinning light in England's batting line-up and chime in with a few centuries.

The series will ruin a young cricketers career.

Justin Langer will make acouple of centuries in the series, particulary in the last Test and then he'll retire.

Stephen Harmison will have a shocker.

Someone from either squad will bag a golden pair.

James Anderson will bowl well.

One of the Tests will last less then 3 days.

Ponting will have a big cheesey grin on his face at the end of the series.

The series will be a big dissapointment & worse defending of the Ashes urn in history...

Australia will win 5-0 ;)

...It probably won't happen, but I just thought I'd have a friendly crack at the poms because the 1st Test commences. :)

haha!

i hope that, Strauss gets two centuries, Bell gets at least 3 50s and that Harmison gets it all right and then this will be the perfect test series.

I still feel that the Aussies are nigh on unstoppable this time round, but in the back of my mind, i know how much passion the Poms will bring to this.

Who wants it more?

Australia have this sewn up 5-0 on paper

but they dont play cricket with paper.

They play with the heart, the mind, some would say the soul, with pride, passion, and of course expertise.

England has been focused on the ashes for 15 months, their ODI season sums that up.

If all the gears spin together the right way this series could even surpass the last, lets hope it at least comes close!!!

herez england squad
1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Kevin Pietersen, 6 Andrew Flintoff (capt), 7 Geraint Jones (wk), 8 Ashley Giles, 9 Matthew Hoggard, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 James Anderson.

soo i guess Giles plays ahead of Panesar

Haha wfdu. Nice predictions. Will be interesting. I think Ponting having a cheesy grin is a pretty obvious one though.

I think playing Giles on a non-spinning pitch is a better option to Panesar.

England have named their XI and as expected, Ashley Giles has been preferred to Monty Panesar. "It's safety first from Fletcher, but with some reason," Andrew Miller tells us. "Remember 2002-03, when Craig White was England's No. 7. The idea of a tail that long is anathema to the coach. Giles acts as ballast, and should allow England's top six to play with greater freedom."

I don't think the batsman should be worrying about the tail, you've already got 1 allrounder in the side whose world-class?. I'll laugh if Giles makes a pair though. I heard the othernight on Ashes to Ashes that England wanted to win the series... How are they going to do that with defensive moves?
