England in Australia

With KP bowling so well you guys may as well just bowl him more as hes more effective than Giles as we just saw with the comparisons between the two bowlers. Then you could play a 4th pacemen, Monty or another batsmen if the selectors desperately need another batter.

We are now also seeing what we missed out on in the last Ashes with Hussey there now. .
I'm surprised his strikerate is so low in this innings, he should be able to score quicker than that, the way he plays suggests that he does as well, but somehow he's at about 50 S/R.

Well the English have started to bowl well when he came in, in particular the spinners who have been causing him a bit of trouble. But his career SR in test is actually only just above 50 so it's just another day for him.

He tends towards correctness in the long game, a traditional opener's mindset. Leaves a lot, puts a high price on his wicket. There's no need to blitz so long as Ponting is willing to lead forcefully. That's not to say there haven't been some cracking shots, mind you.

Which is perfect as our top 4 batsmen are basically players that are stroke makers well Hayden use to back in his time and then after him they also got stroke makers in Clarke and Gilly along with Warne and Lee.

Now I really wish we'd won the toss. Tough pitch to bowl on but easier if your batsmen have done their job.
Pretty dismal reading the scorecard atm.

I wonder how Aus would have done if England were batting first. Warne definitely looks like he would have caused some problems, McGrath and Clark would have after seeing what Freddy did, Lee don't really know.

Stumps day 1 - 3/346 Ponting and Hussey not out, expect to see some Gilly fireworks tomorrow.

Why do Australia need Watson. They don't need him when they have good enough batting and bowling as it is.

I can't believe they have Clarke, Gilchrist, Lee and Warne to come.

Aussies are dominating 100% Some great innings in there, Langer, Ponting and Hussey.

for some reason this Ashes series or first test doesnt seem to have the spark i mean since ball one it felt like England only have half a team it woul dhave been much more fun if it were Englands 2005 line-up, looks like the Aussies have really got stronger no more messing about...wish to see Gilly rip it up tommorow ;)

Well Watson would have been there as a batsmen, his batting is there abouts he does have a better FC average than Clarke so he would get in as a batsmen alone when compared to Clarke. If you were putting Jaques in that would be a different story.

Well played you Aussies, Ponting back to his best.

However, as Michael Holding said, if England had been batting, they could have made just as good a total.

good day for the aussies but i don't think we did too much wrong. well fletcher did but he's just an idiot. we lacked a bit of spark today to get something going like last year. freddie bowled well.

I really doubt our bowlers would have bowled anything like as poorly as your first three, the pitch didn't score us 350 on its own.

Hayden rarely attacks from the get go. He got a reputation for being a bully over a relatively short time, but when he plays on his merits he's a slow and arguably nervy starter. It usually takes a session or so before the shots really come out.

Watson's employment gives the selectors confidence to pick a young and raw paceman as the third bowler and all Watson has to do with the ball is bowl 10-20 overs for not too many runs. Sure, it might end in winning the match either way, but there's more to it than just the win. Everyone enjoys a fiery blast of pace.
