England in Australia

well not a very good day for ENgland...the bowlers looked really average...is this the series when ashes go back to the aussies...Probably...

Australia totally dominated the day. Very good knock by Ponting and good supporting roles by Hussey and Langer. A score of 450-500 would be on the cards I would say.

I think the fact that 10 overs had to be bowled by part timers and another 18 by the specalist spinner on the FIRST DAY shows two things. Poor bowling from the quicks and poor captaincy. Also why didn't Collingwood get a bowl before Bell? Sorry, but I think it's quite obvious who the better bowler is between them.

Sorry, but that is a poor day, no matter what you English supporters say. Oh yeah, Panesar should be playing. Too bad, he aint! Unless it's close at the end which is doubtful I don't think he would of changed the result.

Thats a bare minimum, we may as well get as many runs as we can on this pitch as it won't get any better than it is now. Then let our bowlers bowl them out twice.

Have we gone back to 2001 or something? One unlucky and slightly average day from England and everyone from England is on their backs, way to support a team.

Can I just make a point about Giles. It's not his fault that Fletcher has preferred him to Panesar. To want him to fail, or even worse to get injured is just shocking and very insulting to a guy who has always given 110% to the England cause.

Positives for the day include the fielding. There was one slip up from Hoggard on the boundary, but apart from that I though we were quite good. No catches were dropped and those taken were tricky but were made to look easy.

This test is far from over yet and I think people will do well to remember that. Big day for Australia and a couple of early wickets could turn this test into a real spectacle.

I totally agree with that. I don't rate Giles much as a spinner, but i've got nothing against him personally and it's not his fault that Fletcher picked him. As long he's playing for England, I want him to do well.

I heard it this morning and just to make sure I was right I have just been watching the highlights show on sky. Did anybody else hear the Aussie in the crowd towards the end of play?
Am I just hearing things or did other people hear this. I sincerely hope I'm not losing my mind :crying

Yep I heard it, in my half asleep state it was quite surreal, and sort of made me laugh, even though it was fairly pathetic.

Also MUFC I couldn't agree more, as I've said all along I am more than prepared to critisize the decision to play Giles, and make Freddie captain. Whilst I have gone on about the lack of merit to his selection I have also never wished the chap got injured or failed to perform. I keep saying like yourself, when the cricket starts I will back whatever XI is picked, and so should everyone else!

It goes without saying that people want Giles to do well while playing for England. People are just angry Panesar was left out and that leads to emotions coming over them and making them say silly things.

well if panesar is no.1 this game then hes basically no.1 all series so monty will only get a game when we play 2 spinners, playing gilo was very negative but he has a history at this ground, but no-one can predict how this game will go until england have batted, the aussies have a dodgey pace attack brett lee will bowl great as normal, mcgrath has slowed down and wont be as dangerous imo and the other bloke is just crap :p but i dont see warney ripping through a england batting side who are only gettting better :)

Must have been watching a different game then Wil. If there was turn for KP, then Warne will get plenty of turn, and he'll like the decent amount of bounce too so I fully expect to see him in amongst the wickets. McGrath may not be quick, but he will also be bang on the money with the new ball unlike our bowlers, and will be difficult to get away most of the time, again unlike 3 of our seamers. As for Lee, he has the raw pace, and if he gets it right will always cause problems for whoever he is up against.

McGrath pace has never been too express anyway, he may clock 137km/h but thats been his max for a while now. Clark will be averaging that pace with good bounce and seam which this wicket is made for. Lee with the new ball will be dangerous, after that shouldn't be as dangerous. Warne well this is his best ground so good luck ;)

Under an hour to go now. Any predictions?

I presume we will be batting at some point in the day and I feel if the Aussies do get 500, England will have to bat very cautiously, I think this could be good for KP, who will have to play himself in for the team. I am pretty sure Strauss will do well but it will be very interesting to see how Bell and Collingwood get on, especially Bell after what happened in 2005.

McGrath's pace is not really his big weapon anyway, his big weapon is the amount of times he hits the top of off or just over it. Am not sure which way Lee will go, will we see the Lee that got hit around the park in 2005? Or the Lee which I saw last year against South Africa?

If Australia do get to 500+ we need to play our natural game in order to succeed. There's no point in trying to be too defensive. If they get 500 and leave us a session today, then we would be better off clocking up 450 all out at the start of day 4 rather than 150-1 in my opinion.

Hey all...
havnt posted on PC in ages, good to be back

i was thrilled to see what happened yesterday, it was brilliant. england aer a shadow of their former selves, particularly harmison. that bloke looks like shell, he has no confidence whatsoever, and that showed with his first ball. it looks as if he doesnt enjoy bowling anymore.
he has just come on to bowl, interesting to see how he goes.

first ball wide to Harmison. corwd loves it.
im listenign on teh radio so i can't see, but apparantly it wasn't that wide. he also said that following seeing harmy warm up he wasn;t onfident.

OMG lol, Harmison just bowled one to first slip. this is appaling. Flintoff to mid off to support harmy. this is nuts
