Story England summer

Thanks Rahul. Have been playing on my laptop as my pc is having problems. Have had to transfer the gob, roster, sav and snd_pak files. Unfortunately my laptop does not have a very strong 3D card, but is strong enough for c2k4.

At Lunch Day 2
India 11-2
R. Dravid 8*
S. Tendulkar 1*

S. Harmison 1/4
M. Hoggard 1/7

England 335 all out
G. Jones 77*
G. Thorpe 139
A. Flintoff 45

I. Pathan 4/42
H. Singh 2/47
A. Agarkar 2/84
Z. Khan 2/87

So another lower order collapse sees England dismissed for 335 after being 297-5 at one stage. But Irfan Pathan was the man for India, picking up four wickets including that of Graham Thorpe. Thorpe scored 139 before being clean bowled by Pathan. He was soon followed by Ashley Giles, Simon Jones and Matthew Hoggard. Steve Harmison did well though to support Jones at the other end before being dismissed LBW to Ajit Agarkar.

India themselves got off to a horrid start, when Virender Sehwag was clean bowled in the very first over by Matthew Hoggard. Harmison them dismissed Parthiv Patel, thanks to a good catch at gully by Mark Butcher.

At Tea Day 2
India 85-9
I. Pathan 1*
L. Balaji 1*
S. Tendulkar 29

S. Harmison 5/19
A. Giles 2/39

Well Steve Harmison ripped through the Indian batting, bagging five wickets. Giles picked up two crucial wickets, that of Laxman and Ganguly, while Hoggard obviously had dismissed Sehwag earlier. England had done very well to get 335, because India's collapse even with all their strong batting lineup, showed how tough it was batting on this pitch. Follow on seems inevitable for the Indians now.

At Stumps Day 2
India 57-4
S. Tendulkar 27*
S. Ganguly 9*
VVS Laxman 16

S. Harmison 1/6
M. Hoggard 1/13
A. Giles 1/25

India might face the embarrasment of an innings defeat here at Edgbaston. After being bowled out for 85 in the 1st Innings, India got off to a terrible start in their 2nd innings as well, as they were made to follow on by England captain Michael Vaughan. Sehwag who was clean bowled by Hoggard in the 1st Innings, was dismissed by the same man in exactly the similar manner, but just one ball earlier, and obviously in the 2nd Innings this time. Parthiv Patel did India no good by getting himself run out. Dravid was dismissed by Steve Harmison.

ANALYSIS OF DAY 2 BY DAVID GOWER AND NASSER HUSSAIN - SKY SPORTS

David Gower: What a day it has been for England. After scoring 335 in the 1st Innings, England dismissed India for 85, and have already reduced them to 57/4 in the 2nd Innings. A total of 19 wickets have fallen on the 2nd day. What do you have to say to that Nasser?

Nasser Hussain: Well, if you are an England fan, its been a fantastic day for you. But I think we were shown the true nature of the pitch today. This is exactly what was expected of the the pitch. Low scores, ball keeping low, and extremely difficult to score runs. I think its hats off to the likes of Thorpe and Jones, who played so well despite having to play on such a diffucult wicket. But the Indians, they havent managed to handle it. Full credit to Steve Harmison and the other England bowlers for making better use of the conditions. England now have a very good chance of an innings victory here, which will more than compensate for the Lords defeat.

David Gower: Yes, its been a dreadful day for the batsman, but its been like a party for the bowlers. Irfan Pathan was the first to strike, picking up four of the five England wickets that fell today, including that of Graham Thorpe. For England, the pick of the bowlers was Steve Harmison with another five wicket haul, and another one in the 2nd Innings. Giles has done well also, and so has Matthew Hoggard. Do you see this continuing tomorrow. Or will things ease out a bit?

Nasser Hussain: Well, this is what was expected of the pitch to be honest. I dint think the test would last more three, three and a half days. England batted well in the 1st Innings, and that could well be enough for them to win this test match and in style. Yes, I do things staying pretty much the same tomorrow as well, because the pitch is going worsen as the match progresses, and make it more and more harder for the batsman. But probably the Indian batsman, will play with a lot lot more caution tomorrow. They do have two very experienced batsman in the middle, and maybe they might just take India to respectable score. But you would have to say England have almost a 100% chance of winning this game now.

David Gower: Yes, indeed, Nasser. Well, I still havent been able to digest all that has happened today. 19 wickets in one day, absolutely unbelievable. Join us tomorrow for day 3, which could well be the last day of this test match. Till then its good bye.

Good job mate. You'll want Sachin out and soon, you never know what he's capable of

INDIA TRAIL BY 77 RUNS

Despite a good partnership between Sachin Tendulkar(77) and Saurav Ganguly(65), India now face an innings defeat here at Edgbaston, and with it the chance to win a test overseas after 20 years. Tendulkar and Ganguly both looked as if they might just be able to save India, but Tendulkar was dismissed by Simon Jones, while Ashley Giles had the captain back in the dressing room. Ajit Agarkar managed just one before being foolishly run out by his partner Harbhajan Singh.

SERIES DRAWN 1-1

One of the shortest test matches in Cricket 2004 history, as Day 3 turned out to be the last day of the Edgbaston Test, when England recorded a comprehensive innings victory over the visitors. The wickets to fall in the post lunch session were that of Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Laxmi Balaji, all dismissed by Man of the Match candidate Simon Jones.

MATCH ANALYSIS BY DAVID GOWER AND NASSER HUSSAIN - SKY SPORTS

David Gower: England have registered a comprehensive victory over India here at Edgbastion. They win by an innings an 67 runs to draw this series at 1-1. Great comeback by England, Nasser?

Nasser Hussain: Oh Yes. Fantastic comeback. Stuff of champions really. Not only have England won this test match, they have won it in style. And though the series is officially drawn, I think England are the actual winners of this series. They batted brilliantly in their 1st innings, and bowled well and made full use of the pitch and conditions, and never gave India any chance watsoever in this test match. Today is no doubt a great day for English cricket and the fans.

David Gower: Yes, and I think that hundred from Graham Thorpe at the end made the difference, dint it?

Nasser Hussain: Yes, definately. With all due to credit to the England bowlers as well, you have to remember that this was an extremely difficult wicket to bat on. And to score a 139 on this wicket again a good Indian bowling attack, and coming to bat at a stage when England were 33-3, and then going and getting that century, was I think absolutely marvellous. Graham Thorpe has been England's most consistent and important batsman for a long time now.

David Gower: Well thanks Nasser for your views and analysis. It been a fantastic test match, with the better team winning at the end. Join us for the Natwest Series live and exclusive here on Sky Sports. Till then from all of us here at Edgbaston, Birmingham, its goodbye.

Day and Night Match

edgbaston.jpg

Welcome to Birmingham for this 1st match between England and India in the Natwest Trinations series. Both teams have just come off a recently concluded npower test series, which ended 1-1. England however a slight edge coming into this tournament, after an innings victory over the Indians here at Edgbaston itself in the 2nd test. However, we know it a whole new ball game now, and both teams will want to take the early initiative in this NatWest series.

Conditions: Its a bright and sunny day here at Birmingham for this day nighter between England and India. Its very cool though, and it will get cooler in the night. No chance of rain, and good match in prospect.
conditions.jpg

Pitch: A hard surface here at Edgbaston, completely different to the soft and damp one we had in the 2nd test. The outfield is lightning fast, which means we could see a lot of fours. However its not a total batting paradise, as there is a lot of bounce on this hard wicket. A score of 260-270 will be a good score on this wicket, and anything more will be a bonus for the batting side. I would suggest batting first on this wicket, as it is always going to be difficult chasing a large total under lights.

pitch.jpg

The Toss: Saurav Ganguly won the toss and elected to bat first.

Teams:
ENGLAND
England are obviously without Andrew Flintoff, who will miss the entire series due a knee injury, and Marcus Trescothick, who is missing this game due to a back pain. Robert Key who wasnt in the initial England squad for the Natwest series, has been included in the starting lineup, while Kevin Pieterson replaces Andrew Flintoff. Also James Anderson has been left out of the starting XI, as England have decided to go with Harmison, Hoggard and Gough.

INDIA
India have pretty much their standard XI, with three pace bowlers in Zaheer Khan, Balaji and Ajit Agarkar. Harbhajan Singh is the lone specialist spinner in the side, but we do know Saurav Ganguly can always use the likes of Sehwag, Sachin and Yuvraj as part time spin bowlers. Rahul Dravid will be keeping wicket.
