The 2005 Ashes: 1st Test in Lords, England

ss-logo-07.gif

Welcome to Sky Sports' coverage of the 1st Test of the 2005 Ashes series. We are currently at Lords, the home of cricket, to witness two of the greatest teams fight out to claim the 'Urn'. Lord`s is Australia`s home away from home and England dont win many games against Australia on this ground. England will look to bounce back from their disastrous 4-1 loss on the previous Ashes series. Both sides have very strong sides. Now,lets have a good look at the pitch in Lord`s.

Untitled-1.jpg

The pitch certainly looks like it favours the batsmen, I dont think the ball will bounce too much, and it wont spin too much, but could turn a little more at Day 4 or 5. So if i was the captain who won the toss, I would definitely have a bat. Speaking of the toss, lets go down to Michael Holding and witness the coin toss for the 1st Ashes Test Match at Lords.

Untitled3.jpg
:Thanks boys, lets welcome the captains of the Australians and English teams. Ricky Ponting, your call.

Untitled1.jpg
:Heads, mate.

Untitled3.jpg
:Heads, it is, what are you going to do Ricky?

Untitled1.jpg
:Um, we`ll have a bat i reckon. Its doesnt seem to do much for the bowlers, the bounce`s not great, theres not much turn, our openers will enjoy batting on this pitch i reckon. So hopefully we`ll get a good first innings total.

Untitled3.jpg
: Now Michael Vaughan, not the best of starts, losing the toss. What were you going to do?

Untitled2.jpg
:We were going to have a bat as well, with the pitch obviously being a good batting pitch. But unfortunately the toss didnt go our way but we have a talented bowling side and we will look to get a few wickets and contain their run-rate on the first day.

Untitled3.jpg
: Thank you to Ricky Ponting and Michael Vaughan, back to you guys.

Thank you Michael Holding for the coin toss. The Aussies have won the toss , which is a good start for them. We all know how good Australia`s openers are, consisting of Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden. England`s opening bowlers will look to get them out to give the pressure to the Australians. I reckon all-rounder Freddie Flintoff might get a chance with the new ball, especially after his excellent form during the warm-up matches and such. The Australians have a star-studded top batting order, consisting of Langer,Hayden,Ponting, Hussey, Clarke and Gilchrist. Its going to be a very tough day for the English side today indeed. Now we are going off to a break, but before we do, we will announce the squads for both teams for the 1st Ashes Test Match. We`ll hope to see you, the viewers from all around the world, after the break as we bring you the opening ball of the first Test.

Sky Sports Morning Session Report

ss-logo-07.gif

The Morning session of the 1st day of the 1st Ashes Test at Lord`s was Australia`s session, as their opening batsmen, Hayden and Langer were on fire, finishing the morning session off for Australia with 123 without loss. Monty Panesar, the England spinner and Mahmood, England`s opening fast bowler has been very expensive, going at 4-5 runs per over, they will have to improve if they wants to pose a threat to the Australian batting line-up. Speaking of the English bowlers, they didnt bowl as well as they should`ve and will have to keep that in mind if they want to avoid the Australian team getting a big first-innings score. Another highlight of the morning was Matthew Hayden`s half-century, true to his aggressive personality, he was in a one-day mode as he hit 78 not out off 99 balls with 9 fours in the morning session. Justin Langer has been solid as well and is closing in to his half-century. The Englishmen need to take 2-3 wickets in the Afternoon session to put the pressure on the Australian batting line-up, but that wont be too easy, with the next man in being one of the best batsmen in the world and the skipper of the Australian team, Ricky Ponting, and the talented young batsman, Michael Clarke. Australia are in a solid position here and they will be looking to continue on that as they go on to the Afternoon session of the 1st Ashes Test. We , from the Sky Sports team, will see you after the break when both teams make their way back on the field at Lord`s to start the 2nd session of the 1st Ashes Test.

No Warne? and why the hell is Lee batting at 7, put Martyn in at 6 and Gilchrist to 7 then move Lee and Gillespie down one then take Kasper out.

Very interesting line up man, I think England could have you!

meh, i forgot about Martyn, i was wondering why i had Katich in there :p I dont know why but i cant put Warne on, his name`s black. Does that mean he`s injured? ( I dont play ICC09 much, and thats what it meant in ICC3) I`ll replace Katich with Martyn and i`ll try to put Warne in in the 2nd test.

Langerhalf-century.jpg

(Justin Langer gets his solid half-century)

2:33 pm: Here comes Flintoff...Its pitched on middle-stump...Hayden drives it down the ground for 4, and that brings up Matthew Hayden`s century, and also the 150-run partnership for Hayden and Langer, great start by the openers.

sport-graphics-2008_689035a.jpg
(Matthew Hayden gets his hard-fought century off 129 balls)

2:34 pm: Monty Panesar comes in...Matthew Hayden tries to sweep it, it thumps on his pads..the whole English side shouts in appeal.. He`s OUT! Matthew Hayden has departed just 2 balls after his century, and departs for 103. And that brings in the skipper, Ricky Ponting.

(Monty Panesar appeals for LBW and dismisses danger-man Matthew Hayden)

3:54 pm: Its the last over of the session and Flintoff starts the over.. its going down the leg-side and Langer clips it off his legs for FOUR! And that brings up Justin Langer`s well-earned century, what a day for the openers with both scoring centuries.

Sky Sports Afternoon Session Report

Welcome back Sky Sports' coverage of the 2009 Ashes 1st Test as we go through the Afternoon Session. Once again, the England bowlers weren't getting much wickets, with the only wicket they got was from Monty Panesar , getting the aggresive Matthew Hayden just 2 balls after his deserved century. Another batsmen who got a well-deserved century was Hayden`s opening partner, Justin Langer. It wasnt the fastest of centuries, but it was a much-needed one. Skipper Ricky Ponting is looking good so far, scoring an agressive 44 not out off 57 balls. Australia are just doing everything right at the moment, whilst the Englishmen need to step it up, they need to get the wickets in the final session of today`s play to stop Australia`s dominance. England`s opening bowler Sajid Mahmood is really struggling bowling against the Australian batting line-up at the moment, he`s been too expensive and has conceded 82 runs off just 15 overs, Michael Vaughan won`t be too happy with the way Sajid Mahmood is going at the moment. Well thats it for the Afternoon Session Report, and we`ll hope to see you when Sky Sport`s coverage of the 1st Test continues in the Evening Session. See you after the break.

Langer you beauty! What an innings, typical Justin Langer.

Hayden did what he does best, another good opening partnership between these two legends. 257/1 is absolutely wonderful. If Langer and Ponting build here, the day would definitely go to the Aussies. Great presentation by the way!

Why is Monty playing in the '05 Ashes? Was he even playing County Cricket back then? :p

Australia in a strong position after the second position also want to correct you on one thing.

3:54 pm: Its the last over of the day and Flintoff starts the over.. its going down the leg-side and Langer clips it off his legs for FOUR! And that brings up Justin Langer`s well-earned century, what a day for the openers with both scoring centuries.

Bolded part should say last over of the session.
