Story Englands attempts to become the best (ICC2006 Ashes Edition)

It is only a 2 test series what with the small matter of an Ashes series. Panesar is now top of the bowlers rankings! All top 4 batsman are mine too! Cook, KP, Bell and Vaughan.

Finish the story now, you are now the best in the world. :p *Says this before the Aussie series*

I still want to be top of the ODI rankings though. The title could end up changing though!

It did. I'm 5th. Aus, Pakistan and New Zealand all have 5 points, RSA have 4, I've got 3. These are the positive points btw, I can gain 4 points in the ODIs this summer.

2nd Test, unchanged.

On a gorgeous batting strip we won the toss and chose to have a bat first. Vaughan fell very early to the bowling of Tuffey as the captain edges to 3rd slip. Kp joined Cook as we needed to consolidate, they put on an excellent 102 runs for the 2nd wicket, when Cook fell to the bowling of Oram, bowled. Neither Bell nor Collingwood could put on a partnership with KP, but they did add a total of 52 runs for those 3rd and 4th wickets, Oram got Bell and Franklin got Collingwood. Flintoff joined KP and the two hard hitting batsman put on 107 for the 5th wicket, when Kp fell for 133 to the bowling of Shaw, another excellent Kp hundred. Prior joined Flintoff as we were struggling to get a good total on this wicket, they both played wonderful innings and put on a huge 201 runs for the 6th wicket, excellent stuff, Prior finally fell for 105 (4th test hundred iirc) to the obwling of Oram. Flintoff put on another big partnership with Plunkett as they put on 80 for the 7th wicket, when Franklin got Plunkett out for 35, lbw. Flintoff was 9th man out for his maiden test double hundred, gone for 110. We declared when he fell, 592-9 declared. Oram 4-162, Tuffey 2-100, Franklin 2-108, Shaw 1-54. KP passing 4,500 runs and Flintoff passing 5,000 runs in the longest form of cricket.

Fulton and Fleming put on a decent opening stand, in reply of our huge total, they put on 68 when Fleming fell to Harmison for 31. Fulton and Oram put on 46 for the 2nd wicket, when Fulton fell to Jones for a good 52. Vincent joined Oram and they put on 43 for the 3rd wicket, but Flintoff got a breakthrough as Vincent fell for 19. Oram was joined by Ryder, and they both looked in great touch, they put on an excellent 134 run stand for the 4th wicket, but Ryder fell to Jones for 70, Oram fell in jones next over for an excellent 106, with Panesar going for 16 in his previous over, to see Oram through to a hundred. McCullum fell to the bowling of Harmison, as we looked like being able to perhaps enforce the follow on. But Franklin and McMillan put 104 on for the 7th wicket, Jones, Flintoff and Harmison all got wickets at the end as we bowled them out for 422. McMillan made 55 and Franklin 43. Jones 4-72 and Harmison 4-66 bowled really well, Flintoff 2-64 got the other wickets.

We needed a decent total, to be able to try to win the game. Cook was batting well but yet again Vaughan failed at the top of the order, Kp and Cook put on 35 for the 2nd wicket, when KP fell for 19 to Shaw (who also got Vaughan). Bell and Cook put on an important stand of 83 for the 3rd wicket as our lead approached 300. Bell fell for 37 to Bond (who seems to have bowled very ltitle this match. Collingwood failed yet again in our bid for a lead of 400, but Flintoff (27) and Cook added 43 for the 5th wicket and Prior (15) and Cook added 38 for the 6th wicket, we declared when Cook fell for 109, as we made 230-7, we had our 400 run lead. Shaw 3-69, Tuggery 2-48, Oram and Bond got a wicket each.

The pitch was still good as we chased a 2-0 series win. Fulton fell early to Harmison, Fleming and Oram put on 57 for the 2nd wicket, but Fleming fell to Flintoff for 29. Vincent fell to Panesar and Oram and Ryder could only put 27 on for the 4th wicket, with Ryder getting 21 of that partnership. Flintoff got the wicket of Ryder. Oram and McMillan put on 58 for the 5th wicket, when Jones got McMillan for 19, Oram was playingn another blinder, and they eventually saved the game, with two more 50 run stands. 51 for the 7th wicket Franklin (19) and 56 unbeaten for the 8th with Bond (22*) as Oram finished 134*, 293-7, match drawn. Flintoff 3-57, Panesar 2-70. Jones and Harmison 1 wicket each.

3 ODIs next.

Sorry for the long delay lads.

20-20 vs New Zealand.

Team: Prior, Trescothick, KP, Colly, Flitnoff, Bell, Cook, Jones, Harmison, Davies and Panesar. We won the toss and chose to field first.

Fleming and Fulton got a great start putting on 69 for the opening wicket, before Fleming fell for 24 to Davies, who got Vincent and Oram in his same spell - he bowled all 4 on the trot - but Jones was proving expensive. Flintoff came in and bowled really well as did Collingwood. Fulton went on to make 45 but Ryder was the star of the innings with 53. Davies 3-21 and Flintoff 3-34 were the pick of the bowlers, Colly with 1-26 got the other wicket.

Tres fell early to Oram, but KP joined Prior and they put on 115 for the 2nd wicket when Kp fell on 52 to Mills. Collingwood fell to Tuffey and prior fell to Bond for an excellent 73. Flintoff and Bell had a lot to do, needing 21 runs from 10 balls for victory. We got 4 runs from the 19th over, leaving us needing 17 from the final over to win, with Flintoff facing.

First ball: Wide ball, driven for 4 through the covers.
Second ball: Played and missed as Flintoff tries to drive.
Third ball: A flick down to fine leg and they pick up two.
Fourth ball: Full toss! Hit back over the bowlers head for 4!
Fifth ball: Edged past the keeper for 4. England need 3 from the last ball for victory.
Sixth ball: Flintoff hits it to wide third man, they manage two runs.

A tied game, Flintoff with 22* from 11 balls batted well to get a result out of the game.

Squad for the first ODI:

KP, Bell, Vaughan, Compton, Prior, Trescothick, Cook, Colly, Flintoff, Jones, Harmison, Davies, Panesar, Rashid and Tremlett.

Compton, Cook, Rashid and Tremlett miss out for the first game, we lost the toss and were put in to bat.

Tres and Vaughan put on a decent 40 run opening wicket, before the captain fell for just 9 as he struggled to find some rhythm. Oram got Vaughan and Ryder got the big wicket of KP in his first over! Tres and Colly put on 35 for the 3rd wicket (Mills got Colly), Tres and Bell put on 47 for the 4th wicket when the Somerset opener falls for 86 to Bond. It was a great effort by Bell and Flintoff who put on 105 for the 5th wicket, Bell fell in the last over for 66. Flitnoff finished 61* and Prior just 2* from 2 balls. 260-5. Bell passed 1,000 ODI runs and Tres passed 6,500 runs.

We needed an early wicket and we got that as Harmison got Fulton for just 14, he got Fleming in his next over for 10, both LBW. Oram and Vincent put on 39 for the 3rd wicket, when Jones got the big breakthrough of Vincent for 18, bowled. Ryder and Oram put on 48 for the 4th wicket in the Kiwis biggest stand, Oram fell for 37 to Panesar. Panesar bowled an excellent stint, bowling 10 overs 4-34 (Oram, McCullum, McMillan and lastly Franklin), a massive contribution, But Ryder was still at the other end, he and Franklin had put on 42 for the 7th wicket. The Kiwis finished on 224 all out, Flintoff getting Mills last man. Panesar 4-34 was the pick of the bowlers and he was MOTM. Harmison took 3-37 and Colly and Flintoff got one each. Harmison and Collingwood go into the next game on 99 wickets. Ryder finished on 88, an excellent all round performance.

A win in the next game takes me to the top, as I have 3 points and the Kiwis 5.

2nd ODI, Tremlett in for Simon Jones, we won the toss and chose to field first.

Fulton and Fleming made a decent start putting on 48 for the first stand, when Tremlett had Fulton out LBW for 22, Flintoff got Fleming in his first over for 23. Collingwood got Vincent in his 2nd over for just 3 as Collingwood passed 100 ODI wickets. Ryder came in and he and Oram put on 31 for the 4th wicket, but Oram fell for 21 to Panesar. McMillan and McCullum put on 69 for the 6th wicket as they helped get the Kiwis a total of note. McCullum finished the inings 58*, McMillan fell to Flintoff for 35, Flintoff also got Ryder for 30. 206-6 after 50 overs, Flitnoff 3-37 was the pick of the bowlers. Collingwood, Panesar and Tremlett with the other wickets.

Vaughan and Trescothick got us off to a great start, playing well - if a litle conservatively in Vaughan's case - and they put on an excellent 103 for the opening stand, when Tres fell for 61 to the bowling of Mills. KP came in and was the dominant partner in a partnership of 48 with Vaughan, he fell to Ryder for 30. Vaughan fell in the next over for 69 to the bowling of Franklin. Collingwood and Bell still needed 42 to get us home, which they did, Colly finished 33* and Bell finished 13*, a win by 7 wickets, and that gives us the series win, 2-0 up with 1 to play.

3rd ODI, 3 changes to the team, Cook, Compton and Rashid in for KP, Vaughan and Davies. We won the toss and again chose to put them in first.

Harmison gave us a great start and with the wicket of Fleming he passed 100 ODI wickets. infact he and Tremlett got us 3 quick wickets as Fulton and Oram joined Fleming back in the pavillion. But Vincent was playing really well, taking it upon himself to get the Black Caps a competitive score. Vincent and Ryder put on 70 for the 4th wicket, but Ryder fell to Collingwood for 29. Vincent and McMillan put on 43 for the 5th wicket when McMillan fell to Rashid, who bowled 10 overs, 1-23. Vincent and McCullum put on 35 for the 6th wicket, when McCullum fell to Harmison, Vincent and Frankling added 41 for the 7th wicket, Vincent finally fell for an excellent 118, he went to Harmison. 213-7, Franklin was 19* at the end of the innings. Harmison 4-35 was the pick of the bowlers, with Colly, Rashid and Tremlett all getting a wicket each.

We had a poor start as Tres fell for 14 and Bell - promoted to bat at number three - made just 12, Compton joined Cook with the score on 28-2, an uphlll task, surely too much for this inexperienced and new pair? They were absolutely stunning, both going along at their own pace, not letting the rpo get over 5.5 at any stage after our poor start. They saw us home putting on an excellent 176 for the 3rd wicket, Cook got his hundred just before the end, finishing on 102*, Compton finished on 85*, excellent win.

The Kiwi's beat New Zealand so they didn't drop any points in the league table, but I am level with them in 2nd place.

Next up, the Ashes!
