Europa League Thread

OK, we've deserved to get beaten tonight, but can someone explain what that freekick - that led directly to their third goal - was for?? I didn't see any foul or anything that looked remotely like a foul.

Good - at least we're still in touch, thanks to Rooney's penalty. But were it not for the magnificent De Gea tonight, we would've been hammered. A big, big ask for us in the next game, but then again, we've been better away from home in Europe this year - by far. Dunno what's gone wrong with us at home in Europe this season. :facepalm

Corner kick...

And another one...

And that's it. 3-2 to Atletic, but I still want to know what the hell that freekick was for that led to their third goal.

Riiiight - so we're 3-2 down because Evra's boot came off? That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard in my life - what a retarded rule. How exactly is a player gaining anything by playing on with only one bloody boot????

So what's that, even the non top two Spanish clubs are beating one of our top two at home.

Good lord the technical level of the Premiership at the moment really is at an incredible low compared to the rest of the world. The defending is absolutely dreadful, and no one can actually pass a football.

A 3-2 scoreline is the least Bilbao deserved to take home tonight. Absolutely scintillating to watch - Muniain and Llorente in special. David De Gea had his best game in a United shirt, without whom, the tie would have been absolutely killed off.

Oh and the Blue Tossers lost too! I wasn't wrong when I said Sporting had been better than Porto in Europe this season. Looked far more threatening in front of goal than their counterpart Portuguese rivals.

Yeah, at least Blue Plastic lost as well - but they'll pull that back at the United Stadium. What do you make of the freekick that led to Bilbao's third goal?

In any case, this isn't over - we've been much better away from home in Europe, but it is gonna be tough.

Ref had an interesting moment :p

Yeah, still think City will be ok, although surely the best piece of news for United, was the potential injury to Kompany?

Oh - I didn't know that. Nothing personal against the guy, but if he's out for a bit that'll mess City up good.

Not this season. Drew with Benfica, lost to Basel and only managing a win against Otelul Galati and Ajax!

Furthermore, Bilbao have only failed to score ONCE in 21 home games this season and have only lost TWICE. Both were 1 goal margin defeats too.

Bielsa is a certified genius.

Done. :p

Yeah apparently he went off, not sure if it was precautionary or not. Be a huge loss if they lose him for a few games.

I dont know the rule books, but I grew up knowing if the boot is off, its a foul. That wasnt the worst part of the third goal it was Rafaels poor thought process. What was he thinking?

I think the second goal was offside, but Bilbao really deserved everything they got. They did make quite a bit of fouls, but the really worrying part was no one barring Evans seemed to be making an effort at tackling. Jones still really fails to impress me, and I was so glad to see Carrick coming on lol.

We havent realistically lost it, but we really need to come up good if we want to go to the next round. Rooney seemed to be one of our best players and the 1st goal was brilliant orchestrated. Hernandez had a disappointing game, twice I felt he was in goal-scoring position, yet he didnt make the most of it. I'd rather prefer to see Berbatov getting some game time. De Gea seems to be coming up really well. Lindegaard is solid, but on his days De Gea can be spectacular.

I think it's the most stupid rule in the whole book. How can playing with one boot on constitute a foul? How can it confer an advantage on the 'offending' player? Isn't it more accurate that it confers a disadvantage on the player? Sure, the defending after that was terrible but that doesn't make up for the fact that the freekick should never even have happened.

We've still played better in those games than we have done at home. Still, we'll see.

Good results for the three La Liga sides. Even Pathetico got a win.

Emery will though no doubt be annoyed by letting in those two (away) goals and giving PSV some hope in the second leg.

As far as Athletic-United is concerned, I am not surprised. Athletic are a quality side and have probably half of the future Spanish NT. But what I liked most was how they did not settle for a draw. Bielsa tactics were spot on too, especially in the second half.

Well once again we've seen that unless either Vidic or Ferdinand are in the defence, they don't know what they're doing. Our attacking was very good, but we had many problems in defence. Hernandez wasn't on it at all - in fact he rarely seems to impress when he starts games. He's Ole reborn - not much of a starter, but one hell of a super-sub!
