Everton Overview and History

200px-Everton_FC_Crest-colour.svg.png

Formed: 1878
Previous names: St Domingo's FC
Admitted to Football League: 1888
European Cup Winners' Cup: 1984-85
First Division: 1890?91, 1914?15, 1927?28, 1931?32, 1938?39, 1962?63, 1969?70, 1984?85, 1986?87
Second Division: 1930?31
FA Cup: 1906, 1933, 1966, 1984, 1995

No English side has spent more of its life at the top table than Everton. They have played more matches in the highest division than any other club, and have been outside it for only four years since they were founder members of the Football League in 1888. In that time they have won 15 major honours, including nine league titles.

Everton were originally called St Domingo's, having been founded by members of St Domingo's Methodist Church in 1878. They won their first title in 1890 and finished as runners-up five times before their next championship, in 1915.

They also won their first FA Cup in 1906, beating Newcastle 1-0, but Everton experienced the first of eight FA Cup final defeats a year later. The Twenties brought one of the most improbable championship wins in 1928; it was sandwiched between finishes of 20th and 18th. The reason for their triumph was not far to seek. The astonishing form of Dixie Dean, whose 60 league goals remains an English top-flight record, propelled Everton to the championship.

Dean's output remained extraordinary - his 383 goals for the club are more than twice Graeme Sharp in second place - yet despite that Everton were relegated for the first time in 1930. They were promoted at the first attempt - and then won the title in their first season back in the top flight. There was another FA Cup victory in 1933, and Everton were also champions in the final season before the war.

They struggled after the war, spending three seasons in Division Two from 1951 to 1954, but the appointment of Harry Catterick as manager in 1961 was the catalyst for another period of success. Everton were champions in 1963 and won the FA Cup in extraordinary circumstances three years later, coming from 2-0 down to beat Sheffield Wednesday.

That team won another championship in 1970, yet it would be an otherwise forgettable decade, not least because of the rampant success of their rivals Liverpool. It was not until Howard Kendall made a number of shrewd lower-league signings in the early Eighties that Everton again tasted success. They won the FA Cup in 1984 and then enjoyed their best-ever season the following year. As well as romping to the title, Everton won the Cup Winners' Cup and were beaten in the FA Cup final.

Another title followed two years later, but the loss of Kendall to Athletic Bilbao in 1987 precipitated a decline that seeped into the Nineties. Everton came desperately close to relegation in 1994, coming from 2-0 down to beat Wimbledon 3-2 on a madcap final day. The following year, Joe Royle's 'Dogs of War' won the FA Cup, but for the most part this was Everton's lost decade. They also avoided relegation on the final day of the 1997-98 season and finished in the top half of the table only once between 1992 and 2002.

Then came the appointment of the unheralded David Moyes, whose shrewd management revitalised the club. Everton finished fourth in 2005 - the first time in 18 years that they had finished above Liverpool - and thereafter established themselves as one of the best of those battling below the Premier League's glass ceiling. They also reached the FA Cup final in 2009, where they were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea, and after another season just below the European places, slowly but surely, Everton were getting back to where they belonged.

Everton complete Maniche signing
July 7th, 2011

n9eya.jpg

Everton have confirmed the signing of former Benfica, FC Porto, Dinamo Moscow, Chelsea (loan), Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and FC Koln midfielder Maniche on a free transfer. The 33-year-old who was a free agent for a short period of time after his contract with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon expired at the end of last season. He has made fifty three appearances for the Portugal national team scoring seven goals since making his debut in 2003.

Maniche brings in vast experience to the Everton team having won the Portuguese League twice, the Intercontinental Cup, the Portuguese Cup, the Champions League and the UEFA Cup with FC Porto. The midfielder has also won the Premier League during his loan spell with Chelsea and the Serie A in 2007-08 with Inter Milan.

Slovakian keeper Jan Mucha has joined La Liga giants Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal. Mucha was surplus to demands at Goodison Park, after the Toffees recently completing the signing of former Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann on a free transfer.

Everton sell Saha to Newcastle
July 15th, 2011

RC2ZP.jpg

Newcastle United have completed the signing of France striker Louis Saha from Everton for a fee of ?3.8million. The 33-year-old striker who joined Everton from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2008, made around ninety-five appearances for the Goodison Park club in all competitions scoring thirty-three goals.

Saha despite being an important player for the team was sold to generate funds to buy new players during the ongoing transfer window. Reports also stated that he had recently fallen out with manager David Moyes after his comments on the club's transfer policies, on the social networking site Twitter.

Saha has bagged just nineteen caps for his national team France scoring just four goals. He was the member of the France squad that lost the World Cup 2006 final to Italy. During his time at Manchester United, Saha won the Premier League twice, the League Cup and the Champions league once. He also won the Championship with Fulham in 2000-01.

Toffees bring in Evans on loan
July 23rd, 2011

CE1u0.jpg

David Moyes has brought in the Northern Ireland international defender Jonny Evans on a season-long loan from Manchester United. The Toffees paid around ?750,000 to bring the 22-year-old to Goodison Park and also have an option of ?5million to make the deal permanent.

Evans, who became the fifth choice centre-back behind Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling and the new-signing Phil Jones, has made around forty-eight Premier League appearances since making his debut in 2008. Evans started the last season longside Nemanja Vidic in the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand but his poor form meant that he lost his place to former Fulham man Chris Smalling.

Moyes looks to add some youth in his defence and Evans could be the right man, who can also also play as a left-back. The arrival of Jonny Evans could mean the exit of the former Pompey and City defender Sylvain Distin.

Baggies sign Distin from Everton
July 26th, 2011

ia8xG.jpg

As expected since the arrival of Jonny Evans on a season-long loan from Manchester United, Sylvain Distin has left the club and joined Roy Hodgson's West Brom Albion for a transfer fee around ?2.5m

The 33-year-old, who had a successful time with both Manchester City and Portsmouth in the Premier League, had made around sixty-nine appearances for the Goodison Park club since joining the club in August 2009. He also scored twice for the Toffees during his time at the club.

Distin, who has never ever represented his country France at the international stage, has signed a three-year contract with the Baggies and will be paid around ?40,500 per week. He will wear the 15 number jersey as he looks forward to help Roy Hodgson's side to finish in the top half of the League.

You should look to sign one striker though, as you're currently short in that area.

Yep, I know but I don't have the funds to sign any striker at the moment. I tried for Macheda and Welbeck on a season-long loan but only one long-term loan is allowed from each team.

Maybe Cahill will play as a striker if Stracqualursi gets injured or Jose Baxter the youngster.

I am playing with the latest transfers so Lukaku is in Chelsea, Balotelli is available on loan but his wages are like 100,000 per week that's not at all affordable for me. Chamakh won't leave Arsenal while Chelsea don't want to send Sturridge on loan.

Everton loan Kranjcar from Tottenham
August 4th, 2011

6tRZH.jpg

David Moyes has added another talented midfielder in his team by signing Tottenham's Niko Kranjcar on a season-long loan. Everton have paid around ?250,000 to take the Croatian on loan to Goodison Park and also have an option to make the deal permanent.

The former Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split midfielder followed Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth to Tottenham Hotspur in September 2009 for a fee of ?6.5million. But the Croatian international who has sixty-six caps to his name playing for his national team failed to be a regular starter for the Spurs since the rise of Gareth Bale.

Kranjcar who won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2009, has made just forty-one appearances for the White Hart Lane club during his two years at the club (most of them coming as a substitute) and has found the back of the net eight times.
