once you've edited , say a face, how do you turn the face back to default without setting all the kits and other faces back to defaults?....if you can at all?

Take a copy of it by saving before you replace it.

all you do is save the original face that you are going to replace. replace the face, and if you wish to change it back convert the original face to 256 color, flip it vertically and put it back over the edited face
