Hello,

Currently I know next to nothing about Cricket but always wanted to understand it more and was strongly thinking about picking up this game. However, before I do, can anyone recommend a web site that might be best at explaining the concept/rules/terms of Cricket? Hoping for a web site that truly is for beginners that does a great job in explaining all the basics and wouldn't even mind if it included some of the commonly accepted strategies. I realize I could easily do a web search, but hoping the experienced people around here might be able to point me towards the best.

Just want to make sure before making the investment in the game that I really understand things and even though I don't know anything about the sport, I always like to learn new things...that's half the fun/challenge!

Appreciate any thoughts.

My fellow American,

When I first started learning about cricket, this site was wonderful for me: http://www.dangermouse.net/cricket/

The author even makes references and comparisons to baseball in order to explain certain facets of cricket.

Keep at it and you'll be reading Mike Brearley's Art of Captaincy like I'm currently doing :)

As silly as it may sound, buy a cricket video game. The best way to learn any game is to play it. Well I know here in North America it can be difficult to play cricket, so a video game is a useful alternative. I used that method to learn Rugby, Aussie Rules football and Cricket.

And although we are a cricket backwater in North America, the first ever international match was played between Canada and the USA in 1844 and the oldest international trophy (The K.A. Auty Cup) is played for by our countries. So we do have some interesting, if minor history in the game.
