Pune, Kochi named new IPL teams

Chirayu Amin reveals the two new IPL teams

Sahara Group and Rendezvous Sports - a consortium of business houses - pipped three other corporate biggies to win the bids for two new Indian Premier League teams from the next season.

Sahara Adventure Sports Group was the highest bidder at $370 million and bagged Pune as the host city. Kerala-based consortium Rendezvous Sports bid $333 million to get Kochi as the other franchisee to make the IPL a 10-team affair from 2011.

"There were five qualified bids and the bidding was extremely competitive. I hope they make good business," IPL chairman and commissioner Chirayu Amin said, announcing the bid results. In the first IPL auction three years back, eight teams were sold for Rs.2,840 crore while this time the two new teams fetched an astronomical Rs.3,035.53 crore. "It only shows that there is no recession for the IPL," Amin said.

The other bidders in fray, Adani Enterprises, Mahindra Satyam and Videocon, lost out.

Amin said the Sahara Group had the option of choosing from Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Pune as their home. The corporate from Lucknow picked Pune as its host city. "Sahara bid for Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Pune and was asked to settle for one city. After a lot of thinking, they settled for Pune." Amin said.

The two new teams will join eight franchisees that have been part of the IPL for three years: Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

With 10 teams, the next edition of the IPL will have a total of 74 games under the existing format, which now has 60 matches involving eight teams.

If I'm not missing anything, it should be 74 games. Unless you're making your own fixtures...

Looking forward to this, since it's my own city.

Waugh to coach Pune franchise

6078848020eca68a39f5142.jpg

Steve Waugh Pune's new coach

Steve Waugh, the former Australian batsman and 1999 World Cup winning captain, has been confirmed as the coach of the new Pune franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Waugh will be the seventh Australian after Geoff Lawson, Shane Warne, Dav Whatmore, Michael Beven, Darren Leahmann and Greg Shipperd to coach an IPL team. Times of India have reported that Waugh will sign a three-year deal with the Pune franchise tomorrow. The stint will be Waugh's first serious coaching assignment since retiring from cricket almost seven years ago.

Waugh was sounded out last week as a candidate and was expected to take a call last Friday. The franchise officials did not, however, reveal any further details on the team's composition. The players' auction is set to take place in Mumbai on Sunday with a host of international players already signed up.

Four local players have to be selected in the squad and Subroto Roy, the owner of the franchise, said a Ranji Trophy player would be given a $50,000 contract while an Under-22 player would be offered a minimum of $20,000. The tournament begins on April 8.

Gambhir becomes costliest player, while Ganguly and Lara go unsold

unled1t.jpg

Gautam Gambhir becomes IPL's most expensive player

Opener Gautam Gambhir became the costliest cricketer in the IPL by fetching a whopping $2.4 million (Rs 11.04 crore) on the first day of the auctions where Indian players proved to be the biggest draw with three others going for more than $2 million.

In a high-profile auction, where Bollywood stars and corporate bigwigs were locked in a bidding war, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Gambhir for the mind-boggling sum, beating the previous high set by the English duo of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff ($1.55 million) last season.

Shah Rukh Khan was not present in person but his Kolkata Knight Riders, which had been reduced to an also-ran in the last two seasons, proved to be the big spender of the day by also buying hard-hitting all-rounders Yusuf Pathan ($2.1 million) and Jacques Kallis ($1.1 million) for the fourth edition of event to be held from April 8 to May 20.

Gambhir, who was captain of the Delhi Daredevils last season, saw his price skyrocket 12 times from his base price of $200,000 (Rs92 lakh) while three other Indian players -- Yusuf ($2.1 million), Rohit Sharma ($2 million) and Robin Uthappa ($2.1 million) crossed the two million mark.

Yusuf's younger brother Irfan, who has not played any cricket this season, was taken by Delhi Daredevils for a surprisingly high amount of $1.9 million (Rs8.74 crore). But there were some surprise names in the unsold list with former India and KKR captain Sourav Ganguly, West Indies batting star Chris Gayle and the legendary Brian Lara failing to find a buyer.

The bidding trend at the auction at times appeared to defy logic but what was certain was that the franchises were willing to spend big money on the Indian players. Mahela Jayawardene was the most expensive foreign player going to Kochi at $1.5 million (Rs6.90 crore).

Cricket aside, Bollywood stars Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty provided the glamour quotient while liquor baron Vijay Mallya, his son Siddharth, Nita Ambani and Nusli Wadia added the corporate aura at the auction. Cricketing brains such as Anil Kumble, Robin, Stephen Fleming, Geoff Lawson and Darren Lehmann, who have been roped in either as coaches or mentors by the franchises, helped them work out the bidding strategies.

As expected, big money was spent but the way it was spent on some players was baffling. Robin Uthappa, who has been out of national reckoning for quite some time, was bought for an astounding $2.1 million (Rs 9.66 crore) by the Pune team who opened their account by buying Yuvraj Singh for $1.8 million (Rs 8.28 crore). Pune got Yuvraj, the icon player of Kings XI Punjab till last season, after beating Team Kochi and the batsman's former team in the bid. Even Rohit Sharma's price of $2 million (Rs 9.2 crore), which Mumbai Indians paid, came as a surprise in an auction where proven T20 specialists such as Herschelle Gibbs, Mark Boucher and Graeme Swann went unsold.

There was intense bidding for Gambhir, who was the first player under the hammer, from Pune and Mumbai before KKR joined the fray after it crossed the million dollar mark. Kings XI Punjab also lost the bid of Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene who was bought by Kochi for USD 1.5 million.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Zaheer Khan for $900,000 and dashing Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for $650,000. However, the Vijay Mallya-owned franchise had a prize catch in talented South African AB de Villiers, buying him for $1.1 million (Rs 5.06 crore). They also got New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori for only $550,000.

The Rajasthan Royals bought New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor for $1 million (Rs 4.6 crore). But what turned out to be a surprise was South African off-spinner Johan Botha being bought after a lot of bidding for $950,000. However, Kevin Pietersen, who was one of the most sought after players in the second and third edition, was bought by Deccan Chargers for $650,000 much less than his million dollar price in the earlier years. Andrew Symonds, who was one of the costliest players during season one, was bought for $850,000 by Mumbai Indians.

After the first two rounds, Team Kochi had bought the maximum five players (Mahela Jayawardene, Brendon McCullum, VVS Laxman, S Sreesanth and Rudra Pratap Singh). Kochi were quite lucky to buy McCullum for as low a price as $475,000 considering his reputation as a T20 dasher. Team Pune were also a gainer as they got South African captain Graeme Smith for USD 500,000 only.

Kings XI Punjab who lost all their key players including the Lankan duo of Kumar Sangakkara (bought by Deccan Chargers for $650,000) and Jayawardene ($1.5 million for Kochi) and Yuvraj to Pune finally had something to cheer when they successfully bid for former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist for $900,000.

After the lunch break, there were some more surprises with the young Saurabh Tiwary bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $1.6 million (Rs 7.36 crore). Punjab also spent $1.4 million (approx Rs 6.34 crore) on Australian David Hussey.

South African speedster Dale Steyn, who made life difficult for Indian batsmen during the recent drawn Test series, was bought by Deccan Chargers for $1.2 million (Rs 5.5 crore). Australia's injury-plagued speedster Brett Lee went for his base price of $400,000 to Kolkata after failing to invite a bid for quite a while in the auction. South Africans were hot picks at the auction with Steyn's pace partner Morne Morkel going to Delhi at $475,000.

Following is the team-wise list of cricketers sold on the first day of the Indian Premier League players auction in Bangalore today.

Unknown Christian clinches huge deal as Ganguly remains unsold

unled1x.jpg

Daniel Christian goes for 18 times his base price

Reputations counted for little as former India captain Sourav Ganguly and several other big names found no takers for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League even as unheard Australian Daniel Christian was bought for an astounding $900,000 (Rs 4.14 crore) on the second day of the auction.

Veteran Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya also failed to find a buyer, joining a high-profile list of unsold players which included, among others, West Indies batting great Brian Lara, Chris Gayle, Mark Boucher and Graeme Swann. Ganguly's name, in fact, did not even come up in the second round of bidding, the players for which were handpicked by the franchises.

A total of 241 of the 353 players in the fray remained unsold in the first round of auctions, which spanned two days. Twenty-eight players came up for re-auctioning on the request of the franchises but, strangely enough, some of them again remained unsold.

New Zealand's hard-hitting batsman Jesse Ryder (Pune, $150,000), spinner Murali Karthik (Pune, $400,000) and Mohammad Kaif (Bangalore, $130,000) were among the lucky dozen who managed to sneak into the cash-rich event. At the end of the two-day auction, all the franchises still had some money left from their $9 million kitty. The second day was rather dull considering that Gautam Gambhir went for a record Rs 11.04 crore to KKR on the first day.

On a relatively low-key day, it was Christian who hogged the limelight as he was bought by Deccan Chargers at 18 times his base price of $50,000. No one could have imagined that the 27-year-old from South Australia would go for such a high price. He has played just three Twenty20 internationals for Australia and is primarily a fast bowler who can hit the ball a long way in the lower order.

Delhi Daredevils were the biggest gainers as they snapped up fringe fast bowlers. Umesh Yadav, who had a base price of $50,000, went for a whopping $750,000 while pacers Ashok Dinda ($375,000) and Ajit Agarkar ($210,000) were also bought by the Daredevils. Munaf Patel was bought by Mumbai Indians for $700,000 (Rs 3.1 crore). Ranganath Vinay Kumar was bought by Kochi for $475,000 while Manpreet Gony was bought by Deccan for $290,000. But paceman VRV Singh was a prominent Indian bowler who remained unsold.

Chennai Super Kings, who were in retention mode, also got back Sudeep Tyagi ($240,000) and Joginder Sharma ($150,000) while roping in Suraj Randiv for as low as $80,000. But it was Kolkata Knight Riders who poached L Balaji from CSK for $500,000. KKR retained Jaidev Unadkat, buying him for $250,000.

There were a few surprises also as unfancied Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate was bought for $150,000 by Kolkata Knight Riders. Doeschate was the ICC's Associate Player of the Year. Another surprising pick was India discard Y Venugopal Rao, getting a staggering deal of $700,000 (Rs 3.22 crore) from Delhi Daredevils.

Pune team, who remained quiet for the better part of the first session, got a good deal in South African pacer Wayne Parnell ($160,000) and West Indian Jerome Taylor ($100,000). There was some stiff bidding between Pune and Kings XI Punjab for Australian Mitchell Marsh. However, the junior Marsh will play for Pune rather than being a teammate of elder brother Shaun.

Michael Yardy of England, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills of New Zealand, Ravi Bopara, Monty Panesar and Tim Bresnan of England and Fervez Maharoof of Sri Lanka, Shivnarine Chanderpaul of West Indies, Makhaya Ntini and Lonwabo Tsotsobe of South Africa were among the prominent players who went unsold.

After the lunch session, most players went unsold save for South African batsman Francois du Plessis who was taken by Chennai Super Kings at $120,000. Another surprise was Alfonso Thomas who was taken by Pune for $100,000. KKR bought Australian quick James Pattinson.

Like yesterday, Indians were the hot picks for the franchises, but the bidding war never quite touched the frenzy it did yesterday when, apart from Gambhir, three others went for more than $2 million.

Following is the team-wise list of cricketers sold on the second day of the Indian Premier League players auction in Bangalore today.

Chennai Super Kings:- Sudeep Tyagi($240,000), Scott Styris($200,000), Joginder Sharma($150,000), Francois du Plessis($120,000), Nuwan Kulasekara($100,000), Suraj Randiv($80,000), George Bailey($50,000)

Deccan Chargers:- Daniel Christian($900,000) MS Gony($290,000), Juan Theron($85,000), Michael Lumb($80,000), Chris Lynn($20,000)

Delhi Daredevils:- Umesh Yadav($750,000), Venu Gopal Rao($700,000), Ashok Dinda($375,000), Ajit Agarkar($210,000), Colin Ingram($100,000), Matthew Wade($100,000), Andrew McDonald($80,000), Roelof van der Merwe($50,000), Robert Frylinck($20,000), Travis Birt($20,000)

Kings XI Punjab:- Dimitri Mascerehnas($100,000) Nathan Rimmington($20,000)

Kochi:- Vinay Kumar($475,000), Owais Shah($200,000), Thisara Perera($80,000), Michael Klinger($75,000), John Hastings($20,000), Steven O'Keefe($20,000)

Kolkata Knight Riders:- L Balaji($500,000), Jaidev Unadkat($250,000), Ryan ten Doeschate($150,000), James Pattinson($100,000)

Mumbai Indians:- Munaf Pate($700,000), Clint McKay($110,000), Moises Henriques($50,000), Aiden Blizzard($20,000)

Pune:- Murali Kartik($400,000), Mitchell Marsh($290,000), Wayne Parnell($160,000), Jesse Ryder($150,000), Alfonso Thomas($100,000), Jerome Taylor($100,000)

Rajasthan Royals:- Shaun Tait($300,000), Pankaj Singh($95,000)

Royal Challengers Bangalore:- Abhimanyu Mithun($260,000), Charl Langveldt($140,000), Mohammad Kaif($130,000), Luke Pomersback($50,000), Johan van der Wath($50,000), Nuwan Pradeep($20,000), Rilee Rossouw($20,000), Jonathan Vandiar($20,000)

Isn't Christian plays for Southern Australia? and the image isn't him either, It's Klinger. This upgrade looks just similar with this one I don't know but If I google any one of those paras, it gives me different result.
