I wonder are you allowed to have them as I;ve tried for some time. Each time it says 'remote file too large'

You have a 60kb limit. Animations prior to the limit are allowed.

60 kb is plenty for a single-frame GIF, but most animations are over 100 kb. Use an image host such as imageshack or photobucket.

And if you do, it will show your gif as a static one because it won't let you break the avatar and sig rules for file sizes. Increase compression or cut frames.
