Has the Southern teams's bowling performances been that pathetic, that Amir who averages 35 makes the XI? :p

And good to know we have 3 Melbourne players in the mix again. Disappointing to see Pietersen miss out, but Sanga as a WKB rightly deserves the nod ahead. Cook is a legend though. ;)

Btw Dipak, its Alastair Cook - you've got it wrong in the squad list. :p

Only 12 bowlers have taken at least 10 wickets, and he's one of them.

The grade system really doesn't help, because obviously I'd have the likes of Malinga ahead of him.

Pretty sure I saw Dipak correcting someone else's spelling mistakes in the stories thread :p

we didn't really go into the game expecting to win it, with a weakened bowling attack but we ended up not doing so bad. hope the loss doesn't cause a chain reaction though.

Global Premier League Season Eight

Team Synopsis
by GPL review team

After the round-robin stage, we finally reach the playoff stages of the season. The completion of this season is just seven matches away where one team will take the trophy back home. The season, started with ten teams, but now after the group stages, only six teams remain.

Miami Thunderbolts just withered away after their good start. Cape Chokers never looked to be in contention due their over dependence of their bowlers and their bad performances. Essex lost the doe-or-die match in the last round whereas Los Angeles were just quite unlucky to miss out by the narrowest of NRR margins.

Now, the team synopsis of the six teams that stand a chance to win the trophy

-----------------------------------

tokyo-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Virender Sehwag - 513 runs @ 57.00 [50s: 5 | 100s: 1 | HS: 111]

Highest Wicket Taker: Graeme Swann - 16 wkts @ 22.20 [BB: 6/32 | ER: 4.3]

The have been the most consistent side of all. They won seven games and tied one game and are sitting at the top of the table. Their only loss was against bottom placed team Cape Chokers in the last round. Their batsmen and bolers have been quite consistent and they are the major contenders for the title. They have an unbeaten record at home so far, and that could be really important when they take on Antarctica Penguins at Tokyo

ap-1-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Kumar Sangakkara - 544 runs @ 57.00 [50s: 5 | 100s: 1 | HS: 104]

Highest Wicket Taker: Kyle Mills - 12 wkts @ 19.40 [BB: 5/20 | ER: 4.5]

Second to Tokyo Thunders in the points table, Antarctica Penguins have also been amazing throught the tournament. Their top order has been very consistent throughout, as we can see that no top order Antarctic batsmen (bar Hughes, who was dropped) averages below 45. Bowlers have also been good expect for Umar Gul, which could be forgiven given that he played a bulk of his games in good batting tracks. Middle order batting though, has beena worry

NewYorkYankees-1-1-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Sachin Tendulkar - 529 runs @ 58.80 [50s: 3 | 100s: 1 | HS: 124]

Highest Wicket Taker: Muttiah Muralitharan - 18 wkts @ 23.20 [BB: 5/45 | ER: 4.7]

New York stand third in the points table with 25 points. They had a bad start losing their opening two matches, but Duminy batted well in the third match to help them to a win, and there was no turning back from there. They won four of their remaiing six games and burst into the major QF. Dravid, Tendulkar, Morgan and Duminy have been good with the bat whereas Muralitharan has been amazing with the ball. Like Antarctica, inconsistency in the middle order has been a factor of worry.

Auckland-1-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Graeme Smith - 386 runs @ 42.90 [50s: 4 | 100s: 0 | HS: 70]

Highest Wicket Taker: Daniel Vettori - 20 wkts @ 22.20 [BB: 6/40 | ER: 4.9]

Auckland Avengers are lying on fourth place because of their not too bad NRR. Their batting and the entire team had been inconsistent in the beginning, but they found some rhythm as the tourney progressed. None of batsmen have stood out but they have been able to jot on some team performances. Anderson and Vettori have been great with the ball and with Onions coming back to form, their bowling attack looks more dangerous.

Magyars-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Jacques Kallis - 574 runs @ 63.80 [50s: 5 | 100s: 1 | HS: 120]

Highest Wicket Taker: Mohammad Aamer - 13 wkts @ 35.50 [BB: 3/48 | ER: 5.2]

The defending champions are in a really tight situation. They need to win five consecutive matches if they want to regain their 'Champions' title. They find themselves in such a spot partly due to inconsistently and partly due to poor bowling. It can be seen as their top wicket taker averages 35.5. Kallis and Cook have been truly magnificent. KP has been playing well when needed. The demotion of Amla has resulted in him getting a bit of form, but bowling remains a worry. Season 7 hero Morne Morkel has taken only 5 wickets and has a horrible average of 73.8

whate-1.png

Highest Run Scorer: Chris Gayle - 367 runs @ 40.80 [50s: 3 | 100s: 0 | HS: 89]

Highest Wicket Taker: Ryan ten Doeschate - 9 wkts @ 34.70 [BB: 3/31 | ER: 4.9]

Delhi had a wonderful start to the tourney, winning three of their first four matches. Then, they were plagued by a four game losing streak. Then the held their nerve in their crunch game against Auckland to reach the playoffs. They could say that they are lucky, as all the Round 9 matches went their way. Had Essex or LA won their respective fiztures, they would be on their flight back home. Trott, Gayle and RTD have been the stand-out performers whereas other have also chipped in with runs. Bowling has been pretty average, if not poor

-----------------------------------

That's all for the synopsis. Best of luck for the six teams that have qualified. Now we're off to Vancouver (Canada) where North XI & South XI lock horns in the deciding match of the Horizonal Shield. The winner is just seven games away. Who will win? God knows, till then good bye

That's exactly how true Champions play and that's certainly how Melbourne play. We have this amazing never-say-never attitude instilled in our blood and the results are mere rewards for all the hard work we put in. And what can I say off Alastair Cook, maybe equate to him the almighty? Probably more than that, given that his consistency has been so so magnificent. Amla yet again contributes down the order. Bowlers but for Amir and Morkel need to gear up their best sooner than later though.

Melbourne did well to get the cup , Cook played well for winning .....
