Howzat Beta Impressions

I tested the game today. It looks good so far. Of course, all the features haven't been implemented which gives me and others something to look forward to. Anyway this is what I thought about the game.

Batting - Batting was pretty easy but everyone was level 10 and it would be harder when not everyone is 10. It isn't as hard as the EA Sports cricket games to find the gaps. I got an top edge or a glove trying to cut the ball once and I got out, caught by short third man which adds more realism to the game. When I cover drived though, the collision system wasn't very good as I timed it way too early and I hit it through cover even though it was shown to have missed the ball. I can't seem to just do forward defence as well as it ends up being a straight drive and I hit it normally to mid on through the air. Other than that, it has been good for batting.

Bowling - You have to make sure you get the right line and length otherwise you could well go over square leg or mid wicket for 6. The swing and spin hasn't been implemented yet so that's something I will look forward to. There will probably be a few more edges against some of the lower order batsman once the skill levels for the batsman get put down. As soon as the swing and spin get implemented, it will be fine for bowling and hopefully more edges as well.

Fielding - Automatic. Fielders move towards the ball and get it in as quickly as possible. Haven't seem any dives yet as I always get caught when I hit it straight down the throat of the fielder. Some dropped catches are still needed and that will happen when the fielding ratings are introduced.

Overall - Looks good so far. Swing and spin to be introduced will make it a lot better and more realistic. I can't wait for the final release of the game.

Had the opportunity today to test the game against Radius Vector.. after a few minor technicalities we got the game underway.

Needless to say, I wasn't able to knock him over - we had some close matches though. The first ended in a tie, the second he won by 4 runs, and the last match I was looking great until the last 9 balls, when I scored about 3 runs needing 17.

Batting - I only hit one six whilst batting - although I tended to be a more defensive ground player, but I definitely like it. The timing is different when the ball is on your legs as compared to straight - I noticed I had to wait on the ball more when it was straight, but when you get a shot right it's nice to see it race for four. I found some shots a little difficult - like hitting square drives, but I guess that will come with practice. I think it would be better if it was possible for the batsman to move around whilst the ball was coming and not just set it after he sees it - it gives the batsman too much of an advantage if you are trying to set an off-side field. Overall, timing is the key. Easy to run in this game, a lot of 2s and 3s but perhaps not enough singles.

Bowling - You have to mix it up here - if you bowl one pace you will be discarded, as I found earlier, before RV helpfully pointed out to try and change it up. Changes of pace fool the batsman and they are definitely your biggest help. I liked to mix my bowling up a lot - a few yorkers, a few wide ones and a few bouncers - most of which was discarded - so it's definitely finding a good area. When I was batting, RV mostly bowled very tight and it restricted my opportunities.

Fielding - I'm unsure about the fields right now. An off-side field will normally capitulate unless you bowl every ball extremely wide - otherwise the batsmen can move across his crease after he sees where it is going to land, and then promptly smash it through the vacant leg side. The fielding is automatic - perhaps the throws come in a bit slow. I think their throwing speed should be a bit faster - it is allowing easy runs currently.

Graphics - The best you will find for an online game. The boundary rope picture looks poor but that doesn't really affect anything much - the rest of the animations are fine, and they are realistic enough for the purpose of the match. Some of the batting animations are a little off with the collisions, but it's not the worst in the world.

Overall - Great fun, a superb online game. Definitely can't wait until the final game comes out, but despite a few small things, it's looking great.

Final Verdict: 8.8/10

I have just tested the second beta. It is a lot better than the previous as it's a lot harder to bat. I played 2 games against Radius. First one, I bowled first and he made 58. Bowling was pretty hard against him but I still took like 3 wickets. I then replied with 31. The ball was very hard to time, especially driving and cutting. I was reluctant to slog and ended up short of the target, losing a fair few wickets. In the second game, he slogged me around and scored 91. I learnt that I had to time the stroke just before it reached me and I batted better, but I was still scared to slog. I normally leg glanced it and it would fly to the boundary if timed to perfection and it made you feel good. I scored 52 in the end, which was an improvement from last time but I lost 7 wickets this time, mostly run outs trying to scramble to get extra runs. Running is too easy, I say as you can normally get 2 or 3 if you hit it straight at a fielder in the deep. The rope is blurred but that doesn't matter too much and the collisions are still off a bit.

And after reading Blake's review, I now know how to change the pace, I thought it was just the amount of swing on the ball, haha.

Rating: 8.5/10.

is there a version where we can play the AI, not another person, if we wanted to.

September 2011. There you go, now you can be patient and wait for it like everyone else. They obviously don't want deadlines because they know people are more disappointed when they are not met than when there are none set at all.

That game contains a lot of data. This being a Browser game, should be able to fix problems much faster. This game will also be there for a while, and not a new version every year, so patches can come at any time, with whatever problems solved.

Yes, RV suggested there can be modes of graphics detail. I'm not sure about it, but there's a hint of it coming along with the final version.

Hopes alive.
