Ignorance

Please don't mind my ignorance, I am very new to the PC gaming and downloading patches.
Would anyone be kind enough to tell me specifically how to download patches.
For example, which files do I download the patches to.
Any kind of help would be appreciative, thanks.

Well when you download older AI patches they come with automatic installers which you just have to run. Newer ones come with files which must be manually applied to the gob file using Prakash's config editor 2. To install new stumps or pitch ads you need Prakash's graphics importer, and to edit save games you only need to download and run SavTweak. Everything is available from the downloads section.
