Lahore: Afghanistan cricket team coach Kabir Khan onSunday said that India despite being an influential cricket power in South Asia has done little to help Afghanistan move up the international ladder.

Kabir, a former Pakistan Test pacer who has now been working with the Afghanistan national team for last few years except for a short break, told PTI that the Indian Cricket Board could do a lot more for Afghan players.

"If you look at England they go out of their way to support the associate cricket nations in their region including Holland, Ireland and Scotland by allowing their players to play in their county and league cricket and helping them with coaching programmes," Khan said.

"In comparison in South Asia although they are four Test playing nations Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh we don't get that kind of support from them except Pakistan. India has the influence and money to do a lot for Afghanistan cricket if they want. But so far we are still waiting," Khan said.

He pointed out that the moment India starts providing proper support and encouragement to Afghanistan cricket, it would quickly move forward.

"There is a lot of passion for cricket in Afghanistan and they are good players but we suffer mainly because we don't have a domestic cricket structure. We don't get enough matches even in this region alone. Pakistan has supported us a lot but we still need support from the other cricket nations in this region particularly India," Khan added.

The Afghanistan team is in Pakistan to play a series of two ODIs and a T20 match from tomorrow at the Gaddafi Stadium here.

Khan said India needed to shed its psyche of looking at Afghanistan cricket as being similar to Pakistan cricket.

"We are two different cricket playing nations. Pakistan supports us a lot but until India and other countries also push us Afghanistan will be very slow in making progress as a cricket nation," he said.

Khan has brought a 22-member squad to Pakistan, including many young players with the sole aim of giving them exposure and making available to them the top facilities and coaching expertise available at the National Cricket Academy here.

The Test pacer said that Afghanistan was presently preparing for a tour to Scotland to play its ICC league series of a four-day match, two ODIs and a T20 match this year to help prepare for the 2014 T20 World Cup.

"Some of our players have now done really well and become proper professionals but they need more encouragement and we also need to find some young talent soon. Right now we are focusing a lot on improving our fitness and fielding skills. We want to play in the next 50 overs World Cup and make our presence felt there that is our target," he said.

Always felt that the BCCI should help Nepal and Afghanistan in whatever way possible, maybe let them play in our domestic competitions?

Pretty sure I made a point very like this the other day :p

India still hasn't invited Bangladesh for a tour, Afghanistan better wait in line.

Unless someone sticks a large wad of money in the pocket of whoever is in charge they won't help either.

Fair enough. The BCCI could invite Afghanistan to play in their domestic setup like they did with a few foreign teams in the Duleep Trophy.[This was a few years ago, dont remember exactly when]

Because the BCCI is the biggest, most powerful board in cricket, relatively near to Afghanistan in geographical cricketing terms. The fact that they are the richest board by a country mile. The fact that Afghanistan is a war-zone and if the players had a chance to improve their cricket within a structure like India, it could help them improve and provide a good base for people in Afghanistan to unite together via sport.

But yeah defend the poor mis-understood BCCI, Rohit :rolleyes

In fact why should anyone bother helping anyone in this world?

Exactly like England helps Ireland by taking away there best players.

If you think that is the same scenario you really need to get a better understanding of international cricket. The likes of Morgan decided to play England, primarily because they want to play test cricket. The fact that Ireland can't play test cricket is something to do with the ICC and nothing to do with the ECB in the slightest. If a player is registered to play for England and is available for selection why wouldn't he be picked?

Also teams like Ireland, Scotland and Holland have, or currently do all compete in domestic competitions within England and regularly have international games against England which is not only good for their players, it brings in much needed money. In contrast, the BCCI does nothing but monopolise international cricket and control the ICC, where if the powers that be planned ahead for longer then their next pay cheque they could see the huge benefits that could be brought to cricket as a sport by developing teams like Afghanistan.

Did anyone help India when they stepped into international cricket in 1932? How did the likes of Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, etc come into cricket? With whose help?

Just because the BCCI has lot of money, they are under the obligation to distribute it for all these purposes? Utter nonsense!!

Are you for real!!?? How can you put in the same context events in 1932 with events in 2013. God, their is only one word for the BCCI fan boys. DELUDED!

This statement by Afghan coach reminds me of school kids. If they really have potential, they would come up with the talent they have. They have numerous competitions like Intercontinental Cup and World Cricket League championships. And they have qualifiers for ICC Main events, where they do not need to compete the powerful teams, unlike in other sports. And people expect BCCI to entertain minnow countries by inviting them to play bilateral series'.

They could have done a different attempt here in order to seek help. A good letter requesting a tournament with India -A or Board Presidents XI would have been completely different. Its not like BCCI doesn't help. Players from minnows like Tendo are in IPL squads. If Afghan players are equally talented, then definitely some or the other IPL franchisee will entertain such players and give them something more than what they actually require.

We do help, but the approach what they're making is something what makes the difference.

*In case Afghan have already seeked help from BCCI, they need to have some patience. BCCI has lots of internal issues to solve before they actually offer a helping hand to others.

Indeed, that's a shocking statement (although based on past evidence i'm not sure if saisri is a bcci fan boy).

Surely it wouldn't be too much to ask to slip in Nepal and a couple of Afghan sides to the Ranji Trophy? You've already got 27 teams, where would the harm be in 30?

South Africa did the same for Namibia, and look how much it has helped them rebuild after that awful '03 World Cup

Talk about Nepal, yeah, they are the un-official 28th state of India, what with their folks coming over every now and then across the border in Gorakhpur.:p
