Well, I guess lyrics are the soul of any song while the music embellishes it.
So then, post any lyrics, or portions of lyrics, that you find beautiful or that which you find deeply moving. Any lyrics, but let them not be your own compositions. There's another thread for that. Try and put them in quotes using the quote option on the text editor.

Let me get the ball rolling then. Here are the three verses that make up Pink Floyd's 23 minute classic Echoes. Hauntingly beautiful.
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stares and
Something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

And now this is the day you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streamin in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide

2 of my favourite songs here. First one being Jimmy Eat World- 23. Hell of a tune.

I felt for sure last night
That once we said goodbye
No one else will know these lonely dreams
No one else will know that part of me
I'm still driving away
And I'm sorry every day
I won't always love these selfish things
I won't always live...
Not stopping...

It was my turn to decide
I knew this was our time
No one else will have me like you do
No one else will have me, only you

You'll sit alone forever
If you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here I'm now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end
The one thing that stays mine

Amazing still it seems
I'll be 23
I won't always love what I'll never have
I won't always live in my regrets

You'll sit alone forever
If you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here I'm now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end
The one thing that stays mine

You'll sit alone forever
If you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here I'm now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end
The one thing that stays mine...

The 2nd one being Letter to Hermione by David Bowie. Of course.

The hand that wrote this letter
Sweeps the pillow clean
So rest your head and
read a treasured dream
I care for no one else but you
I tear my soul to cease the pain
I think maybe you feel the same
What can we do?
I'm not quite sure what we're supposed to do
So I've been writing just for you

They say your life is going very well
They say you sparkle like a different girl
But something tells me that you hide
When all the world is warm and tired
You cry a little in the dark
Well so do I
I'm not quite sure
what you're supposed to say
But I can see it's not okay

He makes you laugh
He brings you out in style
He treats you well
And makes you up real fine
And when he's strong
He's strong for you
And when you kiss
It's something new
But did you ever call my name
Just by mistake?
I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do
So I'll just write some love to you

Both fantastic songs, both beautifully written and performed. Great lyrics as well.

One lyric which speaks to me immeasurably is,

"Dear gravity, You've held me down in this starless city."

Kinda talks about the last few years of my life really. Held down by things lesser than me, and I don't say it arrogently, as i tend to be. I say it from the experience they've given me, leaving me, hurting me. The only thing holding me in place was literally gravity.

Now, that line doesn't appear anymore but still means a hell of a lot when I hear it.

There's thousands of lyrics, one which I particularly like is,

"You've done this all before, you're a master at this art."

Along the same lines as dear gravity, both speak to me.

Two Oasis songs spring to mind:

Live Forever

Maybe I don't really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks it to the bone

Maybe I just want to fly
I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breath
Maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Maybe I don't really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks it to the bone

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever
We're gonna live forever
Gonna live forever
Live forever
Forever

Supersonic

I need to be myself
I can't be no one else
I'm feeling supersonic
Give me gin and tonic
You can have it all but how much do you want it?
You make me laugh
Give me your autograph
Can I ride with you in your B.M.W ?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine

You need to find out
'Cos no one's gonna tell you what I'm on about
You need to find a way for what you want to say
But before tomorrow

'Cos my friend said he'd take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall
No body can see him
No body can ever hear him call

You need to be yourself
You can't be no one else
I know a girl called Elsa
She's into Alka Seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train
She made me laugh
I got her autograph
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter
She's sniffin in her tissue
Sellin' the Big Issue

She needs to find out
'Cos no one's gonna tell you what I'm on about
She needs to find a way for what she wants to say
But before tomorrow

'Cos my friend said he'd take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall
No body can see him
No body can ever hear him call

Just love the lyrics from those two songs.

It's quite amazing when you come across lyrics that you listen to and feel that they are but a mirror to you. The following lines from another Pink Floyd classic 'Time' pretty much sums up my life so far. I'm trying to rectify it though.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
And shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more

Good old Tom Jones.

Enter Shikari-Adieu

And I long for you to appear
After losing your way across star riddled skies
To carry you home

And I long for you to appear
After losing your way across star riddled skies
To carry you home

I cherish my loss
A gentle reminder, that life is unkind
At the best of times

And I long for you to appear
After losing your way across star riddled skies
To carry you home

I cherish my loss
A gentle reminder, that life is unkind
At the best of times

(Brace yourself, cause I think I'm falling for you. Look up into the sky)

Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...
Home could be anywhere, when I am holding you...

Pink Floyd-Comfortably Numb

Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear youre feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I cant explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
Therell be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe its working. good.
Thatll keep you going for the show.
Come on its time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Joy Division-She's Lost Control

Confusion in her eyes that says it all.
She's lost control.
And she's clinging to the nearest passer by,
She's lost control.
And she gave away the secrets of her past,
And said I've lost control again,
And a voice that told her when and where to act,
She said I've lost control again.

And she turned to me and took me by the hand and said,
I've lost control again.
And how I'll never know just why or understand,
She said I've lost control again.
And she screamed out kicking on her side and said,
I've lost control again.
And seized up on the floor, I thought she'd die.
She said I've lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.

Well I had to 'phone her friend to state my case,
And say she's lost control again.
And she showed up all the errors and mistakes,
And said I've lost control again.
But she expressed herself in many different ways,
Until she lost control again.
And walked upon the edge of no escape,
And laughed I've lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.
She's lost control again.
She's lost control.

Joy Division-Love will Tear us Apart

Confusion in her eyes that says it all.
She's lost control.

A couple that spring to mind.

[Chorus: x2]
One behind the next in line
It's inspection time let me check your design
Your pedigree don't hold up next to mine
I'm a thouroughbred of the most excellent kind

[Verse 1:]
Brother Ali and who's asking
The text book definition of brute passion
The future, the past, a true champion is born
never made and that's a label you can't pretend
I think better outside of the box
I rhyme better outside of the booth
There's no hiding the truth, I'm the genuine positive proof
I buck shots through the roof set the hostages loose, shoo
One might got to give real a minute
But it will recognise A alike once the beat finish
Bleak grimacing winters led him to seek vengeance
With every bit the mistique of a street menace
Self appointed judge with power vested
to hand down sentances from bus stop benches
He's relentless with his it's just in his spirit
You don't want to read about it fool you want to feel it
**** happens but I'm calm in a **** storm
Its just normal, what you think I balled up a fist for?
They probably thought I was born yesterday right
Well mother ****er I stayed up all night
Hit me hard like huh

[Chorus x2]

[Verse 2:]
Oh the flow gon' cold cock you
You a born bitch local showboating imposter
I'm a known credited stone ghetto philosopher
I think very deeply, I aspire to be free
Read through these credentials of mine
I'm exquisite and only get better with time
And not yet in my prime
I age like wine and got a good goddamn head at the end of my spine
Plus I live outside of those confines
Meaning my expression is yet to be defined
Ya'll will never try putting ribbons in the sky
you would hit your head on that rooty-poot box you live inside
What you gon' do when the well runs dry
Human beings grown images just get old
So when we get old you gon' be out in the cold
and I'ma still keep chasing what I'm owed

[Chorus x2]

[Hook:]
Take a breath to check the Pedigree
Check the Pedigree
To check the Pedigree...

Pedigree by Brother Ali.

I know none of you bothered to read it, but whatever.

Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child, particularly the first bit. Just awesome.

Well, I stand up next to a mountain
And I chop it down with the edge of my hand

Well, I stand up next to a mountain
And I chop it down with the edge of my hand
Well, I pick up all the pieces and make an island
Might even raise a little sand

cause Im a voodoo child
Lord knows Im a voodoo child baby
I want to say one more last thing
I didnt mean to take up all your sweet time
Ill give it right back to ya one of these days

I said I didnt mean to take up all your sweet time
Ill give it right back one of these days

If I dont meet you no more in this world then uh
Ill meet ya on the next one
And dont be late
Dont be late

cause Im a voodoo child voodoo child
Lord knows Im a voodoo child

Im a voodoo child baby
I dont take no for an answer

With Slight Return :p. I was listening to that yesterday. Great song. I'm now listening to Electric Ladyland which has both versions of that song. Currently I'm 7 minutes through the 15 minute version (but I'm not listening to it right now)

Don't know how I've got this song, but Voodoo Child Blues. Jimi is so cool I'm sticking him in my famous cricketer story thing.

These two songs are my favourites (lyrically anyway) as I think they're quite beautifully written the first being

Elliott Smith- Pitseleh

I'll tell you why I don't want to know where you are
I got a joke I've been dying to tell you
The silent kid is looking down the barrel
To make the noise that I kept so quiet
I kept it from you, pitseleh

I'm not what's missing from your life now
I could never be the puzzle pieces
They say that god makes problems just to see what you can stand
Before you do as the devil pleases
And give up the thing you love

But no one deserves it

The first time I saw you, I knew it would never last
I'm not half what I wish I was
I'm so angry, I don't think it'll ever pass
And I was bad news for you, just because
I never meant to hurt you

And I think this one has pretty good lyrics aswell.

Elliott Smith - Between the Bars

Drink up, baby, stay up all night
The things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before that you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
