While the rest of England's batting lineup fell prey to the fearsome Caribbean bowling attack, Jack Hobbs (right) played one of the all-time great innings on sticky wickets. He was very unfortunate to fall just four runs short of a deserved century on a pitch where no other English batsman could cross 25.

Rather than droop their shoulders and give up, West Indies decided to throw the kitchen sink at the English batsmen. An awe-inspiring spell of 5 for 24 from Curtly Ambrose had reduced them to a shambolic 28/7 before Alan Knott came to the rescue with a well played 39 from No 7. England eventually scampered to victory with just 1 wicket remaining thanks to a gutsy effort from their last wicket pair of Sydney Barnes and James Anderson.

That batting performance really was aimless no answer to Barnes at all. Starting to wonder how many more chances I should give Headley too.
In spite of this can take heart from the fact that we were within touching distance of bowling them out and clinching it for ourselves but still annoyed that we couldn't finish the job.

Had Australia not been blessed with batting riches in the 1910s in the form of Victor Trumper, Clem Hill, Warren Bardsley and Charles Macartney to name a few, or had New Zealand gained Test status only 5 years sooner, Harry Kortlang might have been a Test player. His masterful 116 showed what a wonderful talent he was as he remained unbeaten against the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas and Rangana Herath to further ROTW's lead to 293. He was well supported by skipper Sathasivam who shelved his usual aggression to grind out 79 off 201 balls. Needless to say, a target of 294 is a monumental ask on this pitch.

With his team under immense pressure to set Ireland a resectable target, Zaheer Abbas provided a batting masterclass at the top scoring 122 off just 146 balls. Javed Miandad also managed to turn up with the bat at long last, scoring 79 off 172 balls in a support act. He managed to add some crucial runs alongside captain Imran Khan, who in turn passed the baton to Wasim Akram and helped set Ireland a target of 240 to give Pakistan a fighting chance. Meanwhile, Tim Murtagh recorded Ireland's first 5-wicket haul of the competition during his spell of 5 for 76 from 26 overs.

Player rarities

- Elite/Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
- Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
- Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
- Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.
- Bronze. Used for players that are a level below Silver. They are more likely to put in good performances than players from the Sapphire/Crystal category.
- Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

Explanation on pitch types

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer early on, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Batting expected to become easier as the match progresses.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.
Poor - Uneven bounce and a huge amount of turn on offer for spinners. Expect a slow hard grind where most batsmen rarely score at above 2 an over.
