ROTW posted a good first innings total of 337, but there was a feeling they could have gotten more had some of their batsmen followed Mike Denness' example and not thrown away their starts. Zimbabwe's spin quartet did rather well to keep them below 350, picking nine of the ten wickets to fall during the innings.

A return to wicket-keeping duty saw about a return to scoring hundreds for Andy Flower, who expertly negotiated ROTW's only spin threat in Rashid Khan. Not surprisingly, ROTW's pace dominant bowling attack struggled for penetration on a baked subcontinental surface where an extra spinner might have come in very handy. Zimbabwe mustered a first innings lead of 54 runs.

Zimbabwe appeared keen on going after their target, but for a timely intervention by a certain Mr J. M. Laing. The great Canadian bowled with impressive pace and hostility throughout the match despite not having figures to show for it on an unhelpful pitch for pace bowling, and forced Zimbabwe to go back on the defensive by claiming the wicket of the well set Alistair Campbell for 65. Heath Streak and Graeme Cremer decided to bat out a draw following the latter's dismissal. The absence of Bart King (ruled out due to injury) was genuinely felt by ROTW as their bowlers failed to dislodge the plucky 8th wicket pair of Streak and Cremer for more than 12 overs, whereas someone like King could have run through them in less than one over.

Patience rather than aggression was the order of the South African innings, with the exception of the uncle-nephew duo of Graeme Pollock and Shaun Pollock who scored their runs quite dominantly. The elder Pollock cashed in with a breathtaking 89 off 157 balls that left some of New Zealand's best bowlers without answers. South Africa finished with a healthy lead of 50 at the end of their first innings.

Graham Dowling finally broke a sequence of scores ranging between 20 and 49 to bring up his first century of the season, and incidentally his first ever LAB hundred as well. But New Zealand's second innings was nothing short of a disappointment considering how well they had competed in the first. Having learnt from their first innings mistakes, Ireland deployed a more solid approach at the top. It paid off quite nicely with all of Frederick Fane, Ed Joyce and Major Robert Poore recording half-centuries, thereby setting the perfect platform for the likes of Bob Lambert and Kevin O'Brien to come in afterwards and dominate a Bangladeshi bowling attack overly reliant on Shakib Al Hasan for breakthroughs. Shakib claimed 5 for 114 for the innings to finish with an impressive match haul of 9 for 172. Ireland had managed a sizeable lead of 401, making victory appear quite unlikely for Bangladesh.

Tamim Iqbal proved his quality with a thoroughly entertaining century. It did not prevent Bangladesh from going down by a heavy 162-run margin to give Ireland their first ever victory in LAB history. Nevertheless, both he and Shakib Al Hasan deserved praise for their efforts in a faltering lineup that slid to it's fourth defeat from as many matches.

England could not have asked for a better first innings effort, as they went on to post 462 whilst losing only 4 wickets over the course of 167.1 overs. Pakistan's talented pace quartet of Wasim Akram, Imran Khan, Waqar Younis and Sarfraz Nawaz were completely blunted by Wally Hammond and Ken Barrington, who scored 159 and 129 respectively. This was also Hammond's first LAB century since Season VII.

But England's jubilation at their first innings performance turned to gloom with their own weather turning against them. The best part of 2 days were lost to rain and it took them until early morning on the 5th day to finally end Pakistan's first innings at 194, with Hanif Mohammad remaining unbeaten on 100 off 271 balls. Pakistan, who were 268 runs in arrears had less than three sessions to battle out in order to escape with a draw.

The West Indians were given a tough time by Anil Kumble, who found a good deal of assistance from the slow Georgetown pitch to emerge with a five-fer. But no matter how well he bowled, he couldn't do much about Garry Sobers as the latter smashed his way to an unbeaten century on one of his favorite batting venues. His contributions with the tail saw West Indies post a pretty good first innings total of 400.

Whatever Kumble could do, Lance Gibbs could do better. The miserly off-break bowler conceded only 55 runs from his 30 overs whilst picking up 5 wickets - that of Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. One can't possibly ask for a better haul in a Test match in terms of the quality of wickets claimed. India, despite some fine knocks from Kohli, Gavaskar and Mankad were forced to concede a 88-run lead.

Explanation on pitch types
Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer early on, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Batting expected to become easier as the match progresses.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.
Poor - Uneven bounce and a huge amount of turn on offer for spinners. Expect a slow hard grind where most batsmen rarely score at above 2 an over.

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper. Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive. Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines. Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals. Green - A lot of movement on offer early on, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Batting expected to become easier as the match progresses. Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on. Poor - Uneven bounce and a huge amount of turn on offer for spinners. Expect a slow hard grind where most batsmen rarely score at above 2 an over.
