Lucknow Super Giants

On the topic of ICL those guys got their marketing perfect.

Frankly many aspects of the IPL were ripped off straight from the ICL. And poorly ripped too.

Post Lalit Modi, there has been no innovation. IPL has just became another routine cricket league.

Lol, everyone has forgotten that the template for IPL was almost entirely ripped from the ICL right down to the cheer girls, except the franchise ownership model. Quite frankly I was embarrassed by the IPL initially especially the CSK name and generally lack of imaginative franchise names. I consider ICL as the innovator and they were on the wrong side of history and quietly forgotten.

When you get innovation you get some of the silly crap the BBL comes up with or The Hundred. Although a lot of the innovations in the Blast/100 are actual sensible common sense changes. Hope the IPL implements the rule that has been implemented for T20is.

I have had some decent read about this one and actually speaking BCCI were planning the IPL well before the ICL began. It was someone from the BCCI itself who leaked the information. So when this thing came public everyone felt it was an innovation but it was a rip off of a prototype laid down by BCCI.

I don’t get this obsession with “super“ this or that. CSK itself is a rip off from Chennai Superstars (remember the ICL anyone? That rebel league of T20 cricket before T20 became big)
At least CSK justification seems logical
"The Chennai franchise named the team as Chennai Super Kings to honour the rulers of the Tamil empire. The word "super" is used commonly in southern India especially in Tamil Nadu. The team name also derives from India Cements' brand 'Coromandel King' "

Can you link me to any news source from 2007? I am genuinely curious on this point, because I am almost sure that the BCCI didn’t like the T20 format before India’s win in the 2007 World T20.

Seems like I need to refresh my knowledge about this one. Because everything I read about IPL was it was a brainchild of Lalit Modi and it was established on the lines of NBA.

I think we digressed from the topic. I request the mods to move the above posts to the IPL General discussion thread.
