Yesterday I had a net session for Martlesham CC, invited along by one of my mates, who described it as "real village cricket, we play for a laugh". I was pretty stoked to be invited because I have never played Club cricket.

The net started well, with my old maths teacher (from Year 6) going into bat first, I bowled solidly, picking up on his leg-stump weakness quickly, getting a fair few to fizz past the outside edge.

Next into bat was some chap I haven't ever seen before, and who looks likely to be the opener this season, so I heard. He was quite baseball-y, with a high pick-up, which got higher on release. This guy began to get very frustrated with himself, and I bowled him Leg, Off, Middle three balls running.

Craig (the inviter) was next into bat, and we joked about before he went in, me saying how I was gonna bowl him, hit him with the quicker-ball bouncer, and him saying he was gonna send me on a nice run to fetch the ball...

Unfortunately he was the victor, first ball he got underneath me and absolutely SMASHED me straight for what could only be described as a twelve. Craig is 23 and boy is he strong! I laughed it off, and by the time I trudged back to bowl again, about 10 minutes had passed, and I only had time to bowl another 5 at him. The last ball was creamed yet again. I swore at him and trudged off again. Give him his due, Craig built me up quite horrendously, saying "Ben's in next, and he hits it way harder than me!"... Couldn't believe it!

Then it was my turn to bat, the captain had finished cutting the strip, and now had someone on the roller going up and down. He bowled the first ball at me, and I duly dispatched him about 100metres across the field. I'm not going to lie, I felt a bit embarassed, but as it turned out, he was 'quietly impressed' with me. At this point I would like to say a large crowd gathered, this was pure coincedence, and not because of how I batted, but I could hear murmurs of approval from some of the blokes standing there after a particularly nice cover drive. There were some girls there too, but I can't pass comment, given I am with partner ;)

Finally, it was off to the Douglas Bader pub, where I was kindly bought a pint, and run through the fine system, where you are charged for drops, ducks etc.

I have a Twenty20 season opener next Sunday, that should be fun.

Then, as is the norm, I had an Indoor game Sunday night, against an average/poor team at 8pm. They had persuaded my Dad to play for them, so that was fun.

I was WK for 13 of the overs, it was a lot of fun, and bowling I had so many drops off my 2 overs it was ridiculous.

Then into bat where I lost 5 runs first ball, bowled by my banana-skin bowler, who has now bowled me 3 times in two games.

Well, the less said about the Twenty20 game the better... Got 3 off 5, whereupon I was caught on the boundary. Then went 2.0-0-2-22.

Better was the season-opener for school. I am in the 2nd XI this year, and we turned up to Fram (our opponents) full of non-hope, believing we were about to be trounced.

Having bought a bat grip (previously I was using a handle covered in electrical tape), I was pretty confident of getting a good bat and hitting (hopefully) a few runs. I'm a pretty powerful guy, so I also wanted to hit my first ever 6.

We lost wickets quite cheaply, the openers falling for 16 and 8 respectively, whilst Extras were our top scorers up to this point. Number 3, the captain, hit 18, and the Year 11 in our team made 1. So I went in at 56/4.

I passed the captain on his way back to the pavillion, and asked "Do I have permission to hit out?"
"No".

Me, being me, didn't hold back, and hit the leg-spinner (I'm a lefty so it was going Off-Leg) over deep-wide mid-wicket for four to finish off the over.

Many overs later, I was on 41, and their opener decided to drop a short one on me, I tried to pull, but mis-timed and it hit me on the side of the stomach. I saw our No. 2 get a slower ball next, who got out, and was determined not to fall the same way. I hit my first ever 6 :)

I scored 58 off 40, my highest ever score, and have maintained my school S/R of being over 100.00, something I have done for the last 3 years.

Maney2k9 added 1 Minutes and 49 Seconds later...

We posted 165-9, I was caught at cover, and in reply they mustered 67 all out.

It wasn't all good, I have impact damage on my kneecap, and have damaged the anterior ligament in my right knee, and had to sit out England training yesterday.

Another game 9 days ago for school, I was full of confidence after my last knock, and was promoted all of one spot to number 5!

A better start by the openers, and I came in at quite a solid score. However, I went 4, 2, 4, out, much to the dismay of the captain standing at the other end.

We lost the game by 1 wicket :mad and my bowling figures were terrible, went for about 35-40 in my 3 overs.

--------------------

Another club game, this time for Kesgrave CC in the 2-counties Division 7 vs 8 Ash Green. Having turned up 10 minutes late, we were put into bat on a pretty damp strip, and after 30 minutes we were 30-4. So in I strode, with the captain at the other end, where we put on a
(match-winning) knock of 137. I hit 7 4's and 4 maximums, whilst also being hit in the box.

Dismissed for 82, I rescued my average, which is back up to 50.00 now. We won the game 270 - 8 to 113ao.

All in all a good day :)

Nice score against Ash Green mate, sounds like you easily owned them. Now to just get that form from Club games to School games. ;)

:P my club average is 82.00, school 34.00.

Combine both because 50.00 sounds sweet.

Played two games this weekend, both for Kesgrave, for the Saturday and Sunday 1st XIs.

Saturday was OK, nothing too spectacular, hit 36, including another bludgeoning six, but managed to run out the captain in bizarre circumstanes:
The bowler ran in and I creamed it straight back about shoulder-high, he managed to drop the catch, but spill it onto the stumps, giving Steve no chance.
We posted 200-odd, they got like 121 or something, and we won convincingly.
I took a hell of a catch at mid-off, the guy skied it miles up, I ran back and took an over-the-shoulder number, which got me congratulations off of the Preston North End goalkeeping coach

Today's game was not particularly productive from a personal point of view, although I did a decent amount of umpiring out in the sun.
Our batsmen scored the following: 28, 127, 75n.o. and 205n.o. The 4th wicket put on a club-record 266, and demolished the bowlers.
We won by 309 runs in a 45-over game, and afterwards their captain said to us he hopes we go on to win the league. Happy days :D

Currently 186 runs @ 46.50, 2 catches, yet to bowl.

Had a crap day yesterday, got 1, before edging behind. Still yet to bowl, took another catch at mid-off though, their Australian opener who is "potentially very dangerous". So that was pleasing.
That was against Felixstowe Corinthians, and we are back to Felixstowe again today to play the Caribbeans who are "hilarious" in the field.

Another poor showing at the weekend with the bat, making only 4, and my distinct inability to get in to spinners was embarrassingly apparent. I faced a hat-trick ball for the second time this season, which I knocked down with ease. Then came the leggie. I missed the first one, knocked the next four down, and had a heave at the final ball which I managed to hit through mid-on whilst falling sideways. The bloke at the other end dotted out another maiden, and the first ball of this guy's next over was where the troubles started. I swung and missed, had a stumping appeal against me, and picked out mid-off with a lofted punch whereupon he took a catch without having to move.

I bowled in that game, we were defending 158, and their openers looked like batting through. The more aggressive of the two crashed 30 runs from the previous over, and Skip said to warm-up. So I didn't, as per usual, and got dicked first ball for the biggest six I have ever seen, straight over the sightscreen. I went up in his face, (never sledged before in my life) and said something along the lines you (idiot). Next ball he smashed down mid-wicket's throat and I have my second wicket of the season!

Current stats: Batting
Games 6 Innings 4 Not Out 0 Runs 123 High Score 82 Average 30.75 50's 1 100's 0 Ducks 0

Bowling
Overs 9.2 Maidens 0 Runs 62 Wickets 2 BBI 1/18 5WH 0 Economy 6.67 Strike Rate 27.9 Average 31

I have taken 5 catches, also.

You sledged a guy after getting despatched for a massive six? That's not the way it's supposed to work you know, you're supposed to sledge them after they play a false shot, not a good one :p Worked though I guess haha.

The majority of people I have told said that exact thing. I know if a spinner said it to me I would try to unleash one.

Inter-firm game tonight, scored 9 off 5, and then bowled 3-0-2-20, not a bad day at the office in fairness.

The final day of my 3-game stretch was tonight, and at the end of it I have hit 71 runs @ 71, and taken 6 wickets @ 16 or so.

First game was away at Forest, who are East London, and we were quickly reduced to 50-5 off 17, which brought me to the crease, whereupon I hit a one, making it 51-5. Guy at the other end was bowled, 51-6. Forest's tails were up.

When I ran the other guy out penultimate ball, we put on 114 plus extras, him making 62 and me 50*. I hit a 3 last ball, and we posted 170-7.

Unfortunately we lost in the last over, I took one wicket for 40-odd.

----------------

Another Inter-Firm tonight (Thursday), where I got 9*, with the ball I got 3-20, and a run-out. Good times.

Club game yesterday, at Stowmarket CC, and we bowled our 45 overs where they scored 133-7, with some of the most boring batting I have ever seen.

We had an easy run chase on, but our openers scored 0 and 7, and no. 4 scored 0 (his second this year.) Me and captain Steve put on our second ton-partnership of the year, and we saw us home with him finishing 75 no, and I was caught at long-on trying to hit a 6 for my 50.

Another club game, @ Dedham this week, batted at four, made a brisk 53 before I was caught off of a leading edge to cover.

Man did I struggle in the heat today. Poor 7, taking my total for this year to 368 runs @ 40.89 :)
