Mike Hussey retires

Big news - wonder who will be brought into the side for next series? Khawaja? Maxwell?

bit of an odd one, I really thought hussey would stay until he was pushed. having waited so long to get into the side I didn't think he'd ever be in the position that he'd want to call time on his international career before he had to.

he's just scored three hundreds this summer, admittedly he's always done much better home than away so perhaps was making a decision about his ability to last a whole other year but I still think this feels premature. dravid, chanderpaul and waugh all managed to keep on scoring past 37, funnily enough, cricketers I feel he shares more in common with than ponting, tendulkar and lara. no reason he couldn't have managed it, especially since he doesn't have 20 years of cricket beginning to take it's toll on him.

though maybe, perhaps unlike kallis, lara, tendulkar, dravid, ponting, laxman etc because he didn't spend his early life touring from country to country with only a short break in between, and maybe he found the experience a little more wearing than some of those guys did. I know if I started life as an international cricketer tomorrow I'd feel a bit shell shocked all of a sudden spending 6 months of the year in foreign countries.

anyway, he was always my favourite player from the australian team that dominated teams because he lacked the air of entitlement, he was proud of the hard work he did to get there and knew he deserved his place. and then when they began rebuilding my favourite player from that reign too, he wanted to take the reigns and become a senior player for the team, and for the most part did quite well.

he was a great guy, pretty sad to see him go.
Because they threw in Tendulkar and Ponting in against the new against the top bowlers. Off course they will struggle a bit giving the way they play. They do not have the patience of a guy like Kallis to sit back and wait till he is really set or the luxury of a Amla at the other end.... Australia do have Clarke but he needs a couple of sacrificial lambs first (Australian top order) before he gets in against a nice older ball.....

Loved his batting. He was consistent and always occupied the crease. Probably the only man who always brought Aussies out of the misery when all other batsman failed. Thanks for the memories Mr. Cricketer!

PS: Would love to see Cricket Life 1 gets released now. All those jokes of Hussey to retire before it gets released turned out to be true :p

Good decision by him to bow out in style but in my opinion England will retain the ashes now :(

Hussey could have easily played for two more years or probably more.. He came very late into international cricket, unlike others like Tendulkar who have played 23-25 years of international cricket. And with the kind of fitness Australians (and particularly Hussey) has, he could have easily touched 39-40 and played.

Anyways, great cricketer... He was one of the nice guys in the Australian team. And have had the chance to support him while he played for CSK. Good luck Hussey! Hope you continue playing for CSK for sometime.

Well Jimmy Anderson & England will be licking their lips since this decision already could mean england have won the Ashes already.

Unless young batting talents like Hughes, Khawaja, Ferguson, S Marsh really step in the coming months in the long format & shane watson sorts himself out - australia probably will be taking its most weakest batting line-up into a ashes series since 1986/87.:facepalm

This is hugeee blow to australia especially in tests. Huss could have easily played until 40 - but as he said if @ age 37 he isn't feeling the buzz the tours coming up, the mentally he probably is right to go.

In remembering him, i'd certainly pick him as my # 6 in the best australia team i've seen since i started watching cricket:

Hayden
Taylor
Ponting
M Waugh
S Waugh
Hussey
Gilchrist
Warne
Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

Also i reckon he became in odi's a greater finisher than Bevan because Hussey had a six-hitting game that Bevan lacked.

Shocker to me really, was still among the runs from my odd look @ the scorecard and what not. Nonetheless, one of my favorite batsmen to ever play the game, wish him well on whatever he's off to now, thanks for everything, Huss' the great.

I think he'll go down as a very good batsman who didn't have that problem of starting too early and therefore struggling with his technique that other players have. As much as he had to wait ages to get in the side, scoring bucketloads of runs in England and Australia for years first did him some good for me.

Seems really bizarre timing though. I mean, I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd retired from the shorter formats, because that makes sense. But retiring from Tests just puts Australia bang in trouble. I can only think that he wanted to go out on a high, rather than risk going out on losing a series, if he were to retire in a years time though for example.

Have I got it right though that Australia go to India, then the back to back Ashes in terms of Tests? That could ruin some ones career before it gets going.

No Allan Border?

He has had an excellent career. Was a wonderful ambassador for the game and as far as I remember, he never got involved in any kind of controversy.Mike Hussey was affable, loved throughout the world, though mabye not by the opposition captains.
Thus ends 2012 with a plethora of retirements, we could in fact call it the year of Great Retirements. Sad indeed for cricket.:(

Interestingly Cricinfo has an article which talks about a future Aussie leader. Seems like Cowan and Warner are in the race to don the vice-captain's mantle.
Talking of captains, just remembered a fact about Hussey- He is the only Aussie captain to have a 100% loss record.

So an Aussie lineup of
Cowan
Warner
Hughes
Watson
Clarke*
Khawaja
Wade
Johnson/Starc
Pattison/Hilfenhaus
Siddle/Bird
Lyon

Now there's a lineup I'd expect Finn and Anderson to tear to shreds in England. Warner's already been given the once over in ODI's by Finn, Cowan's inexperienced and has never been to England before. Watson's unable to score big in tests. Hughes has already had his technique worked over by English bowlers and I expect it to happen again. Clarke is the only one I really worry about as an Englishman but he can't be a one man batting lineup.
