Its a bright and sunny day here at Johannesburg, fantastic for cricket. We have a pretty huge crowd here today as well.
The Pitch is a very good pitch with something in it for both the batsman and the bowlers. Batting on this wicket first will be better as batting last on any wicket, especially on the last day, can be very tricky indeed.

Now we go to the middle for the all important toss with Robin Jackman

RJ: Ihave with me, the two captains along with the match referee. Graeme Smith has tossed the coin, and Stephen Fleming has called heads, and he has got it right.

RJ: So Stephen, what is it gonna be?

SF: We are going to have a bowl first.

RJ: Thats a surprise. You will have to bat last then.

SF: Yeah, but I think we can make use of the early morning dew which is maximum on the first day. We have several bowlers you can swing the ball, and hopefully we will get some early wickets. Also the pitch looks pretty strong, and I dont see it breaking up too much as the match progresses. So batting last shouldnt be a problem.

RJ: Ok Stephen, can we go through your team?

SF: Yeah, we are opening with Richardson and Papps. Then we have apart from myself, Astle, Styis, McMillan, Oram, McCullum, Vettori, Martin and Bond.

RJ: And is Shane Bond fully fit?

SF: Yeah he is fully fit and is ready to get back to action.

RJ: Ok best of luck mate.

SF: Thanks.

RJ: Now Graeme are you happy batting first then.

GS: Well the pitch seems to a good one, withot something in it for both the bowlers and the batsman. So really, the result of this match shouldnt depend on the pitch too much, and hence I guess the toss is not that important, in this case.

RJ: What about your team?

GS: Myself, Gibbs, Rudolph, Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Boucher, Hall, Shaun Pollock, and also Nel, Pretorius and Makhaya Ntini.

RJ: I see you havent included any specialist spinner.

GS: No, I dont see any assist on this wicket for spin, and we have got a strong pace bowling attack along with quite a few useful medium pacers.

RJ: Well wish you the best of luck, Graeme.

GS: Yes, thanks a lot, Robin.

RJ: So there we have, New Zealand have won the toss and have elected to field first. Back to you Mike.

MH: Thanks Robin. And we will be back with Live action from this test match when we return from this commercial break.

MH: Lets have a look at the teams as the players get ready for action.

South Africa:

Graeme Smith
Herschelle Gibbs
Jacques Rudolph
Jacques Kallis
Neil McKenzie
Mark Boucher
Andrew Hall
Shaun Pollock
Andre Nel
Dewald Pretorius
Makhaya Ntini

New Zealand:

Mark Richardson
Michael Papps
Stephen Fleming
Nathan Astle
Scott Styris
Craig McMillan
Jacob Oram
Brendon McCullum
Daniel Vettori
Chris Martin
Shane Bond

So its Shane Bond to start proceedings for the Kiwiz, and he is going to bowl to the Proteas captain, Graeme Smith.

South Africa 257 all out at 5:28 PM on Day 1

MH: So a rather disappointing performance by the Proteas, with only Mark Boucher scoring above 50 runs. Several players got starts but lost their wickets in the 20s and 30s. Now lets us go through the innings highlights.

At the end of the 1st days play, New Zealand are 8-1. South Africa scored 257 all out in their 1st Innings.

MH: So just 8 overs of the NZ 1st Innings before the close of day 1. New Zealand themselves have got off to a bad start, losing Michael Papps for a duck. Ntini and Pollock have kept it very tight in the middle. Now let us have a look at the New Zealand scorecard followed by the Proteas bowling.

The South African bowling. Pollock and Ntini have done a good job so far. They will want to carry on doing the same tomorrow. 257 is not the biggest 1st Innings score.

Good start by South Africa. Also I realise you have a lot of bowling options. Ntini, Pollock, Hall, Nel, Kallis and Pretorius. Obviously the gamble you have taken is not playing a spinner. But looking at the pitch I dont think that will affect that much (though spinners are very handy in cricket 2004).

Best of luck for the 2nd day, and good work so far!
